Post by: JRCarter on April 10, 2017, 05:12:33 pm
Here are the choices:

James Evans (Good Times)
Heathcliff Huxtable (The Cosby Show)
Philip Banks (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air)
Carl Winslow (Family Matters)

John Amos would be my pick, he entertained me the most from that list.  Sanford would be my write in.    :)

James Evans!  He took no guff!  Too bad that the producers/network people didn't have the vision to keep him on.  Show wasn't the same after he left.

I was disappointed in the last 3 seasons of Fresh Prince, in that uncle Phil seemed to be more relegated to being the butt of jokes, especially fat jokes; you scarcely saw him in a more serious vein after Janet Hubert-Whitten left.  On a side note, Aunt Viv seemed similarly under-developed during Daphne Maxwell-Reid's tenure.

Cliff seemed less forgiving of Theo than the girls, for whatever reason, lol.. I don't know if that was his version of "it's going to be tougher on you as a black man out there" routine, or what..

I paid the least attention to Family Matters during its run.  My general takeaway is that as Urkel became the fan-favorite character, and writers began writing Urkel-centric episodes, the parents began to matter less.  Reginald VelJohnson was certainly a great sport for enduring all the slapstick antics.  Apparently JoMarie Payton quit before the last season.

James Evans was the one I loved the most.

Cosby was amazing, of course.

My kids say I"m the most like Dre from blackish.

During the final seasons, they brought Ray J on as Dorian, Frank's wayward nephew. Then, they revealed that he was actually Frank's son via an extramarital affair.

Yes sir, the show was called "Sanford & Son"... and Son! IMO Fred Sanford was the best sitcom dad. I never watched Family Matters. No! James Evans... "Damn, damn, damn" another broken family.

Even though he loved his son, you do know that he verbally abused him every day of his life, right? Like, everyday. lol
He even made Lamont drop out of school earyl (10th or 11th grade) in order for him to help build the "Sanford EMPIRE."
lol

They live in a co-dependent and abusive relationship.  I'm surprised that Lamont was able to marry Janet and leave home.

"You Big Dummy!" LOL! that ish was funny...
most of the tv dads (from that era) were verbally abusive. uncle phil had the sharpest sarcasm! james was intense with his. I never watched Carl Winslow (Family Matters). no. that show was a big novelty! "did I do that?"
