Title: The Anime Thread
Post by: karaszero on August 11, 2008, 05:48:24 am
Which films do you like? which films do you have? any news on new releases. This is mostly for my good friend Leviah Rah ;) have you seen the trailer for Dead Space? the graphics are incredible!

Good going, Giuseppe!  I haven't seen it yet, but I'll track it down on the web.  One of the theaters here is doing a one night only showing of the live-action Death Note movie.  I gotta find out the day and time and hope that I haven't already missed it.  I just picked up Black Lagoon Second Barrage, so that'll keep me busy for a while.

EDIT:  Just saw the Dead Space trailer....WOW!!  The video game looks off the hook, too!

If you are able to see the Death Note movie be sure to give it the doo-rag rating! I would like to see a live action GANTZ or BLOOD plus movie
Title: Re: The Anime Thread
Post by: Catch22 on August 11, 2008, 08:42:02 am
Yeah those would be cool...Gantz would be cool as hell live, but I think it would be better as a live-action cable series since it's more of a mission based series.  Blood+ could be more like a series of Blade movies with a supporting cast already in place.  Have you seen any of the Full Metal Panic stuff?

I haven't seen it either, but a friend of mine told me I should check it out....here's the wiki on it...it sounds pretty good...I'll have to see if I can find it.

Its old news now, but I picked up the complete Rahxephon on DVD.  I really enjoyed it.

Gotham Knights was pretty good too.

If you like superhero stuff, try the Gatchaman OVA DVD collection.

Big anime watcher here, hell we even rent over 4k dvdes at the LCS I work at.  I have a problem finding or watching anime after Ive watched something soo good.  I did the whole Naruto (fansubbed of course), Bleach (same way)...but Ive watched an anime last year and it was so good I can't even get into anything else.  Its so good, nothing compares in my book...

...give me something that will blow my mind like Claymore.  That has to be my top anime SERIES of all time.
Title: Re: The Anime Thread
Post by: karaszero on August 13, 2008, 04:22:14 am
Help us help you marv what have you seen besides claymore? what types of anime do you like? action? drama? comedy? sci-fi? I liked Gantz, Iria: Zeram the animation, Desert Punk, Samurai 7, Basilisk, Baki the grappler, Ninja scrolls the series, Blood +, Ghost in the shell:SAC (Stand alone complex). Almost forgot to add Death Note (easily the hottest anime this year)

With a recommendation like that from Marvelous, I gotta put a rush on getting my grubby little hands on the Claymore series.  I wonder when we'll get the new Golgo 13 series over here...is it too late to change my anime thread name to Duke Togo?  8)

Yeah, man...I just hope it's better than Queen Bee.  I think the new series has been on in Japan since May or so....what does that mean for US release dates?

All of the above Karas!  I pretty much like everything but in the action badassness...I cant find nothing better than Claymore.  Im waiting to see what they come out with next season in Japan.  I believe its a few more weeks.

Rahxephon is a "reworking" of Brave Raideen a giant robot anime. It's sort of a cross between an old school giant monster of week punch-fest and Evangelion, but more coherent-I still don't know what happened at the end of that series.

Didn't see Ergo Proxy, but if you liked that you probably like Gilgamesh. Here's the website:

I remember when I was discovering Anime as a kid...Transor Z, Voltron, Gatchaman (battle of the planets)...I'm starting to get that feeling again being introduced to stuff like Black Lagoon, Full Metal Panic and other things you guys are suggesting on here.  Thanks!  Now if only we could get someone to remake Space Giants, I'll REALLY be happy!

Who? you mean the goody Goldar, his wife Silvar, and their son the robot boy Gam?

BINGO!  You got it!  Man, I used to RUN top speed home from school everyday to see that show.  I think it was called Space Giants...I just remember Goldar, Silvar and Gam used to turn into rockets and beat the snot out of alien beasts and voltron-like threats!  Gimme that and a nice helping of SpecterMan and I'm good.  It's nothing but live action anime.

That was space giants...TBS used to have all that isht! Spectraman was alright, but I wanted more Ultraman and Masked Rider or as it was called in japan Kamen rider black but the japanese version not the one with the american kid

I used to watch Ultraman and SpecterMan and Space Giants on TBS, too!  I was done with Ultraman when I saw one episode where it looked like the monster he was fighting fell asleep! LOL

Not a fan of Kamen rider black?

It's kinda strange...Power Rangers turned me off of stuff like that for a good while.  I didn't discover Kamen Rider Black/Masked Rider until after PR and by then, I didn't want to see it.

Next Avengers comes out on DVD Sep 2

I'm gonna see it, but it doesn't look too promising.
Title: Re: The Anime Thread
Post by: karaszero on August 25, 2008, 01:43:53 pm
I understand how that could turn you off as the PRs were the weakest garbage out there but the original japanese version of masked rider was the bomb. It was more like an Ultraman show, he had different types of battle armor, a car and the bike that could transform! plus he would draw a katana from within his belt buckle. The fight scenes were choreographed much better than the shows that aired in america ( the live action shows like golgo 13/city hunter and the yakuza soap operas were the isht)

I've had it for about two weeks and it's pretty good.  A couple of elements were kinda sick and twisted and that was just the first 3 or 4 episodes! LOL  I can't wait to get through the rest of them.

Just looked up Black Lagoon on Wiki.

Sounds great!

I'll probably try to pick it up on the weekend.

Has anyone here seen Negima! yet? I currently following the Manga but I havent seen the anime yet.

It sort of a cross between Harry Potter and Love Hina (as insane as that sounds).

I have never seen harry potter or love hine what are they about? I thought black lagoon was one of the most underrated animes that came out last year (maybe due to death notes' popularity)

Harry Potter is the kid who goes to Hogwart's the wizard schools in those movies.

Love Hina is a "Harem Manga" about a (bad) student who gets the job of being the Super for a all-girl boarding house.

I picked up the next avengers DVD yesterday...it was alright nothing spectacular IMHO I didn't like the way the BPs kid was portrayed. I also dusted off some of my old animes Escaflowne, and WXIII patlabor the movie 3. The latest issue of WIZARD magazine stated that the Death Note live action movie would be released on DVD later this month but no date was offered

I couldn't find the box set for Black Lagoon.

So I bought the box sex for Cowboy Bebop.

When I found out someone licensed this I cringed...thoughts of Viz and Media Blasters entered my mind.  But Funimation is good most of the time with their dubs.  But I gotta say absolutely nothing beats Japanese language w/ good subtitles.  Yes, I saw it downloaded but will definitely support this series.  Definitely my favorite!

On a final silly note, after watching Claymore, no other anime has kept my interest for more that 2 to 3 episodes.  Hopefully the new season in Japan will bring some good stuff.

I have to agree with Togo, the trailers for the Hulk versus movies are the bomb! I can't wait to see them but the whole time I was looking at the next avengers I was thinking about how much better the young avengers dvd would have been because NA had too many unanswered questions Caps' son could lift up the robot Caps' shield and throw it? unbelievable

There's a new action figure set for Fist of the Northstar!  ;D

http://revoken.jp/lineup/index.html?ken

I was so mad when my 1st Kenshiro action figure got busted during delivery. It was the most articulate action figure at the time! You could even change the fists and heads to make different attacks.

But now a new series is out and they're more normal sized!

Don't laugh...but more importantly...don't sleep on Avatar: The Last Airbender.  I got hooked on this a couple of months ago, and I've finally seen every episode.  I can't believe this came from the U.S. It's definitely Anime worthy.

Finally got an "accual" dvd for Wonderful Days, a Korean ½ cg ½ animation movie.  Its a must I think for anime collectors.  It came to limited theartres a few years back but only watched it on computer...I'd say watch it on computer before buying it, great animation and CG, its not that "all shiny and chrome" stuff, it the CG where you ask yourself, "is that cg or real".  A lot times you cant tell imho.

Check it out!

Glad you enjoyed Vexille Kara!

I'm watching "The Big Windup" a.k.a Ookiku Furikabutte". It plays a lot faster than classic sports anime. Usually the characters fill in the usual stereotypes i.e. the loner, the hotheaded guy, etc. But this team has a quirkier premise in making them the underdogs. Apparently the 1st pitcher was hated in middle school because they believed he got the position from his family ties. Plus there's the fact they never won a single game. It demoralized him and he transfered out for high school, but actually he's very talented. So seeing him gain his confidence with a new team is pretty funny. He keeps making these funny faces that nobody can interpret under different circumstances.

STILL haven't watched Dead Space, but I'm about 5 episodes into Claymore and it's the TRUTH.  The ep with the voracious eater was really good.  My only pet peeve...the kid.  He annoys the hell outta me, but other than that, I really dig it.

You just getting to the good part...Teresa of the Faint Smile...

I know its old news, but I found that I liked Cowboy Bebop a lot better with the dubbed voices.  That's the only Anime I can say that about.

I'll pick up Black Lagoon as soon as I can find a complete season pack.

I'm digging Black Lagoon, I got the Second Barrage a couple months ago and I've seen the first 5 or 6 eps.  I'm tearing through Claymore right now and I'm about halfway through it.  Has anyone seen Straight Jacket? I saw a little something about it online, but I haven't seen the OVA yet.

Success, Guiseppi!!  I finished Dead Space and Claymore today.  Dead Space was pretty good and I absolutely love Claymore...even though Raki got on my last nerve!  There has to be a sequel...the way it ended with Easley and Priscilla...and with the partially awakened Claymores...there's too much there to leave on the table.

Did you think DS could have been made into a live action series/sci-fi thriller if it had a little more filler?
Title: Re: The Anime Thread
Post by: Catch22 on November 29, 2008, 11:44:09 am
I definitely think DS could have been a live action movie, but the method of conversion and the derelict spaceship just SCREAMS "Alien Ripoff".  Although I liked it, it's little more than a 90 minute advert for the game and the ending compounds that.  MM, if anything, I think playing the game probably makes you want to see the movie than, vice versa.

Can't argue with the logic there Togo, but I was intrigued by the space rock being a religious symbol worshipped by humans and a powerful organized religion pulling strings behind the scenes to get this thing to earth. I also wanted to know why the creatures were held at bay when the female hid in front of the object

I'm assuming that all of that will be addressed in the video game itself.  Like I said, this was a prelude to the game...the movie ends exactly where the game begins, so I have to believe the rock plays a big part somewhere in the game.  I haven't been playing it since I got Gears of War 2 (beat it...it was great) but when I get back to Atlanta, I'll probably pick it up again.

Gears of War II was one of the best games I've played on 360...lots of different scenarios and a good bit of atmosphere, especially in the underground levels.  I'm waiting on that Arkham game, too...but I did get the MK v. DC game, just haven't had a chance to play it yet.  If you liked the first Gears, you'll love this one, too...the last boss isn't nearly as hard as the last one in part one, but the sub bosses are a little tougher.

Night Head Genesis is bleh, 2 brothers that seem to be a lil TOO close and too affectionate for my taste.  As for Red Garden it was about some  undead modeling agency my roommate says.  Rent them first man.

you're right Marv the synopsis on night head did seem a little too gay but the graphics looked alright, the way I understood Red Garden was that the three girls are schoolgirls who are undead and must fight other undead monsters in order to have the chance to live again or they remain undead it sounded a little too much like GANTZ to me and RG is put out by madhouse. Skip Babylon AD...it should have went straight to Spike TV, after being off the scene for awhile you would have thought Dim Viesel would have taken some acting lessons! The movie has the great Michelle Yeoh in it but you would never know that she is a martial arts legend by the way they chopped her fight scenes to bits you see the beginning or end of her movements seldom the entire kick or punch, the movie is long and you don't find out what the girl is until 3/4s of the way through and amazingly Dim is able to take out two stealth bomber type planes on a ski mobile!

Kyoto Animation Studio Arson Kills 33

by Motoko Rich

(TOKYO) The attacker screamed Die! and set alight flammable liquid he had splashed around an anime studio in Kyoto, the police said, starting a blaze that killed 33 people Thursday in what appears to be Japans worst mass killing in decades.

It was a gruesome scene that shocked a nation considered one of the safest in the world, and prompted a global outpouring of grief among the many fans of anime a school of animation that has become synonymous with Japan.

The Kyoto police said the suspect was a 41-year-old man, and Japanese newspapers reported that he had been detained and hospitalized for burns.

The fire, at the studio of Kyoto Animation, was the second case of devastating violence in Japan in two months, coming just weeks after a man went on a stabbing rampage in a Tokyo suburb, attacking 17 schoolgirls, killing one of them and an adult.

The attack in Kyoto was even deadlier than the sarin subway attacks of 1995, when the Aum Shinrikyo cult killed 13 people and injured thousands.

Its death toll was also higher than after a mass stabbing at a center for people with disabilities outside Tokyo in 2016, at the time the worst mass killing in Japan since World War II.

Three dozen people were injured at the studio on Thursday, and witnesses described scenes of horror there as the fire raged: victims climbing out of windows through gushing smoke, or racing out into the street screaming for help.

The attack touched a nerve among the Japanese public, and many poured out their grief on social media.

The hashtag #prayforKyoAni had close to 260,000 tweets late Thursday evening.

The studio has produced popular shows and movies, among them The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, K-On and Clannad, and has done contract work for the world-famous anime company Studio Ghibli.

There was little known Thursday about the man believed to have set the fire or his motives.

According to NHK, the public broadcaster, he was hospitalized with burns and had told the police he had splashed flammable liquid at the studio building and set it alight.

Citing the Kyoto police, the Asahi Shimbun, one of Japans largest mainstream dailies, reported that the man had entered the building screaming Die! and then tried to escape, but collapsed on the street outside.

He was captured by members of the studios staff.

Arson is rare in Japan, and experts quoted by NHK said Thursdays fire was the worst case in decades.

In 2001, 44 people died after a fire broke out at a crowded gambling club in Tokyos busiest entertainment district.

It was investigated as arson, but the authorities could not confirm that the fire had been purposefully set.

The cultural reaction to Thursdays fire reflected Kyoto Animations popularity among fans of anime, the category of Japanese cartooning that is a backbone of the countrys popular culture and one of its major soft-power exports.

Kyoto Animation known as KyoAni among its fans was founded by Yoko Hatta and her husband, Hideaki Hatta, in 1981, and most of the studios production takes place in the building that was the site of Thursdays fire.

Whereas most major anime studios are based in Tokyo, Kyoto Animation chose to build its operations in a separate regional hub, one of Japans most popular cities among tourists, admired for its historical beauty.

The devastation at the studio, said fans, would rip a hole in the anime world.

Would it get across to people who are not familiar with anime that the fire at Kyoto Animation studio is a loss of culture, as if museums get destroyed by fire in an instant? one wrote on Twitter.

Kyoto Animation distinguished itself by paying its workers salaries, rather than by assigning piecework, as many other studios do, said Susan Napier, an expert on Japanese animation at Tufts University.

Animation is very hard work, said Ms. Napier.

Youre usually overworked and underpaid and just killing yourself to get the product out, but Kyoto Animation was trying to be a more humane company.

She said the studio was known for its high-quality series, combining science-fiction or fantasy elements with realistic plotlines and settings in high schools or real cities in Japan.

With roots going back to the early 20th century, anime has attracted an international following through artists like Hayao Miyazaki, whose feature Spirited Away won an Oscar in 2003, and Makoto Shinkai, whose movie Your Name was a global phenomenon, particularly in China.

Mr. Shinkai expressed support for the Kyoto Animation staff on Thursday.

Everyone at Kyoto Animation, stay safe, he wrote on Twitter in a message that was recirculated almost 19,000 times.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also expressed his sympathy.

Today, we had many casualties in a fatal arson attack that happened in Kyoto, Mr. Abe wrote on Twitter.

It is so horrifying that I am at a loss for words. Id like to express my deepest condolences to the victims. I offer my thoughts to those who have been wounded and pray for their recovery, by even one day.

Witnesses who spoke to Japanese news outlets described grim scenes near the studio.

According to The Mainichi Shimbun, a large daily, a woman in her 60s living near the building said she had seen a young woman, her entire body burned, screaming and running into a nearby shop, begging for help.

The witness said the woman was bleeding, her clothing torn and her feet bare.

It took a long time until the ambulance arrived, she told The Mainichi.

All I could do was to spray water over her under the fire departments instruction. She was eventually transferred to an ambulance.

According to NHK, the police are investigating a report by a clerk at a gas station about a quarter-mile from the studio who said a man in his 30s or 40s, wearing a red T-shirt and a backpack, bought about 10 gallons of gas at 10 Thursday morning.

NHK reported that the man carried away the two gas cans on a hand cart, saying he would use them in a power generator.

NHK reported that an official at the Kyoto City Fire Department said that most of the 20 people who were found dead on the stairs that led from the third floor of the studio building to the rooftop were lying on top of one another right near the door to the roof.

When rescuers reached the roof, the door was closed, though not locked.
