Title: Steely Dan or the Police?
Post by: Princesa on May 04, 2012, 09:06:55 am
I came up with this by way of Pandora Radio, I'm liking them both but...

While I like Steely Dan, I would never go out of my way to listen to them.  On the flip side, I love the Police (and Sting's solo stuff), so it's an easy one for me.

"New York to the heart but got love for all..."- Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz

Heh. Wow.  I picked up both boxed sets some years back.. great stuff overall, though I don't listen to the discs as much, lately.  For the hip-hop producers, lots of slept-on un-mined grooves and riffs to sample from here.   ;) (shout out to Lion)

I'd give the edge to the Police, if only for being a largely self contained unit with Sting, Copeland and Summers-- with Steely Dan, you had the core of Fagen and Becker, but there was often a semi-rotating lineup of studio-session folks and touring personnel, right?

I literally didn't know that was a SD track until two days ago. I also didn't know Michael McDonald was in the group or so people tell me.

Ever heard De La Soul's "Eye Know"?

Agree 100%!
The Police had a lot more dance-friendly, funky grooves and reggae-like bass lines.

Both groups are excellent but I have to give it to The Police.

Actually he began his career it seems as a SD backup vocalist prior to the Doobies.

Though I really like Steely Dan's "Peg" and "Do it Again", I'm going with the Police.

This is one of the best musical hard choices we've had. I've been listening to Steely Dan Pandora station and I'm going with them. As much as I like The Police, I also really like the warm and sound and arrangements of the Steely Dan body of work.

Big surprise, I had the same reaction as you. Very hard choice.  And it hit while I was in a real Steely Dan phase.  So I thought i was being influenced even though I go through my Police runs too.  But you summed it up. Warmth.  Which is why I also put Stevie over Prince.

Speaking of Steely Dan and Michael McDonald...this looks AWESOME!  Definitely going to the show in August!
