Title: CW's "ARROW"
Post by: Mastrmynd on October 11, 2012, 03:29:53 pm
So I watched the season premiere of Arrow and I really liked it.
I watched it on accident. I didn't even know it was about to come on.
The Family Feud went off and lo & behold, Arrow comes on. I thought it was a preview or something until I realized it was the show.
I'll be tuned in next week.  This is a good show to be tagged up with Supernatural.
Thanks to Arrow, which had the best premiere ratings sinces Vampire Diaries, Supernatural had its best ratings in 2 years.

I just watched it on the CW site. That ish was good as hell! I felt like I was watching a movie. It took me an hour and fifteen minutes to watch a forty minute program because I kept rewinding to absorb the nuances. Especially dug the blonde chicks in fishnets dancing at his welcome home party. It was a nice little nod to Black Canary whom I didn't realize would be a co-star. I'm all in.

Anyone else watch the second season premiere?

I thought it was pretty good. I think they've put a lot more money into the show. The production values looked much better. I'm looking forward to seeing where Season 2 goes.

I think Bronze Tiger is on next week.

Loved.  Continues to get better.

Though did Thea suddenly jump in age?  I didn't think she was old enough to be living on her own.  Thought she was more the 16 year turning 17 rather than 17 turning 18.

Only problem with this bronze tiger other than the lack of costumes,  is that with those claws,  he looks like a poor man's Wolverine.

Regarding Thea, I think she had just turned 18 last season. I might be wrong but I thought there had been some college talk on the show regarding her future at one point.

As for the Bronze Tiger episode I thought it was just okay. I wish Ben Turner had gotten more development. I enjoyed Alderman Blood more than anything, as well as the cliffhanger ending, and the interaction among Oliver, Diggle, and Felicity. Plus Felicity was rocking the heck out of dresses.

You can say that again!  I always thought she was cute but she really stepped it up this episode!

Felicity is still looking good in this new episode, though she always looks odd when she isn't wearing glasses. She's a woman that looks much better bespectacled.

As for the episode, they found a neat way out of the cliffhanger and the entire episode was an improvement over last week. They took a newer character I didn't care for in the comics, Dollmaker, and made him creepy and work within the Arrow framework. And the end, with the hint of a much bigger bad to come, was just great. As was the tie of Black Canary to that greater evil.

I know it doesn't get as much press being on the CW and not being connected to the Avengers movie, but I find myself enjoying Arrow much more than Agents of SHIELD each week.

I agree. I liked Arrow right out the gate. SHIELD is limping along. It is improving but it isn't as good as Arrow was at this stage in season one. And season two of Arrow has started off strong.

Why is TV GA (Smallville and Arrow) better than the comic versions?

Quick question to anyone that may know:

Is 'Arrow' a spin-off show from 'Smallville'?

No its not.

Its a different actor playing G.A.  in Smallville (Justin Hartley). Stephen Arnell plays Arrow on the show now.

The backstory is completely different except for the "learned archery while shipwrecked" origin.

Thanks!

Appreciate the reply.   It seems to me that some of these new comic book television shows have yet to match the high standards of 'Smallville'. :-\

I suggest that you check out the current Green Arrow run with Jeff Lemire, which starts around about issue #17. It's pretty good and has some really cool art. Also, maybe check out Green Arrow: The Long Bow Hunters by Mike Grell and Andy Diggle's Green Arrow: Year One. I think Grell and Diggle's work inspired the current TV show. And I enjoyed the books I read during Kevin Smith's run as well.

I co-sign on all over that.  I was a huge fan of Long Bow Hunters (and most of Grell's 80 issue run).  I gave the new-52 version of Green Arrow a chance but didn't care for it until Lemire started writing.  Now it is near the top of my pile every month.

I enjoyed the Longbow series, but for whatever reason, I never followed the regular series by Grell.   I assume I didn't care for it.

Glad to here the nu52 had a new writer because I didn't care for the first two TPB.

Definitely check out Lemire. I didn't care for the first two New 52 writers either. Lemire comes in and immediately makes an impact and a step in the right direction. I'm enjoying his take on Count Vertigo right now. It's better than what the Arrow show has done with him. I wouldn't mind if the TV guy got a Lemire makeover.

As for the last two episodes...."League of Assassins" was just a great episode. Lots of action, big revelations, and more mentions of Ra's Al Ghul. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. One of my favorites of the series period.

Last week's episode was Diggle-centric, so if you're big into Diggle, I recommend it. Amanda Waller also makes her first appearance. I thought Cynthia Addai-Robinson did okay, though her time was short. The writers finally found something for Summer Glau to do besides glower and it was a welcome transformation. I hope they continue the character down this road.

Another DC comics group also gets a mention.

Arrow's mid-season finale "The Climb" was the best episode of a so far lackluster season. The series might finally be back.

I'm no DC person but y'all just gonna have to hate.  There are other shows better than Arrow, but I must say, this is the best thing on TV atm...THAT I WATCH.  I don't do the Zombies for the motorcycle gangs.  This is some good sh!t though.

The cast is great. Stephen Amell, Emily Bett Rickards, David Ramsey - even Brandon Routh. Forget Superman...he's The Atom!

I've heard this criticism a lot, and as a person who is kinda ambivalent about the show, I'm wondering what is
so bad about this season compared to last?

Unless people are mad about Black Canary/Sara getting whacked.

The Season Premere and its aftermath were very well done, the Flash team up episode was lots of fun and the season finale is as good as this show ever gets.

My only problems with this show (now-the first season looked pretty bad to me) is that they aren't giving Arsenal anything to do and Brandon Routh isn't playing Ray Palmer/The Atom. He's playing Ted Kord/Blue Beetle.

Ray Palmer wasn't a billionaire industrialist. Ted Kord was.

People shouldn't be mad.  Sara isn't Black Canary in the books, its Dinah Laurel Lance, the lawyer that's training with Wildcat in the show.   8)

Ray Palmer wasn't a billionaire industrialist. Ted Kord was.

As an Arrow fan I think this season isn't as good because so far there hasn't been a compelling central villain (I wasn't impressed with Ra's first appearance though he makes a better impact in "The Climb", though I'm still not impressed with Matt Nable's take on the character. He lacks the gravitas. He's too scruffy.), I also think they drug out the mystery of Sara's murder far too long. It wasn't compelling. The way she died was intended to be shocking, but it just felt off. They bring her back at the end of an episode just to kill her off. I wish her death had been handled better. I also am not a fan of the Oliver-Felicity relationship and this season has focused more on that. I'm iffy on Ray Palmer. This season has had a lot of DC Easter Eggs, but it hasn't been delivering them as satisfyingly to me as Season 2. And season two did a better job building up to Slade.

Some of the ambivalence about Season 3 might revolve around Laurel becoming Black Canary. I know it happens in the comics and I think the actress is doing okay with the build up, however I think the build up is going to be rushed (from what I've read). And Sara made for such an awesome Canary. I think she has big shoes to fill and the show might be rushing Laurel into those boots too soon. One of my old criticisms with the show was that they brought Roy into it way too early. I would've saved him until Season 3 or 4. I guess I can't fault the show for trying to give fans what they might want or trying to be somewhat respectful to the comics.

I think Palmer was supposed to be Kord. Kord was referenced previously on Arrow. But I read the Arrow folks were told to not use Kord. So WB/DC must have some plans for him. The character works better as Kord IMO.

Of course the theory is that he will be Guardian,  Gangbuster or even Peacemaker.  And in comics all their costumes are weak to sucky.

David Ramsey...You ask the CW to make your character John Stewart , and instead you get...that.

I'm not sure if its badly made Orpheus, or badly made Vigilante or like you said.... badly made Peacemaker.
That's horror is almost as bad as Latino Wildcats costume.

That's another one that was just a bunch or crap thrown together.

I would have been shocked if they made him Green Lantern, especially since, as GL he'd couldn't remain on Team Arrow.  He'd be just too powerful.  They're all street level heroes.  Vixen is probably the most powerful you could be and still be on this show as a regular.  Now, if they planned to spin him off on his own series; then he could be GL.

But so far, none of the ideas out there, none impress me.  Guardian comes closest for me liking but I actually would rather they create an all-new character for him.

And I really hope, that this isn't the final costume.  This universe does tend to like costumes to be "works in progress."

BTW, first saw the helmet and thought, "Magneto."

Spoilers...

The Season 4 premiere was decent. It had some good and some bad. Unfortunately if you are not an Olicity fan the episode starts off with enough of that to get more than your fill. After last season Oliver has given up being the Arrow and he and Felicity are living in shacked up bliss in the suburbs, a place called Ivy Town, which I learned has ties to the DC universe, Ray Palmer in particular. Oliver is about to pop the big question before both he and Felicity are sucked back into the ongoings in the renamed Star City.

While Oliver has been in retirement Diggle, Black Canary (Laurel), and Thea (Speedy/Red Arrow-I think they call her Speedy, but insisted on being called Red Arrow, which is good for her since I think it sounds cooler) are in over their heads against a group called "The Ghosts". Diggle's helmet doesn't look as ridiculous in action as it does in pictures and thankfully there is a visor that covers his face, if not completely obscuring it. Canary and Red Arrow enlists Oliver's help, but Diggle is not pleased since he hasn't gotten over how Oliver treated his wife and child while supposed working for the League of Assassins last season. The episode is about getting the band back together, but also introducing the apparent big bad this season, Damien Darhk. Neal McDonough, a pretty good actor is playing him, and the episode shows he's a bad ass and a real threat for Oliver and the team. Still though, not quite sold on him.

I have mixed feelings about Darhk. In the larger scheme of things this guy Oliver should've taken on before Ra's Al Ghul. He is not in the caliber of Ra's in comic's history. That being said, I do think its sort of neat that the Arrow writers are taking an obscure character and giving him shine. Plus they pretty much can do what they want to with their version of Darhk without any push back from fans who 'know' the character like people feel they know Ra's (myself included). One thing this episode does is introduce magic in an explicit way into the Arrowverse (though I guess Oliver's unexplained resurrection and then the use of the Lazarus Pit last year was the first introduction of magic). I was reading another review and it pointed out that Arrow generally waits until mid-season to show their big bad so this is unusual to have him in the first episode. He even fights Oliver in the first episode and totally outclasses Oliver.

The reviewer also speculated that Darhk might in fact be working for someone, and if that turns out to be the case then it would be more in keeping with how Arrow normally does things, holding back the big bad. And if that is the case it leaves me wondering who could be giving this guy orders? Since Vandal Savage is showing up on Legends of Tomorrow, that's the only person I can think of that would boss Darhk around.

The flashbacks were cool this episode, with Oliver in Central City. There are some neat Green Lantern references as well. And Cynthia Addai-Robinson returns as Amanda Waller. I didn't think she was coming back due to the Suicide Squad film coming out next year so it was good to see her again.

The episode ends with a big twist and then a jump to the future where Oliver and Barry are standing over a grave. Of course they don't show whose name is on the head stone. The scene right before that makes you think it could be Felicity. However that could be a fake out. I'm guessing it's going to be Diggle. I see him as the most expendable.

This season Diggle will get to face off against HIVE, who had his brother murdered. Once that's done a lot of his purpose will be finished in the show. Also the death has to be one that impacts Oliver greatly. To be a bit cynical with the upcoming introduction of Curtis Holt, this show's version of Mr. Terrific, it could be a case, a la Walking Dead where they introduce one black character and kill off another. If Holt proves a fan favorite that might make the writers less hesitant to kill off Diggle.

Felicity is too obvious and I think the writers would be afraid to take on her fan base and all the Olicity shippers out there. Personally I think the writers have created a Felicity problem that's run rampant and to the detriment of the show. Nothing against the actress or the character, at least how she was in Season 1 and most of Season 2, but the relationship is a drag and pushes Oliver further away from Black Canary.

I don't think Thea will die because they teased that last year and she was resurrected in the Lazarus Pit and will be dealing with the fall out from that in Season 4.

Laurel, I don't think they will kill since they offed Sara last season.

Captain Lance, another possibility, but I don't think Oliver would be that distraught over his death. Lance has been on Oliver's ass since Season 1 and in Season 4 doesn't appear to be letting up.

If this happens, they might as well get official and say Cavill is done. And while I like Hoechlin a lot as Superman. He's second to Christopher Reeve IMO (didn't watch Lois & Clark enough so I can't really judge Dean Cain), I'm not a big fan of how he's been handled in the Arrowverse so far. I could see them having him take a backseat to Lois on this show, like he does to Supergirl (I get it with Supergirl, because he's a supporting character on her show, but I'm not going to be cool with that in his own show). I know they'll have to do the obligatory future is female stuff and Superman will be made a posterboy for the new anti-toxic masculinity.
