Ahh, grits. Many a day I wondered why my friends thought of this meal as so delicious. I decided to try it, though the butter thing was a major turn off. Anyways, it tasted awful. I will never go near the stuff again.

Thus oatmeal takes this. Easily.

Hmmm... I've heard the yanks singing the praises of grits for so long, but it's interesting to hear that a fellow 'outsider' doesn't share their esteem of them. To be honest, I find the name offputting enough, like being asked, 'here, try this delicious hot bowl of tarmack!' :P

I've only ever tried oatmeal, so I don't hink I can vote here.

Wise - Perhaps it would be more pleasant if you think of it (or them) as ground hominy.

Toya - Please give it another try.  Grits can be very delicious if prepared correctly.  And can be seasoned and garnished to your liking.

Lion - Forgive them, they're foreigners.   ::)

Wise, looks like we're being percecuted in the name of Grits!! Once was more than enough to satisfy my curiousity. But who knows maybe when I'm in a fear factor mood I'll give it another go. Until then, Oatmeal tastes so much better.

Huh...I don't really think of Oatmeal and Grits as competing. I generally have grits as a side dish, while oatmeal and cream of wheat are a breakfast in themselves. Likewise, oatmeal and cream of wheat are usually flavored with sweet things (brown sugar, maple syrup), while grits are buttery and salty.

Have been forced to eat grits as a kid (and rarely do it as an adult)....eat more oatmeal whether in cookies or rolled organic oats with boiled water and dried cherries with raw organic honey now.   ;D .....so oatmeal wins another vote.

Wise, looks like we're being percecuted in the name of Grits!!
Yeah, these Americans are crazy! Personally, having said that the name makes it sound unappealing, I was just glad no one brought up the fact that one of England's traditional puddings is Spotted Dick.
Once was more than enough to satisfy my curiousity. But who knows maybe when I'm in a fear factor mood I'll give it another go. Until then, Oatmeal tastes so much better.
Well, let me know. I'm considering you my flavour-crash-test-dummy on this matter.

Sure, but do update me on the Spotted Dick delicacy(sorry man, you put it out there). I hope it isn't too limp, or too stiff.  ;D

Fnar! Well, it is normally served with custard, so the imagery gets more... interesting.

When well done, it is quite firm, and very filling. If served with golden syrup as well, it does get a bit limp, but it's worth it. Few things are more satifying than a nice, warm pile of spotted dick. Mmmmm.
 ;D
Very fattening, like most british desserts.

Grits is the greater delicacy.
Oatmeal has to be of a certain type to be palatable.
Grits is good no matter what!

Some maple or peach flavored oatmeal anyday over grits. I'll take Cream of Wheat over all of it any day of the week.

Or some cheese eggs, with thick buttermilk pancakes, maybe a little bacon...

seems like grits you can manipulate more than a few different ways depending on your tastes--  add sugar/honey, etc., on one hand or add salt/pepper and/or cheese on the other..
I haven't heard of anyone touching up oatmeal for a non-sweet context..

Hmm... I haven't tried gravy yet (at least not intentionally).  So: which is the best: chicken, turkey, or beef?

I also think I'll try jalapeno/habanero cheese with grits whenever I can remember..

Easy.
Grits.
I may have posted already, but I'm doing it again because buttered grits and cheddar cheese wins every time.
And don't even get me started about mixing my scrambled eggs into it.
