Title: The Divas hit Marvel!
Post by: Tahdigga on April 15, 2009, 06:04:36 am
Marvel has announced a new series called Marvel Divas featuring Hellcat, Black Cat, Pulsar and Firestar. It's pitch is essentially "Sex and the City" with Marvel superheroines.

quote:
The idea behind the series was to have some sudsy fun and lift the curtain a bit and take a peep at some of our most fabulous super heroines," says Marvel's Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, "In the series, they're an unlikely foursome of friends–Black Cat, Hell Cat, Firestar, and Photon–with TWO things in common: They're all leading double-lives and they're all having romantic trouble. The pitch started as "Sex and the City" in the Marvel Universe, and there's definitely that "naughty" element to it, but I also think the series is doing to a deeper place, asking question about what it means…truly means…to be a woman in an industry dominated by testosterone and guns. (And I mean both the super hero industry and the comic book industry.) But mostly it's just a lot of hot fun."

MARVEL DIVAS NEWS!! (http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=92159514&blogId=482150960)

Peter David had a similar idea, with She-Hulk forming an informal all-woman superhero group called the "Lady Liberators."

This looks like it could have potential to be a fun read. It's got Monica Rambeau for one!

But I do have a small problem with her not having a mask like the rest of them, but it's not really a big deal. Why did they add Firestar to the lineup? When Pulsar can do the same things and alot better and faster. By having Black Cat and Hell Cat on the same team may seem a little like overkill. Or is this a set up for a rivalry...ala catfight? How many red heads do you need?

We have energy based characters, two agile/cat-like characters. I would have much rather seen some physical beef or something different. Couldn't they have dragged a newly cancelled She-Hulk to this mini just to add some muscle to the group.

It just seems like a very weird team. I like the usage of Monica again, because the only other place I've seen her recently is Black Panther. I can't help but think maybe throwing in some different mutants like Magma or Karma, would mix it up.

The premise and idea seems a little sexiest, but I'll wait and reserve real judgement once I see how Aguirre-Sacasa writes Marvel Divas.

Hmm. I wouldn't go by the cover too much, that's just J. Scott Campbell, who seems to be doing a few covrs lately (like BP). But the idea doesn't inspire me. Maybe it's just the references to Sex in the City, and that 'they all have romantic problems.' Because. if it's about superheroines' lives out of costume, it must be all about romantic problems right? That's what women do, isn't it?

It could be good if it can avoid cliché, but that's not a promising start.

hm... if only J. Scott could do the interiors art as well..

so.. does this take into account the Dark Reign events..?  I remember Firestar retiring in the aftermath of Civil War..

I hope Monica is portrayed with dignity, as there is usually a 'dingbat' in these type of series (not to mention the golddigger and the sack-hopper)..

suggestion for recurring male- Monica & Jericho Drumm- the new orleans connection; both virtually ignored by the press on Marvel earth.. "b-list" status..

hee-hee..
If memory serves, during Kurt Busiek's run on Avengers, he addressed the radiation side effects issue; Hank Pym's tests found that what should have been Angelica's natural immunity to side effects from her own powers never kicked in; he designed an updated outfit for her that would safely diffuse the radiation generated by her own body and build up her proper immunity..

the 'breakup' with Vance happened somewhere.. according to Wiki-- "^ I "Heart" Marvel: Masked Intentions One shot"

I REALLY like the idea of a M.U. "Sex In The City"-like book. The Marvel characters lend themselves to this kind of storytelling as they are so down to Earth (most of them anyway).

But this is a really weird grouping they have got for themselves.

Can't see any reason why these four would be friends at all.

Also, how do you do a book like this and NOT have She-Hulk in it? She's practially Miranda with Super-Powers.

I'm goig to have to pick this one up to see how they pull this off.

Quote from: Aguirre-Sacasa Talks Marvel Divas
“With Photon, Monica Rambeau, I wanted to pick up a thread that Reggie Hudlin had introduced in 'Black Panther,' that she was part of a team that went down to New Orleans to help with Post-Katrina reconstruction, which led to a run-in with vampires and an interaction with Brother Voodoo. I have a real fondness for Marvel's supernatural characters, so I started imagining, what if Monica and Voodoo had a fling in the Big Easy? And what if it wasn’t 100% over?

BV n .Monica--as a fan of hers and not of his, I don't like the idea, but it got me thinking--with BV's new job, as a couple, they'd out power the other power couple, Storm and Ororo, and every other couple in Marvel.

She can only fly because she's made of light.

She's a skrull.

First issue hits stands today--
based on the CBR review....
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=user_review&id=1168

The undercurrent of Puritanism in fandom continues to astound me.  I’m baffled as to the ‘exploitive’ nature of the cover.  With the exception of Firestar being put back in her original outfit, these are the up-to-date outfits of the protagonists; J Scott Campbell draws lovely curvy women.  So does Frank Cho.  Get over it.  If it was a ‘lingerie party’ alternate cover, we could talk exploitive then (and as long as the artist was on-point, I’d still have trouble complaining.)

Lessons learned from #1-

1) hmm... I have to learn how to make jambalaya... (is seafood absolutely necessary, 'cause I'm allergic..)

2) monique doesn't like pillow-talk (darn...)

3) Hank Pym's radiation-absorbing upgrade of Firestar's costume didn't work (or was too late?)

Lots of interesting stuff in the first issue.

Hellcat is the narrator for the story, Monica/Photon's the hardass, Black Cat is the adventuress and Firestar is the girl next door.

The book starts out decidedly light in tone and explains that the four met at a singles night that was spectacularly unsucessful.

Other that thier mutual unluckness in love the four seem to share a mutual resentment of the "A-Listers" Sue Richards, Storm, She-Hulk and White Queen.

There's and entended bar scene where the Divas talk to each other about thier various man problems.

The book ends with Firestar dropping a bombshell on the group that could well change the tone of the series.

This is fun but if you're an action fan look elsewhere as the issue is mostly humorous chat.

A) THAT Henry Pym might very well have been a Skrull.

B) If I remember rightly, the new costume that Pym gave was supposed to heal her the more she used her powers while in it. Then she retired. Maybe retiring for her was like stopping the treatments.

When did Monica become the angry black female Marvel? ::)

Well I guess after all the years of disrespect, she's had enough of Marvel's mess!

I have to admit issue 1 made me chuckle a few times.

I'm really wondering where this Brother/Doctor Voodoo thing is going?

If it doesn't work out maybe Blue Marvel would be a cool match up, who knows.

Next to T'Challa and Ororo, it would be nice to see another power couple.

This was a fun little series, more about bonding and friendship than butt kicking. They managed to stay away from the more salacious aspects of Sex And The City.

Its interesting that Puma got dumped by the Black Cat for basically telling her the truth. Is even funnier that Photon can only be in a relationship with Doctor Drumm(I refuse to call him Doctor Voodoo ::) ) as long as she doesn't actually CALL it a relationship. Then you've got Hellcat and her ex the Son Of Satan. ;D

The only person in the group who isn't lying to themselves is Firestar.

She misses Justice and says so. She scared she'll die of Cancer and says that. She refuses to have her friends sacrifice themselves for her and she says so.

I'd like to see a sequel to this with possibly other (more popularl) characters.
