Title: Forum Requests
Post by: Curtis Metcalf on November 30, 2006, 10:22:19 am
All right.  We've updated SMF, allowed 100x100 avatars, working on smileys...
What else do you HEFFAs want?   ;)

Forum requests and discussions go here.

what about adding another title name for members w/ 1000 post, 1500, etc.....?

after 500 post and beyond, you have the title hero member.  we need to come up w/ a new title name for HEF w/ 1000 - 1500 post, 1500 - 2000, etc.....

holla back

We can do that.  What's the next level(s) called?  After Hero Member what?  Super Hero?  What else?
Also, we could start to run out of space for stars.  I could demote them all by one star so that lowly newbies start out with no stars.  Probably a good idea anyway.

We can start those threads out on the current comics boards.  If we get a critical mass of them, I'll put them all together in a new board.  How's that?

Just a quick thought though ... about the "subsections" within categories of the forum -- if you have toooo many, it becomes more time consuming to navigate to see what's been newly posted.  Have to go to 3, 4, 5, .. 10(?) subsections to check out what you originally had to go to just one section to see.  So my suggestion would be not to create a whole lot more subsections within the broader categories of the Forum.  Those broad categories are good enough to tell the viewer the tenor of what to expect in the category (movies, music, politics, general stuff, etc.).   Anyways, that's my two cents.   ;D

There is a trade-off between being able to find a thread (assuming it's on the "correct" board) and having too many boards to look through.  Right now, we have 7 categories and 12 boards.

Do you all have any suggestions for which boards to remove / merge?  It seems to me that we could merge the Spider-Man board into the Other Comics board.  What about the new Hard Choices and In The News boards?  Keep them or merge them back into General Discussion?  Other suggestions?

So now we have 11 boards in 7 categories.  Other suggestions / thoughts on board organization?

Bye Bye Spidey.  (Reginald hasn't done his Spidey for quite some time now ... which is too bad for all of us).

I kinda think the "in the news" isn't needed, because we used to just talk about non-political stuff in the news in the general section anyway, which seemed right to me.

I think the "hard choices" one does make sense, because there seems to be so many of 'em and it is a genre all to itself.

Entertainment business (Or maybe even straight business) - Whether it be about movie, music, wrestling, comics, football, etc. Place to talk about the "boring" stuff, such as networking, contracts, advice, etc. A place not to talk about the screenplay, but more about what to do with it after you write it. Curtis or one of the other cats might be able to think of a better way to put it. I'd say the emphasis would be more on the business aspect.

If you go for it, it might be wise to have 2 additional rules...

1.) No solicitations of any kind. Any solicitation in that section will be deleted. (Translated: No posting "HEY REGGIE!!! I'VE GOT THIS SCREENPLAY I WANT YOU TO READ...")

2.) It IS okay to announce upcoming/current projects... like Redjack's Red Line or that Tyler Perry movie with our own DJ Mastyrmnd.

Just an idea.

hahahahha...

Speaking of that, I have an idea.

WHen i used to post on the boards at IGN (with my white brothers and sisters), we had a thread called "Good Morning All".
And that thread was our general talk about our lives thread.
i think we need a thread for us to just chat with one another on a daily basis just to say "hey...this is what's going on in my life today."

that way this family that i called the HEF (or HEFfas) will at least know to go to a certain thread in order to catch up on things...90 different threads to talk about person ish is a lil' much, wouldn't u say?

Suggestion:

Every month, we have a thread for discussion based on the current BP book out (#24, #23, etc). I suggest a child board (also known as a subboard) be made archiving all the old issue threads. This way, it would be easier to find the older issue threads. For example, someone looking for the wedding issue thread would be able to find it in the archives faster than using the "search" option (which is really a useless piece of dreck) or sifting through all the threads in the BP section. The current issue thread would stay in the 'Black Panther' section, then would be moved to the archived section once the new book comes out.

Suggestion:

Have a stickied thread on the "Black Panther" board solely for media sightings, news, and interviews. That way, we don't have separate threads for "I saw Reggie on NBC" and "I saw Reggie at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles"; they'll all be posted in one thread.

Minor suggestion:

Music, Politics & Sports don't need their own separate category; there's no reason why they shouldn't be listed under "general" as well. If there is only one board for one category, there's no real need for it to be categorized.

Those are just the standard icons that come w/the software. When I made my forum, I deleted them from the server and uploaded my own. Hudlin can do the same, but it would require having a bunch of icons premade. But it can be done - I have a whole section of nothing but BP and Storm icons.

Is there anyway to "unsubscribe" to a post?  There are posts I commented in months ago that show up under "new replies to your post."  Many times, the conversation has gone off in a different direction and I am no longer interested in the topic, and wish I could stop it from showing up in that area.

Any way that can be done? (assuming that made sense)

To make a hyperlink, i.e. text that takes you to a web page when you click it, do the following:

1. type and highlight your text
2. click the Insert Hyperlink button (2nd row, 3rd from the left, just below the Underline button)
3. your text is now surrounded by url /url tags in brackets []. Modify the leading one as follows: [url=http://www.website.com

   *add the part in red

Here's a link to Hudlin Entertainment. (http://www.hudlinentertainment.com/)
You can hit quote on this message to see how this example works.

I hope this helps.

Hi folks,

Just added a couple of new boards under the How Ya Livin' section:
Kids & Family
Technology

I moved a couple of old threads to the Technology section. Are there some more that need relocating to either board?
Let me know...

It's HEF streamlining at its best! ;D

Shouldn't we have a subsection in the Forum to discuss books?  ???

We have sections for comic books (only), for movies, for show business, for politics, for sports, etc ... but NOT A SECTION FOR BOOKS. Regular ol' books. I'm sure from time to time some of us would like to share thoughts we have about books we have read. Don't need to be "new releases" ... just books that we happened to pick up ... fiction and nonfiction.

If we find a fun or interesting book, others might like to know about it.

I know there is the thread "What are we reading" but the problem with that is that it doesn't really allow extensive discussion of one book at a time, because every book and every comment on every book get all meshed together. Would be better, in my view, if we had a separate section of the Forum for books, so that members could look at a specific thread that discusses a single book. Just as we do for movies, etc. That way, later on, one could scan the "Books" section of the Forum from time to time, see the titles that sound interesting, read 'em, and discuss 'em.

Just a thought. :)

... so I wonder if a "Books" section will be created on the Forum? With me and Magic Wand expressing total agreement, there is good reason to believe that the idea has broad-based support.   ;D

A book section? sounds good. We tend to do alot reading and sometimes you never know whats out there or may be of interest to you until you see it or hear it about from someone you "trust"

O ye of little faith...

Ask, and ye shall receive. Ye have not, Because ye ask not...

Oh, wait. You did ask. Never mind.  ;)
Do check out the brand new Books Board in the How Ya Livin' section. I moved the What are we reading? thread in there to kick things off.

Interviews, projects, reflections etc. that will stay up permanently.

Title: EVENTS and INVITATIONS Section
Post by: michaelintp on January 11, 2012, 10:20:29 pm
I think it would be great if there were an EVENTS and INVITATIONS section of the Forum.  Many of us live in major metropolitan areas, and there are events where we live that others might like to attend with us.  Or even private events, if folk would like to extend the invitation.  It would be a great way to share news of events of common interest, and for people to meet in person, if they wish to.

Reaction???

Won't affect me here in the UK, but it sounds like a great idea. One of the things I'm looking forward to whenever I do get to the US is meeting up in person with some HEFfas, and a section like that would help.

Hah, that's the cool thing, you're already doing it.
For example, check out The YouTube thread: gems and garbage (http://hudlinentertainment.com/smf/index.php?topic=1049.0).

All you have to do is put in the URL of the video (from YouTube, Vimeo, and dozens of other video sites) directly in your post. No BBC codes required.

If I could "Like" that post, I would! (Yes... I know... I've been on Facebook too long.) That makes the video threads THAT much more awesome and interactive.

This isn't a request
It's more or less a shout out
The HEF site always loads so quickly
The options allow for such creative postings
In fact it almost reminds me of glorious Three Channel TV
And I mean that as only a Baby Boomer could say it: Nothin' but Love

The result will be to pressure uniformity in thought and speech.

Not to mention another vehicle for haters to ply their trade.

EDIT:

Reggie,
....Understand, my friend, that the shear volume in the response to your one sentence:

I think folks should be able to "like" "dislike" "love" comments.
"Any other reactions..."?

Speaks volumes more than the subjectivity of "Like" / "Dislike" / "Love"
