He realized Republicans in Pennsylvania have branded him a traitor... and more importantly, NOBODY interesting was running in the Democratic primary...  should be a fun race!

He did it for survival because he wasn't going to win the primary.  I'm never a fan of politicians switching parties while in office.  People voted for him as one thing and now have another.  I feel bad for his staff.  I was in his office yesterday and it was a mad house.  The phone was ringing off the hook and his front office staff looked like they were about to lose it.

From what I read yesterday, there really wasn't too much competition from the PA Democrats.  It was Republican Pat Toomey who was trouncing him in the polls.

Rasmussen Poll (http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_2010/election_2010_senate_elections/pennsylvania/election_2010_pennsylvania_republican_senate_primary)

Jesse's dead-on.  Repubs here are rabid, and Toomey makes Santorum look moderate.  Specter's finally admitting disillusionment with that faction of the state party he never had to begin with.  There were/are no Democrats of note running in the primary, much less who could beat either of the Republican candidates.  The guy was a former Philly DA who was tough on crime.  That only plays in Dixie-vania for oh-so-long before the gun-nuts and zealots that "don't exist" here want to take it further.  Toomey is riding the wave of Obama-polarization that seems to be rejuvenating his party.  The momentum should take him to the dance, but it won't woo back the moderates who left in November.  It really won't help that Fed Aid should be hard at work repairing some dozen or so crumbling bridges throughout the Poconos and Interstate Highways by then.

I honestly doubt the office is getting any more nasty calls now than when he voted for the second Stimulus plan.. soooo  other than changing the stuffed animals around the office, should they really be that stressed.   His political allies aren't going anywhere, and it's not like he's transformed into some Democratic shill.  I say enjoy the ride, and welcome to the party, Arlen!

I'm not too sure about that...his staff that is.  I personally don't mind working for either party.  I worked on the Senate Finance Committee for 2 years (during the switch in power) and I was perfectly happy under both Senators.  But some people get a real bug up their butt about that.  I have a friend who works on Specter's a campaign team and last I heard he was thinking about quitting because of the switch.  I guess we'll just have to wait another 18 months to see how this all plays out.

Just an update, my friend in the Senate said that things were nuts today in Specter's office and that there were many resignations.  I hope it is reported on because I find it interesting...its not like there are a plethora of jobs out there for Republicans these days...would probably be smart to just ride it out, even if you were upset.

I wouldn't doubt it. I wouldn't be surprised if Specter started getting death threats from people elevating him to the level of Judas. Switching to Democrat is bad enough, but switching to Democrat and providing the number 60 HAS to have people fuming.

Not me, though. Teeheehee...

what is the big deal? I'm one of those "moderates" that is embarrassed to admit that I am slightly right leaning at times regarding some of the morons that is out there.

My friend just told me that Specter's entire Judiciary Committee staff was laid off because he was no longer ranking member....that's a lot of people out of a job.  He's nervous that his boss might move to Judiciary Committee and he could lose his job...crap.

That's why I tell these people never to blindly follow politicians they work for because they could care less about what happens to staff.  That's politics for ya.

Almost 60. That filibuster-proof magic number now depends on - wait for it...
Al Franken! You couldn't make this stuff up.

Maybe 59 of 99 is enough though. Does anybody know?

Draw a card from (Smithsonian) library.  Well, well...

A US Supreme Court judge, Justice David Souter, is reported to be retiring after nearly two decades, giving US President Barack Obama his first chance to fill a vacancy in America's highest court.

Within 4-8 years, maybe even a possibility for two more supreme court appointments.

1 in the Executive branch | 3-of-9 in the Judicial branch| 60 in the Legislative branch are good prospects.  Good prospects, indeed.

Senator Franken says he's 'thrilled' (http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/06/30/franken.ruling/index.html) to be Minnesota's newest senator! ;D  ...and that makes 60 seats!
