Title: ALIEN franchise
Post by: Emperorjones on December 27, 2017, 08:54:44 am
I saw something about Alien: Covenant on the board, and I thought there had been a thread about Alien: Covenant. But I guess not. Anyways, here is some new potential developments.

I never got around to sharing my thoughts on Alien: Covenant it seems. I thought Covenant was better than Prometheus in terms of story and characters. AC felt more like real prequel to Alien than Prometheus did. ACís characters were relatively more intelligent than the ones in Prometheus, which is odd because ACís characters were mostly colonists seeking to establish a new colony while Prometheus was filled with some of the Ďbest of the bestí scientific minds.

AC also delivered more on the horror, with the pretty cool Neomorphs, which are a nice addition to the creature lineup. Also, thereís the cool ďPlanet 4 XenomorphĒ who gets quite a bit of action due to CGI.

While ACís characters were generally better realized than Prometheus, there was still issues with underdevelopment and the stupid decision making that often afflicts horror films. The film touted the female character Daniels as the lead, and while that is technically true, Michael Fassbender (playing two androids) was more central to the story.

I thought AC was a decent entry in the Alien franchise, but Ridley Scott still has problems putting his new ideas about creation and mankind into a cohesive story. AC just muddled the mythology he was building for Prometheus even more. In fact, it chucks a good deal of it away and replaces it with something that is radical to the franchise but didnít make much sense to me.

Both Prometheus and AC are great looking films. I think Prometheus actually looks better and has a larger scope, but AC has a better story (one reminiscent of an early Star Trek: TNG episode), and has the feel of Alien more than Prometheus did.

I almost wish that Scott hadnít tied his Prometheus ideas to Alien (at least at first). Just let him tell this story without the pressure and expectation of it being part of the Alien story, and then in the third film just drop a big twist or reveal on us that it was leading up to Alien. If he had just been allowed to tell his story of the Engineers and loosely tie it to Alien it might have been better. The attempts to fit what he wants to do now with what he did 40 years ago havenít really worked so far.

As for Scott wanting Alien to be as big as Trek or Star Wars, thatís not even going to happen. He should be happy that Alien is as big as it is. When I thought about it, the last two unqualified successes in the franchise were the first two films, over 30 years ago, and yet people have kept coming back to support the franchiseís offerings. I canít think of any major franchise thatís had as poor a track record but as committed a fan base. And while AC had disappointing box office there were still plans-until recent reports-that the studio was going to do a AC sequel.

The nature of the horror genre makes it hard to expand this film without diluting the brand. Itís R-rated horror. You canít sell a lot of toys to kids, you arenít making kid friendly cartoons, most of the humans are killed off each movie, so thatís another thing you canít build on, a welcome return to characters from movie to movie. And in nearly 40 years Sigourney Weaverís Ripley has remained the face of the franchise. There have been some interesting characters, but often they were killed off (like Hicks and Newt) or were just in one film (Call, Johner, and arguably Prometheusís Shaw). Arguably David is second to Ripley as the main character of the prequel films but the mixed reactions to both Prometheus and AC show heís nowhere near as popular a character.

Itís pretty impressive that theyíve had video games, novels, comics like they have, and perhaps Scott should just count it as a victory and move on.

I read the novel Original Sin that called the Space Jockey a member of the Mala'kak in what was supposed to be a then canon novel. Prometheus overrode it unfortunately. I liked the name Mala'kak. Though simply calling Engineers isn't bad either.

Sucks that this concept art wasn't used in the film. I'm digging a lot of it.

Last year I revealed a possible live-action series set in the Alien universe in the very early development stages and could be heading towards a streaming service.

Well, itís been a couple of months and I have some exclusive updates to share.

There isnít just one live-action Alien series in the works, but two of them.(https://i.imgur.com/11Qgc6y.gif)

According to a source, one of them is said to have Ridley Scott as an executive producer and is going to be for Hulu.

I would imagine that his production company Scott Free Productions would be involved as theyíve had previous interests in television projects including Ridleyís current project, an android series titled Raised By Wolves for TNT (which is not Alien related and itís another thing entirely) that is filming in Cape Town, South Africa.

Details are scarce at the moment but there might be multiple seasons that could tackle different corners/eras of the franchise, not unlike Noah Hawleyís series Fargo.

In theory, I could see them possibly filling gaps in the franchise or crafting brand new stories to tell within the Alien universe.

It still seems to be the very early days with these projects and I canít exactly speak to what theyíll be about at the moment.

The Disney-Fox merger is a couple of months away but that wouldnít stop from Fox developing their own in-house projects.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has also suggested in an earnings call recently that theyíre open to Fox continuing mature programming/franchises and weíve already seen Marvel Television launch four mature animated shows on Hulu with M.O.D.O.K., Hit-Monkey, Tigra & Dazzler, and Howard The Duck.

There is a very good chance that we could see more mature projects from the Fox side of things take root at Hulu, like this Alien series from Ridley Scott.

After the less than successful box office run of Alien: Covenant it could be enough reason to pivot to television/streaming for the next little while.

When we have more information to share we will certainly update.

I watched the IGN Alien: Isolation webseries. I was disappointed. From what I could tell there wasn't much change from the cut scenes of the video game I watched years ago, though I read some new scenes were added to make it flow better, and I also heard on a You Tube review that the ending was changed. And the video game visuals don't hold up, especially for a webseries. I was more charitable when it was just cut scenes for a video game. The webseries looked and felt cheap to me, and I think it might piss off old fans instead of pleasing them, and also that I don't see how it does much to get new fans. The webseries format (several 10-13 minute episodes) made it harder to follow the story as well. The bright spots for me were the premise, the use of Amanda Ripley, some of the production designs, and the voice acting.

When I look at animated offerings from Star Wars, Marvel, and DC, or even the last Starship Troopers film, Traitor of Mars, there's just no excuse to put out an animated work of such poor quality. I've seen a Dead Space animated film, and I know Halo has animated offerings, and I think Mass Effect does as well, so there's just no excuse for Fox or IGN to have greenlighted this webseries and not made it better.

I watched Alien: Containment, the first of six short films to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the original Alien this year.

I thought it was a decent short film (under ten minutes) that got the tone and feel of the original film. They did a lot with a little and I liked how they used the xenomorph, and contended with whatever budget constraints they were under. But overall, the production values looked fine.

For what I consider a fan film the acting was pretty good for that. The characters and the scene setting could've had a bit more fleshing out. I also had to look at it again to understand the main action sequence which wasn't clear to me at first.

But overall, I thought it was better than IGN's Alien: Isolation.

I checked out Alien: Specimen. I liked Containment more...

'Alien: Containment' was a nice effort in the right direction but not as good as Scott's scenes in 'Alien'.

So far, these shorts really do reveal how brilliant the original 'Alien' and 'Prometheus' were.   The actors in the original can naturally emote to advance the plot.

Although clunky by today's standards, scenes in 'Alien' can make accidents look very convincing.

In 'Prometheus', accidents appear even more amazing than the original.

'Alien: Containment' tries to make an accident look convincing but I believe the director needed more takes to make it not look too staged or storyboarded.

Anyway, I haven't seen Alien: Specimen yet.  Gonna check it out right after I type this.

EDIT:   Just saw 'Specimen'.    Much, much, much, better than 'Containment' particularly how sound and how the visual effects are handled but not as good as Ridley Scott.

Including a pet in this short was also a clever reprisal from the original.

"Night Shift" is the weakest entry so far. The best parts for me were the opening scene,
Spoiler (click to reveal)
the general store setting, and the lead actress mainly because I thought she was cute.
Didn't care for the black guy in it at all because he felt stereotypical. Perhaps they were aiming for a Parker vibe for the black guy in this, but it didn't work.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
And I didn't like that he was at odds with the lead character, because black people just have to be at odds right and the black male has to be a jerk to black women. Also, the ending didn't really work either for me. I wish perhaps they had done more with the alien's acid blood here. Being hit by that could be more horrific than hearing that the colony was being invaded. I also was iffy on the FX here. At times I felt the alien needed to be slicker, glistening, mainly when it bursts out.

"Night Shift" is the weakest entry so far.

The sound was recorded too low.  Not certain if that was intentional.

'Alien: Nightshift'  was very good.  The editing was a little rough around the edges but I enjoyed it.  :)

Yes, the female sista lead was attractive. Reminds me of Zoe Saldana or Naomie Harris.(https://i.imgur.com/aytcyGf.gif)(https://i.imgur.com/PUTKPfR.gif)

About the original cast of Alien: Parker may have been an asshole to Ripley but he still respected her. Even saved her life from threats on a few occasions onboard the Nostromo.  Reading some of the feedback in the comments section tells me that folks aren't getting what's entertaining about the whole Alien series:  the cast of characters and how they get killed off one by one, as it is usually the jerks & assholes of the group who get taken out first.
I'm reading criticism that 'Nightshift' wasn't "...scary enough..."(https://i.imgur.com/hTxQ1yB.gif)

Doesn't have to be.

An Alien story can be suspenseful.  It can be frightening. It can be chaotic. It can be mysterious.
An Alien story can be a lot of things and if the storytellers can provide a jumpscare or two, that's great but that's not really what the whole series is about.

At its core, Alien is a modern sci-fi retelling of another Hollywood classic, 'And Then There Were None' based on the novel by Agatha Christie.

A story that can be retold again & again with a modern cast of roles and characters.

'Alien: Nightshift' works.  Let's see if the next filmmaker can follow up with more ideas on the next one. (https://i.imgur.com/0ReXA0j.gif)

I wished that Hanks (the android) had been less emotional, especially in the scenes where she's watching the crew in danger, and by herself. I wish she had been speaking with concern but her expression was cold.

Interesting.

Wanna know what gave away her identity, if indeed, she's an android...?

Look at the way she's standing every time the little doggie barks at the monitor.  Both hands restricted to the sides of her torso seems robotic & unnatural to me.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
ut there wasn't much of a story there for me. I do think they did a good job hiding that the blond was an android.
The short got really good at the end, but up to that, it was just a bunch of action without much to make me care about these characters. "Alone" on the other hand, did a better job when it came to character work.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Sometimes I felt Hope felt too human or emotional, but that made me think of Prometheus/Covenant's David and I couldn't fault that too much. Bishop and Call might have been similar, but I haven't watched their films in a long time. I thought the story for "Alone" was interesting and it presented a different way to look at the xenomorphs.

How I rank the shorts:
"Ore"
"Alone"
"Harvest" (Better production values but not as strong character work as "Containment" or "Specimen").
"Containment"
"Specimen"
"Night Shift"

The only one I was disappointed in was "Night Shift" but even that one had some positives. Overall I liked the short films and hope that Alien does more of them.

Knew the dude hogging the motion tracker was gonna be the first to get GOT. I just knew it!  ;D

'Alone' reminds me so much of 'Prometheus', where in the first act, David the android is all alone tending the ship while the crew members are in chrono-sleep stasis with the exception that this scenario is the polar opposite; the crew evacuated.

There's one shot that gave me a little smirk.

Where the android is holding up a centerfold magazine & staring at it with curiosity.  ;D

How 'bout a round of applause to all of the episodes in the 40th Anniversary Alien series! (https://i.imgur.com/ujPcTEH.gif) I really enjoyed them all equally.

I just can't wait to see Alien: Covenant everyone complains so much about.  I know I'm gonna like it! (https://i.imgur.com/NXtHORk.gif)

I definitely recommend checking out Covenant if you haven't seen it. One of the Alien fans on You Tube I watched review these shorts, Mr. H Reviews, said that Fox allowed either "Harvest" or "Alone" to use the Alien suit from Covenant. I'm guessing it was "Harvest" since we saw more of the adult xenomorph in that one.

Plus, Covenant has Jussie Smollett, along with a pretty decent cast. The Alien films generally have good casts in general though.
