IOC HITS BACK AT OVER-COMMERCIALISATION CRITICISM
Tue, 24/10/2006 - 09:55

Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee hit back at criticism from some quarters that the Olympic Games are getting over-commercialised.

"I would be very surprised by what people say because ... if you look at the Olympic Games, you will not see advertising and billboards in the stadium like you would see in all other major sports competitions," said Rogge.

"And, we are the only major sports competition where there is no prize money for the athletes," he added. "If the IOC did not get the support of the commercial world and the television rights, then we could not afford to spend money in developing countries as we do now."

Around 94 per cent of the revenues from the IOC's marketing programme are used to assist developing countries and the organising committee of each Olympic Games, said Rogge. “We will be paying an excess of 1 billion US dollars to BOCOG. That is the support of the IOC to BOCOG."
