I do watch her. I do find some of her segments on the movie industry and box office informative. Sometimes she is obtuse and clueless about some things, especially when it comes to race. She is the kind of 'innocent' white person who says some very suspect things without seemingly understanding how problematic what she just said was.

hmm.. I hope for a trailer this summer?

Since this film is in "the 1990s" I wonder will they reference a fictional president or Clinton? (presuming this is post-92)

impressive.  Still no glimpse of Maria Rambeau, I guess we'll have to wait until the film to see.  Hopefully she'll be part of the press tour.

Wow.  They really took it back.  I guess retro-web design is a skill set now?  I wonder if you can take classes on it.  Hmm.

I'm wondering something, I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere yet, does Jim Rhodes know Carol?  Seems like they would have technically been in the Air Force at the same time, though there's no guarantee they'd have met.

I dig it! :)    Vintage.

Looks like a website straight out of the Hollywood motion picture, 'The Net'.

Anyone else noticed Stan Lee's appearance at the end page.

Samuel L. Jackson Shares Photos From 'Captain Marvel' Press Tour
By JENNA ANDERSON - February 13, 2019

0
It looks like the promotional tour for Captain Marvel has officially begun.

Samuel L. Jackson, who will reprise his role as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, recently shared a series of photos from the movie's first Singapore press tour stop on his Instagram account. The photos showcase the crowd that was at the event, a selfie of Jackson, Brie Larson, and Gemma Chan, and a Nick Fury action figure.

Captain Marvel will follow Larson's Carol Danvers, a former Air Force pilot who comes to terms with her human and alien heritage while in the middle of an intergalactic war in the 1990s. In the process, Carol will cross paths with a young Nick Fury -- a version of the character that Jackson was excited to add to the film.

"I have a daughter and I have a wife who feels undervalued," Jackson told reporters during a visit to the film's set. "Because she is a black woman, she is in the business and she's been in this business longer than I have. She was a professional actor when she was a kid and doing all this stuff. And she's a specific body type and a specific...skin tone. Which is not the preferred skin tone of this business basically. I mean, Viola Davis is the biggest dark skinned star. And… being able to uplift women in a very specific way, I grew up in a house full of women. Who always made me feel special. And made me tow a specific line. I understand a lot about who they are and what they felt just because I heard it. And I had to experience it every day. How hard the world is for women specifically."

"And to work with Brie who has a very political aware sense of self, who not afraid to use her platform to push female agendas has been a real joy," he said. "This is my third movie with her. I did Kong with her, so we went all over the world. And then I did her movie, Unicorn Store. And to be a part of this specific story where she has such an enormous responsibility, especially in the success of the Marvel Universe and what it means every time there's a Marvel film. And to look at what happened last year with Wonder Woman, DC almost figured it out with that movie. To know what's going to happen when this movie does actually hit theaters for women and little girls is going to be amazing."

Right-wing trolls attack Brie Larson and target Captain Marvel with negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes
4chan users called for a boycott of the film after Larson spoke out about the importance of representation
by Alex Kaplan

Weeks before its release, the superhero movie Captain Marvel has already been targeted with negative reviews on the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes after users on 4chan called for a boycott and attacks on the woman-fronted and -directed film.

On February 12, Entertainment Tonight posted an article in which actor Brie Larson, who portrays the film’s superhero, said:

“I had a meeting with Marvel and what we discussed is they wanted to make a big feminist movie.”

The next day, The Hollywood Reporter posted a profile of Larson in which she discussed the movie’s significance for women -- in addition to it being the first Marvel movie led by a woman, it is also the first to be directed by a woman.

Larson also said in an interview published on February 11 that the movie critic community “appeared to be overwhelmingly white male” and that she wanted the film’s press tour to be “more inclusive” for film critics of color and women.

Some in far-right circles have responded by lashing out online at Larson, calling her an “idiot” and saying that a “big feminist movie” “sounds awful.”

Right-wing writer Courtney Kirchoff wrote articles calling Larson a “rude, sexist, racist bigot” and an “insufferable sexist bitch” on the website of BlazeTV host Steven Crowder, who is part of YouTube’s far-right community and who has hosted conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on his show and vice versa.

On Reddit’s “r/MensRights” subreddit, a user promoted a YouTube video calling Larson an “NPC superhero”

-- a reference to a meme about people who supposedly parrot left-wing views without thinking for themselves.

Users on on 4chan’s “/pol/” message board have been particularly angry, calling the movie “Captain SJW”
-- short for “social justice warrior,” a far-right term criticizing those who support liberal causes such as feminism, racial justice, and LGBTQ rights.

They also wrote that her “career needs to be destroyed for what she said about white men” and called for the movie to be boycotted.

Some users also specifically urged others to “tank” the film’s ratings and “downvote” it on review sites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb, along with pushing users to start Twitter campaigns like #BoycottBrie and #BoycottMsMarvel

On February 18, another 4chan message board, "/tv/," had a thread in which a user asked, "#BoycottCaptainMarvel raids when?"

Thousands of reviewers flocked to Rotten Tomatoes to tank the film’s pre-rating, which measures what percentage of people want to see it.

The film's score dropped from 90 percent on February 11 to 59 percent as of the publication of this article.

On February 19, some 4chan posters suggested message board users had played a role

This would not be the first time far-right trolls tried to impact reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

In 2017, some on the far-right took credit for tanking the rating for Star Wars: The Last Jedi because they were angry about the film’s “feminist agenda.”

I saw it twice, once yesterday, and then earlier today. I thought the film was good, but not great. It's average. I'm very curious to see how it's box office will ultimately end up, because I can't see it reaching a billion. I would be surprised if it overtakes Wonder Woman's box office total. It should do in the upper 700 millions IMO.

What I liked:
-Chemistry between Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson. The trailer gave off a kind of buddy cop vibe for the film, and I felt that a lot would ride on how well Fury and Captain Marvel worked together. And I think the chemistry between the two actors was there and helped the film out big time. Jackson was having fun playing a younger Fury (perhaps too much fun) and I think Larson enjoyed her scenes with him. I also think Larson had chemistry with Lashana Lynch and Jude Law.
-The story. I liked how they structured the origin story for Captain Marvel, making it fresher.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
I also liked the twists in the story, going some places I wasn't expecting. Though what this portends for all the Secret Invasion theories I have no clue. I was sort of hoping we would get an adaptation of Secret Invasion, but now I'm not so sure.
-The production values and designs remain top-notch. I thought the Skrull shape-shifting was cool,
Spoiler (click to reveal)
though I didn't buy that they could shift out in the open like they did not too many people were troubled by that.
-The action. While sometimes hard to follow due to where/how they shot the action, there was still some nice action scenes in the film.
-The setting. You can't beat setting a film in the 1980s or 1990s IMO.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
(Though I don't think they made the most of the time period. There could've been a few more jokes based on that, and I also thought the soundtrack could've been better. Though they did throw in some Salt-N-Pepa and TLC in there).

What I didn't like:
-Brie Larson's performance.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
I wasn't sold on her to begin with, and though her Carol Danvers's does have more personality than in the trailers, it felt misapplied at times. I thought they made her quippy right off the bat and it felt like she belonged in a different film. And throughout the film, she came across way too casual to be an alien soldier stranded on Earth, a being unfamiliar with Earth and its customs. Here, I think the MCU formula to put jokes and 'coolness' at the forefront hampered the film and also Larson's performance. When I was watching it the second time I thought she would've made a better Sharon Carter than Captain Marvel.
-Nick Fury.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
I liked that Jackson liked playing a younger Fury. But I didn't care for some of the jokes at his expense, and I also didn't care for how he lost his eye. It felt a bit anticlimactic, but done for another laugh.
-The tone.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
I thought the film was too jokey way too much, and too many people had to be in on the fun, including the Skrull leader.
-The de-aging wasn't as good as some tout. I think both Ant-Man films do it better.
-I was leery of the feminist label for this film going in, and while the feminism is there,
Spoiler (click to reveal)
and sometimes I felt that Danvers treated Fury too high-handed
, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.

I'd give it a B+!

I enjoyed it, and I'm glad I didn't know about any super-spoilers before seeing it.

The initial battle was handled very well, I liked the setup of StarForce, and I hope that some of them get to be seen again someday.

It sucks that there is such a glaringly obvious trashing campaign going on, this has become an "epidemic" (and of course last year it was Black Panther), good lord.

The flashbacks during Carole's initial capture were, for me, possibly the most "confusing" but I didn't particularly have trouble keeping up after that.

I would have wanted more hang-out time and general exploration time for Carole and Nick.  Maybe expand the plot's time-frame to her being on Earth several weeks as opposed to a few days (seemingly?)  I know this had to be roughly 2 hours, though.  I had thought that maybe exposing her to her and Maria's karaoke song would help jar her memory, lol.  I had thought they might end up at a blues bar in Louisiana at one point.

Annette Benning is Mar-Vell?  Ah.  Didn't see that coming.  Intriguing gender-swap, and maybe the most "radical" for the MCU, even though the general public has no idea who Mar-Vell originally was, lol.  (Though I can also kind of see some folks being a little confused at the Lawson-image-as-Supreme-Intelligence, since Lawson/Mar-Vell died in t he flashback but was torturing her during the third act).

Was Carole's mother even glimpsed at all?  I forget.  I remember seeing her dad in the flashbacks, though.

I found nothing objectionable about Ms. Larson's performance. I'm not all that familiar with her other movies, though, so the quirks that other folks have focused on are neither here nor there with me.

I did note the "hey why don't you smile?" aside-- I wonder was that done in reshoots?  I remember that micro-controversy on the forums.. lol..

Glad to see a solid portrayal of Maria here as a kind of proto-Monica.  And of course, she lives until the end!! (woo-hoo!)
There's obviously no excuse not to eventually have Monica eventually become (whatever name they choose, my pick is Dr. Spectrum, if they have adult Monica as a scientist before "whatever" gives her powers happens).

The film had a lot more humor than I was expecting, though it didn't come across as campy, fortunately.  I can't help but to think that the Supergirl TV show, Melissa Benoist's performance has had some influence.

Sympathetic skrulls blew my wig back, along with the veiled war refugees metaphor.  The lead guy ended up being fun to watch.
Interesting, though I suppose there's always room in future movies for some rogue factions to "continue the war" and be traditional villains.  And it never was explicitly revealed just how the homeworld was destroyed.

Ah-- Yon Rogg clearly wasn't killed at the end (fortunately), so I guess the window's open for him to come back in a future adventure.

I was expecting that Fury would get his eye shot by laser-fire, but for the way that they handled it, lol-- oh well-- My guess is if Fury didn't know what a Flerken could do he'd have tried to take a pistol to the thing himself after the scratch.. And of course, where the heck is the thing now, since it became Fury's pet?  Hmm...

I presume part 2 will take place in the present day-- or what if it doesn't, I wonder what villain(s) or threat they could use. Maybe it could be a space adventure, though that would seemingly leave little room for Fury to tag along.

I liked it. Good action, music and acting. I'd put it towards the upper side of MCU. Around Antman  movies and first Guardian movie.

Actually liked this movie and despite all the butt hurt comic geeks speaking against this movie most of the people going to movies don't care about the microcosm that is the comic book world with its shrinking audience.

Brie Larson is an award winning actress and brings her own audience and perspective to the film just like Annette Benning and Samuel Jackson.  The acting from all is good and a stand out is the newcomer who plays a very young Monica Rambeau aka Photon in the 90s!  Think Larson as CM was told to display very little emotion and to use humor throughout the film - probably from the Directors and Feige himself.

Captain Marvel reminded me of her time in Uncanny XMen way back in issues 164 to 166 where she was there during the original Brood saga and they tried to implant a brood egg in her but only she, Storm and Wolverine were powerful enough to kill the embryos.  She became Binary during that storyline and that is similar to the film when she changes to her well known costume and starts to fully use her powers.  Was rooting for Carol like back in the day when Rogue stole her powers and she was trying to come back by joining the XMen!

Movie fits right in with Captain America, Iron Man and Thor - can see this being the next phase of Avengers going into space and encountering new villains.

Thanks. I knew some of this history, but I hadn't even paid attention, or thought about the idea of them de-racializing Monica's features. I noticed how DC Comics did this with the villain/antihero Fatality a few years back.

Though this video didn't touch on it, I felt Marvel pushed Storm to the side to make Carol Danvers the top female superhero at Marvel over a decade ago. In a way I get why they did it. Marvel could fully get its money back by promoting Danvers in a way they couldn't when it came to Storm, or the X-Men for that matter. I think Storm was just the beginning of when they started putting the X-Men out to pasture in favor of the Inhumans. It's just the failed movie plans and then the failed television series made Marvel rethink their Inhumans push, and I'm guessing also the opportunity to get the X-Men back as well, also put the Inhumans back on the shelf (ergo, the "Death of the Inhumans" story).

Trolls Tried to Sink ‘Captain Marvel.’ She Triumphed.

by Maya Salam

“This is not a revolution, it’s a restoration. Girls have always read comics.”
— Kelly Sue DeConnick, the comic book writer whose reimagining of Captain Marvel was the basis of the new film

Trolls tried to torpedo the new “Captain Marvel” movie — but in the end, the shero Carol Danvers (who’s been Captain Marvel in the comic books since 2012) prevailed.

The film sailed past $500 million in ticket sales in its first week.

ICYMI: Within hours of the movie’s release on March 8 (International Women’s Day), in what appeared to be a concerted effort, some 58,000 online reviews of “Captain Marvel” had tanked its rating on Rotten Tomatoes — leaving the film with an abysmal score of around 30 percent.

Rotten Tomatoes fixed the problem by that afternoon, removing about 50,000 of the reviews, which the site said had been written before the film was released.

Among other measures, the site swiftly eliminated prerelease audience reviews altogether.

“We’re doing it to more accurately and authentically represent the voice of fans,” the site said, “while protecting our data and public forums from bad actors.”

Now, the movie’s audience score is around 62 percent, and the “Tomatometer,” which analyzes ratings from film critics, is at 79 percent, slightly below the average for Marvel movies.

But “Captain Marvel” is not the only recent female-led film in the comic or sci-fi realm to be swarmed by trolls.

As my colleague Cara Buckley wrote this week:

“The all-female remake of ‘Ghostbusters,’ ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi,’ which had a diverse cast, all found themselves in the cross hairs of armchair critics, some aligned with alt-right groups.”

Last year, a Facebook group called “Down with Disney’s Treatment of Franchises and Its Fanboys” posted an event called “Give Black Panther a Rotten Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.”

The group had also claimed responsibility for sinking scores for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

Those who appeared to have targeted “Captain Marvel” were most likely incited by comments made by Brie Larson, the titular star.

Last year, Larson vowed to seek out more underrepresented journalists after noticing she was being interviewed by mostly white men.

She had a similar critique about film critics:

“I do not need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work for him about ‘A Wrinkle in Time.’ It wasn’t made for him.”

She also told “Entertainment Tonight” that the vision for the film was clear during an early meeting with Marvel:

Make “a big feminist movie.”

Even if the trolls tried to stop her, make a big feminist movie she did.

I was watching a You Tube video that speculated the same thing. I do hope she makes it to a Captain Marvel or other MCU movie, fully powered, at some point. I thought Paris was good in the Dear White People film and really good in Chi-Raq so I'm glad she's gotten this role.
