Title: Damn, Reggie, why do you hate Black people SO DAMN MUCH!!!??
Post by: Wise Son on September 10, 2007, 05:35:44 am
From What About Our Daughters  (http://whataboutourdaughters.blogspot.com/2007/09/how-long-could-you-live-without-cable.html) (yes, she's back)
Quote
The intent of the messenger sometimes is MORE important than the message. You see Bob Johnson admitted that he was a multimedia crack dealer and was in it for the paper and nothing but the paper, but this new crew, their M.O. is to try to hide behind giving Black folks "a book learning" while engaging in their fantasies that working class Black folks are stupid and Black women are animals put here for their own entertainment. Am I the only one that has picked up on that?

So let's be clear. Debra Lee... Hates Black people, Black women in particular. Reginald Hudlin... Black people hater, middle and working class Black people in particular. Stephen Hill..Hates Black people. Now all executives at BET might not HATE Black folks, but they are indifferent and that is just as bad. If they were not indifferent, they would not work there in the same way that I am not going to ever do work that violates my core principals and beliefs.

The Klan believes you and your children are inferior. Debra Lee and her executive team believe you and your children are inferior and stupid. Did I mention they think Black folks are stupid? While Debra Lee would not dirty her hands to drag you out of your home and hang you from a tree( I HOPE), Debbie would drive by the tree you and your kids are hanging from and keep going on her way to the country club. Then she would let Regional Hudlin turn the story of your tragic death into a cartoon with a catchy beat, after all, that's the only way "weeze ig'nant BAMAs can get a book learnin.'"
...

Let's review the record shall we:

BET Execs reject video as "too intelligent for our audience."
BET Airs BET Uncut; promoting violence against Black women and taking the degradation and objectification of Black women to new cable television lows.
Reginald Hudlin says that the only way the BET audience can absorb a socially relevant message is through laughter, rhythm, and humiliation.
BET offers up "Read a Book" again, under the guise that the BAMAS can only absorb information encapsulated within rhythm, laughter, and humiliation and it is a bonus if they can laugh at the exaggerated anatomy of Black women in the process. THAT is just GRAVY to the folks that brought us BET Uncut.

Sorry, trying to keep from laughing here...

Anyway, on a slightly more serious note, I saw the pretty pathetic CNN report on RAB, and was wondering how come Reggie and Denys Cowan delcined their invitiation to appear? The writer and director of the video represented themselves perfectly well, but I was curious.

That woman is disconnected from reality.   One of the first things Debra Lee did when she took the reins of BET is to cancel BET UNCUT.  And she won't acknowledge it because it undermines her rant.

Yes, the director of the animated short and creator of the song were intelligent and well spoken...too bad the "moderator" was anything but.  That was the most biased piece of reporting I've seen in a while.  The low point had to be when the director was saying how he, like a lot of kids grew up reading MAD and CRACKED, so don't presume kids don't understand satire...and "host" jumps in and threatens to cut his mike off.

I never watched BET and just glancing through the site I glanced at this. There are many people who see bad things about Berry Gordy's MoTown but it is fair to say that he elevated the culture, through no fault of his own.

Seems the same can't be said of BET.

man Reggie...
how u gonna bring back UnCut and not tell anybody?

 8)

obviously she's watching bet to see "read a book" but why does she gotta lie about UnCut.  everyone knows that show isn't on and when it was you had to stay up late to watch it... kinda like red shoe diaries on showtime.

Yeah, it did seem like he'd have been happier with 10 minutes just to give all of the answers he already had to his own questions.

Still, how come you didn't appear yourself? Was it cause the moderator was Black and you just HATED HIM TOO DAMN MUCH? ;)

Malcolm X,  Richard Pryor and Jonathan Swift could have appeared in support of READ A BOOK and it would not have made a difference.

 ;D

Had a Richard Pryor done RAB in skit form, she'd of called him a genius for it.

I find it sadly amusing that Black folk protesting other Black folk on the Internet is now a cottage industry. You're wrong, BET's wrong, Dunbar Villiage is wrong and the NAACP is wrong.

As a substitute for positive action (or any action at all for that matter) it kinda lacks something. Like a point.

You'd have to be pretty damned dense not to see RAB as pretty broad satire. And no different than the kind of humor seen on Boondocks, really.

Does anybody sane consider the intent of this to be totally educational in nature?

I mean, its not a PSA like "I Hanker for A Hunk Of Cheese" was.

It is ashame that he or other execs when attacked, don't defend themselves; right or wrong, their positions need to be made clear. CNN needed a head whacking on that set-up piece though with the hand picked middle-class moralist droning on and on about something so clear; the video is a satire aimed at two things; the stupid club music that passes off as black top 40 radio play and the intellectual downward spiral in our community as a result of parents not taking a hand in their children's reading. The problem with WAOD, and the other reactionaries of the so-called 'Black Blogosphere' with this video is that they, as always are more obsessed with public (white) perception than the actual roots of the ills of the community. You can stop multi-billion-dollar media monster like Viacom for grinding out the sexist, racist crap but what about the misogyny in the heads of our people?
when and how do we tackle that? I suspect a simplistic answer from (and one that mirrors Gina's charge to Hudlin) where Gina believes that the way to cure misogyny is through the media. Real activism and community work is required of that, but you know that she, like the rest of the reactionary members of the black bourgeoisie (Afronerd, Cobb, etc.) don't want to get their hands dirty like that.
Talkin' to ni--az 'bout sexism? Sheeeeit, I might get shot!"

I see your point Reggie, about it not making a difference, but remember, you're not trying to win over the host of that show (who was an ass and doing a horrible job of imitating the FOX News idiot-hosts (pick a name and fill in the blank), but the viewing audience off both, CNN AND the viewers of viral vidoe on the Internet.
I'm sure Michael Morre knew what he was getting into when he got on CNN back in July with Wolf Blitzer, and he still  owned Wolfie, Gupta, AND CNN.

It's time for this woman to get exposed. McCaulley is an anti Black eugenicist who describes Black men as being Damged beyond Repair aka DBR and the majority of Black women as being genetically inferior. To this point " The New Martin Luther King" came up with the term Melineated to differentiate herself from the common inferior Black women.

This self-hating, delusional FASOOM leader is the one telling Reggie and Debra Lee that they hate Black people. If she pops up on national TV and her background doesn't get exposed something is really wrong.

My thoughts exactly, Curtis.  This woman is the basest of the base.  A person that self hates to a degree that warps her sanity and her very perception of self and self worth.  She's so busy spewing this idiocy to her  "followers" that she and they can't see how stupid and damaging it is.  I'm not angry at her, I feel pity for her than anything else, because she was obviously and irrevocably damaged by someone in her past to make her so bitter, twisted and self-loathing.

Didja check out how the CNN video report began in the first link with prompts to a children's demographic program comparing Sesame Street, Electric Co. (which btw, Morgan Freeman was just a young, bushy-eye, recurring extra!) and Schoolhouse Rock to BET's 18-34 old demographic? ???

Boy, those geniuses at CNN are critiquing that BET caters to the lowest of the low Common Denominator? ;D
For shame, Tony Harris...! :)

Sigh. I don't get it. Well I do but I don't understand why black folks spend so much energy fighting themselves when clearly there are bigger dangers to us and definitely more dangers then BET. Hell if BET is such an issue turn the channel. HBO with its new shows showing dicks on cable gets a pass but rap top ten does not.

The song on it's own is kind'a offensive.

Thanks for the link.

I have never seen Harris in this pompous and condescending manner ever on CNN. I will have to look at his demeanor during other segments and interviews before I say what I really think he is. Though from the looks of it he could be McCaulley's soulmate if he were not a damged beyond repair Black man of course.

I haven't read the link, my virtual friend however, I should have been more clear...

You can parody any kind material by borrowing a creative technique to help make a point. Every creative layer of 'Read a Book' from the key drawings, the sound, the subject matter... everything...used devices we're all familiar with to bring it to 'life'. That's what the creators of the 'Read a Book' short was doing; subliminal advertising ...from an African-American point-of-view.

The CNN report wasn't just comparing an entirely different age demographic (5-14 yr olds) but a an entirely different era (the 70s) giving the impression that the animated short was intended for children. That's what I didn't understand.

EDITED for clarity

This must be what going mad feels like... (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ublUU2ISTMU)

What is so magnificent about "f*ck spinning rims?" There have been columnists, researchers and educators who have killed themselves to get the exact same message across, yet "f*ck spinning rims" is what gets people's attention? That doesn't say a whole lot about black people, then. And will you guys PLEASE stop with the "we have to talk to them to get the message across" crap? Because we all know the message STILL isn't getting across to the audience it's supposedly aimed at. I've seen this clip at more white supremacy places that I have anywhere else. The Axis of Coonery continues to spin (no offense, Hudlin; I'm referring to the creators of the cartoon, not the supporters).

I heard an interview with the song writer yesterday.  He was saying that it is a parody of crunk.  He intentionally applied the crunk formula (simple, repetition, cursing) to spoof the style.

I used the term "satire" what I probably should of said "parody" but yeah, I took the piece to be a joke as opposed to a call to consiousness.

Did the creators of the piece ever say that RAB was intended to be a PSA for knuckleheads?

This is why Dave Chappelle quit.

In regard to Chappelle, he has never really gone into depth about that fateful day when a White staffer "laughed" in a manner that caused him to have an epiphany on his brand of sketch comedy.

It would be great to have Toure or Cousin Jeff sit down with Chappelle and have him evaluate the current "movement" against BET, Rap and whatever other target they can find.

The best and most insightful interview i've ever seen with Chappelle was on a 2HR Actors Studio special. Viewing that should be a pre-requiste for anyone who misses the genius he gave us for 3 seasons.

Too bad he's no good at it. Watching them sit on CNN and cry like little girls was the highlight of my week. "Waaaaaah, you guys don't understand satire! Waaaaaah, we're trying to reach out to the youth! Waaaaaah, you just don't GET IT! Waaaaaah, you're being mean to us!'" Hilarious.

Anybody who mentions "Read a Book" and how great it is, I counter with "Make It Burn" (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ybXc-2iEOTw), which truly was a brilliant satire on hip-hop that did everything right. It made fun of the rappers and the bling culture without pissing all over hip-hop or the people who love it.

Has there been more than one CNN interview?  Regarding the one I saw, there was nothing that sounded like crying to me.  Agree or disagree, they seemed to address their points civilly and somewhat lightheartedly.

You call it politeness, I call it bitching like little girls.

I finally watched the whole thing and I agree with Hulkster.  YMMV.

Tony Harris comes off looking like an a**clown foolish to me.  The whole setup starting with the Electric Company, Schoolhouse Rock, and Sesame Street as a basis of comparison speaks of willful misrepresentation.  I thought the songwriter and director made their points pretty well in a obviously hostile situation.  (OK, there were a couple times when the songwriter could have used a little more bass in his voice.)

Still, when the third guy didn't condemn the video sufficiently, Tony Harris jumped in himself. It was like a Daily Show spoof only he was apparently serious.

It seems to me this is a tempest in a thimble, not a teacup.

I wouldn't know about the RAB video or the micro-controversy AT ALL if I didn't hang out here.

Black folk being mad at each other is ALWAYS good press and the quickest way to get face time on the airwaves is to denouce some other brother.   It scares me that so much thought is spent on this kind of thing.

You don't like RAB or HOT GHETTO MESS, change the channel.

And this is the biggest problem. I would've been sooooooo happy had this crap just been ignored. But nooooooooo, it went all the way to CNN, proving that once again, black people have our priorities in the wrong place.

Because solving real problems takes time, and there aren't easy solutions.  But attacking a media product is good press, and getting something banned is an easy "win"...not to be confused with actual progress.

Yep.  And furthermore, they didn't even criticize the criticism that they were receiving.  They just debated the points.  One of them actually embraced and praised the criticism coming from the group of parents because it created dialogue.

I can see validity in both sides of the argument, but as far as presenting the arguments in an intelligent and dignified way, I was very pleased and impressed with the two brothas.  Unfortunately, I think that there is a modern trend among brothas and sistas today to view this a sign of weakness, thus being intelligent and dignified is somehow interpreted as being unmanly.

In reference to your points about weakness, I think it is an integral part of the Mini-Mart revolutionaries and their tactics. When BET decided to change the name of HGM to We Got To Do Better, that single act was taken not as compromise but capitulation, and even more, validation of the crtics of the show. The damage of that decision was then compounded by it giving MCcaulley legitimacy and a "victory" upon which she can build a platform for future attacks.

I am not an executive at BET and therefore am not privy to the decision making process there. Judging from Reggie's track record he probably made the concession in hopes that the attention could return to the message of the show. Obviously, it was a big mistake and it spawned much of what we are seeing now.

The appearance of weakness can't be allowed when operating under the current climate.

And will you guys PLEASE stop with the "we have to talk to them to get the message across" crap?
I interpreted it as being more 'this is what we could end up having to do to get messages across,' and even then I read it as comedic exaggeration (you know, a joke ;)). I never interpreted it as being, 'this how bad things are now.' And I do agree with you, Make it Burn, and the other stuff by those guys are great, spot-on satires as well, but I just see them as coming from a different direction, rather than a better one.

Also, good choice of 'madness' clip.

It relates to the CNN interview because the producers of RAB were not assertive enough in defending their vision of the project. When Harris pulled his low-budget imitation of O'Reilly with "I can turn your mic off" the producer should have talked even more. Call his bluff, and if he turns off the mic that will show his true intentions.

The deference the producers showed to Harris was taken advantage of. I have seen numerous interviews on CNN where the interviewer attempts to insult and/or condescend to the guest and they guest immediately checks them.

Same thing w/Hot Ghetto Mess. When you start sh*t (good or bad), you have to hold strong with it. You can't wobble. I'm not talking about compromise; I'm talking about getting straight punked. Renaming HGM was a punk move. It showed that the protesters had BET shook. You can't be shook and then try to make a show like HGM and claim it to be controversial, edgy, powerful or whatever. Powerful? You can't even keep your own title. Now nobody is taking you seriously. Same thing with RaB. Instead of calling the reporter on his sh*t, they spent way too much time (in my opinion) being bullied around. That's why while I don't always agree with Hudlin's laissez-faire way of handling things, I do understand why he chooses to be that way.

With the apoproaching O.J. and T.I. trials, the current 15 minutes surrounding the scapegoating of Black Pop culture, most notably Rap music is soon evaporating. I wouldn't be surprised to see Tina make it to Oprah's couch before its all said and done.

With the Superhead and Rap lynching episodes as the standard a Tina interview would fit the triumvirate perfectly.

To be fair, mainstream periodicals ranging from Ebony to USA Today have at least referred to Gina's blog in feature articles.  This has further increased her name recognition and thus helped changed how Black bloggers are viewed in terms of influence.

Hence, love her or hate her, Gina McCauley has had an impact on Black America.  So, it would be odd if Essence didn't have her on the Top 25 list.

Besides, there would be no list at all if you excluded those Black celebrities with critics.  Everyone has their fans and detractors.

What kind of impact? Essentially, this was the PMRC revisited on a much lesser scale during a slow news period. Hot Ghetto Mess lasted an entireity of 132 minutes on the air and the attack surrounding this blip on the continum of the Black experience is worthy of acclaim?

If they want to praise her building a cottage industry out of a non-issue then that is legitimate; but to extend it to some great campaign for the welfare of Black women is asinine.

I thought she was a funny little bird until I read the blogs of her supporters. First, I'm amazed that these little bible thumpers would befriend a boy like Black Sea Goat. He is gay. These people hate gay people, but then again these are lonely women. VERY lonely women. They probably think they can convert him. Good luck, girls!

Then you have the lovely Kitty Glendower, another WAOD supporter. She embodies the reason why there is such a thing as Post Feminism. It's funny, but here you have a 'feminist' who isn't living independently of a man (wanna bet who makes most of the money in that house hold?) and she's describing her husband as "'Mr.' Glendower this" and Mr. Glendower that.." what a hypocrit and loser.

Finally Gina, you wanna bet this woman is on somebody's payroll? I (unlike Gina) can actually say I have no proof to my claims, but anybody who constantly draws connections to the worse music out there to the horrific things that are happening to women without numbers, stats and the like, and then is in turn gven the attention that she's getting has to be an insider of some kind or at least is connected to an insider who is on some crusade to get rid of the black faces in high places in Viacom. Fine, if BET went away, we'll see if she has the spine to continue her hand wringing and cheap Sista Soulja routine. You know she won't - white guys would have to be her target - that ain't happening.

Ja Ja!

Actually, Christians don't hate gay people, but we will be honest about their lifestyle being sinful just as God is.  Anyone "Christian" who says stuff like "I hate gay people" or "God hates gay people" is more in league with Satan than Jesus.

So, the Christians at WAOD are being true to their name by respecting BlackSeaGoat and his protests against black-on-black violence even if their disagree with his lifestyle.

Or perhaps Gina gets support because she's a outlet for Black people who are frustrated with "leaders" who rail against White racism (good move), but remain silent about Black-on-Black violence (evil move).  This frustration is deepened by the fact that past civil right leaders like Dr. King had no fear of criticizing enemies within the Black community as well as without:

Exactly who are these "black leaders who don't criticize the black community"?  They are OFTEN cited by black and white talking heads (as opposed to people who do things) but I've never known one.  Jesse and Al certainly criticize black people.  They rail against lyrics, violence, etc...all the stuff these self-styled new jack "leaders" do.  And they actually leave the house sometimes.

I'm still thinking...the Nation of Islam....no.  I just don't know who they are talking about?  Perhaps this straw man argument needs to end.

Zeraze,

Of course feminists can be married, I was married to one and I curently do S&M scenes/have a relationship with another. But none of these women became feminists because daddy was paying the tuition so they can become feminist and my ex was not a feminists because she could afford to be one due to my yearly income. That's my point regarding Ms. Kitty.
You say god has some sort of commandment that judges gays so you little Christians are free to appear to be progressive. Whatever. God does not exist for people like me, so if we hate gays (which I don't) then we don't have to hide behind the bible or god to condemn people's life styles.

This little alliance is about to blow up.

Lastly, Zeraze, if you support Gina so much, then maybe you can do what she can't; provide actual facts/stats/numbers that connect
commercial rap to rape.

Thanks, we'll wait patiently for that....

They weren't able to do that with pornography. Synamon doesn't have a leg to stand on.

I dunno...maybe it's youth, maybe it's laziness, maybe it's an unhealthy level of self-esteem, but I just can't hop on her Bitter Black Bitches train. What I love most about her is that she really builds herself up as this e-thug who has to take on all the internet Ike Turners (http://whataboutourdaughters.blogspot.com/2007/09/black-blogospheres-open-secret-violence.html) and whatnot. Huh? I mean...huh? Not everybody who thinks you're a goddamned lunatic is some misogynist ready to beat you up - me least of all. I personally offered her to have a rally in front of my house, but I think she knows that my Ike Turner doesn't get expressed on the internet. Or maybe she doesn't want me to fire water balloons at her head in the dead of winter, because that's exactly what the hell is going to happen if ANY wannabe journalists (or anybody else) calls themselves marching in front of my crib.

Selling yourself as controversial and edgy...always the sign of a weak, insecure writer. I couldn't stand it when BET did it with me,  so you know she makes me roll my eyes. She's like that black guy who joined up with the Klan to protest against gays (or was it Microsoft?). Darling, they're only holding hands with you because you picked a safe cause.

Did I get teased? Oh Yeah! It was that kind of group. They sent the teacher crying from the room ( that was fascinating to me-I'd never been in a class visited by the assistant principal- I was part of a rebel band- at least til' the bell rang). Although I was a member of the CGU, I never got teased for that- I got the “smart Black fat girl exemption” not to be confuse with the “fat Black girl who can sing exemption” or the “fat Black girl who puts out exemption” or the “fat Black girl who is dating the 35 year old drug dealer who will put a cap in your a@& exemption” or the “fat Black girl who will meet you in a dark alley and beat the crap out of you and your boys exemption”. So I got the “smart fat girl exemption”, HOWEVER, I got teased for being ashy ( I couldn't help it. Mama kept getting watery cheap lotion when I needed a heavy cream with some shea butter!)

AHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I KNEW IT (http://whataboutourdaughters.blogspot.com/2007/12/my-review-of-bill-cosbys-come-on-people.html)

I can't even read her entire entry full of BS. She's trying to act like she's some kind of hood success story, but she's from EAST TEXAS. There are like...11 black people in East Texas and I'm sure she and her family made up about seven of those 11. Had she said Dallas or Houston, absolutely. Maaaaaybe even Beaumont or Port Arthur. But there is nowhere in East Texas where her fat ass would've been in any REAL danger. If her father was running around sneering at welfare recipients and didn't get chased down and beaten, she lived in a white neighborhood. Oh, her school had the DUKE program? Gee, Gina, maybe that's why you were able to get ahead! And what do you want to bet that only certain students were allowed to take it? I wasn't, because I was a transfer from a Dallas school, which meant that I wasn't allowed to take honors classes until I slept through the BS regular classes for a entire year - never mind that my standardized test scores were in the 93rd percentile statewide.

And don't get me started on her "honors P.E." crap. I spent six years on a tennis court and would've played for Xavier had FAMU not come through with the cash. The thought of her fat ass huffing and puffing and effin' up my sanctuary...tragic! If you don't look like this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v377/rattlerbrat82/tennis.jpg) in a tennis skirt, stay the hell off my court! Do you see my bony ass in Home Ec effin' up the casserole? GRRRRR!!!

(Oh, and I'm pretty sure her lazy ass could've avoided the ashy teasing if she'd HAD A JOB, like I did. You graduated #5 in your class and you didn't know how to earn a whopping ten bucks a month for some decent lotion? Vaseline? Baby oil?)

Don't pick on East Texas. My family is from that "area" so I guess by your assumption we would have made up the other 4. Anyway She didn't have to have Shea because half the folks in Texas didn't know what that is but she darn well knew what vasoline was/is.
I went to elementary school in Dallas it was very different than here in Ca. But I don't want to go there.
I always thought the best way to get your child to read was to pick up a book yourself. Any child can have the love of reading if they see you a parent/leader reading. I always gave/give my godchildren fun gifts plus a book and or something educational, I have 6 godchildren.
My daughter has library in her room of books that should, might want, and eventually will read over and over again. I have changed out her library at least 3 times and it's about time to do it again.
So maybe the message should be for the adults to pick up a gosh-darn book and read it to a child!

The funny thing is that she brags about how her family never went on welfare, but admits in the same breath that she had accessible family as far up as her great-great grandparents. Can we say D'UH, boys and girls? That would be like me bragging about how we never went on welfare because I grew up in a two-parent household. OH HAI THAR CAP'N OBVIOUS!

And yeah, Cheriel, the less said about the Dallas Independent School District (motto: HAY, IT BEETS ILLTURACY!!!111), the better. My aunt and uncle pay $1,200 a month to keep her three children out of DISD, and I will personally take up a job on the pole to help out if need be. When the average SAT score of a DISD kid is around 730, it's time to just blow the system up and start over. Yet Dallas needs a $1 billion stadium more, apparently.

I think the suck is recent - over the past 10-15 years or so. But boy, did they ever drop fast and far. The average SAT score for a Dallas ISD kid is 852, but that includes all of the magnet schools. Compare that to the Mesquite ISD, where I went to high school - 969. Richardson ISD - 1063. The national average for Texas is 995 (http://209.85.207.104/search?q=cache:bXdCmztloMoJ:filelibrary.myaasite.com/Content/13/13735/13926407.pdf+maceo+sat+scores&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us&client=firefox-a). 852, even WITH the magnet schools, is a lonnnnng way from 995 - which isn't exactly stellar.

TAKS scores aren't much better, either - out of the high schools in DISD, Madison, Molina, North Dallas, Samuell, Seagoville (SEAGOVILLE!?), Maceo, SOC and Spruce are all listed as "unacceptable" (but this was back in 2005).
