General Discussion / Re: Astro-inspired collectibles?
« on: August 18, 2015, 08:48:22 pm »

I want to select additional thematically appropriate items.  What suggestions might you have for other cool collectibles?

How about a sizable collection of seed packets?
Preferably, Romaine lettuce.

Very tasty when properly grown.

Seeds?
For auction?
At an astro-themed event?

So far I have a Cockpit USA bomber jacket, an Endeavor snowboard (same name as one of the orbitors) signed by the astros, an Edwin Hubble snowboarder jacket, NY Times History of Aviation, NY Times History of Space, Lonely Planet's World,  a telescope, vintage Life Magazine signed by the Apollo astros, Blue Man Group tix, Soul Food by Adrian Miller (Adrian's joining us too!) dinner with an astronaut, breakfast with Lt. Uhura, NAO robot, astro-inspired jewlery, a fabulous signed painting from the incredible Mshindo, a photograph of earth from space signed by the astro that shot it and other items pending.
Y'all should come!  It's going to be EPIC!

Gentlemen of HEF,

I'd like to request some of your brilliant ideas.

I am helping to raise funds via auction for the http://www.ourshadesofblue.org/about-us/ next month in Denver.

The event honoring Nichelle "Lt. Uhura" Nichols from the original Star Trek will feature a Black astronaut reunion.
It's going to be EPIC!

For the auction, we already have two hours in a B-777 simulator and a quadricopter.
I've got some astronaut-inspired paintings coming from a renowned artist in NY and some bronze sculptures from Ed Dwight, Jr.  The traditional holiday get-away and signed sports memorabilia has already been secured.  I'm negotiating for cool loot from the Tuskegee Airmen museum and may get something from the Mothership Connection.

I want to select additional thematically appropriate items.  What suggestions might you have for other cool collectibles?

General Discussion / Re: Moving - Need Advice
« on: July 08, 2015, 03:03:54 pm »
Congratz JLI Jesse!
That's great news!

Regarding moving, I think companies charge by the pound, so REDUCE the "lot of crap" that you're moving to ONLY THE ESSENTIALS.  That'll save you a boat-load of money right there!
Consider giving away some of stuff to the two dudes with a truck that are willing to move you to CT for a reasonable price.
Seriously.
Get your friends and family  on each end to help upload and off-load.  Beer and pizza?
Buy your own insurance for transporter that moves your things.
Good Luck!

Hard Choices / Re: MENACE II SOCIETY or SET IT OFF?

Not a hard choice at all, Reg!

SET IT OFF!

I can watch it over and over again.
The characters are funny and beautiful.  The plot is engaging.  The soundtrack is AMAZING.

I don't even remember that other movie.

In America?

White and male.

Anywhere else, Chinese and male.

Chinese and male in Europe?  In Latin America?  Why is that better than white and male in those places?

Because Chinese men quietly go about their business of gathering intel from all over the world via the universities/colleges and technology organizations.  They take the intel home for adaptation to their own practices or they catalog it for later use.  They accomplish this with minimal push-back, because they're not perceived as threatening.
In Amurika, brute and brawn still trump intelligence. :-\

Annie. Try as much as I can, I can't sit through The Wiz.
Both are torture to me.

LOL!

Hard Choices / Re: Ice Cream Or Candy?

Ice Cream was always better back in the day when you helped Grandma make it from scratch with the ol hand crank maker, rock salt etc.

See.....I didn't like Grandma's ice cream nearly as much as I love Baskin Robbins or Edy's.  (Sorry, Grandmommy).
31 flavors is hard to compete with.
THEN there's that decadent ass Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey!  Granny never made that!

I'm not doing much of either these days, however, given only the two to choose from, WONDER bread all the way, Baby!

I've never been that interested in Hawaii, therefore have never been.
Jamaica is cool for the rasta/reggae culture.  It's a gorgeous island with Black people running it.
May be corrupt.
Feels a bit homey in that way.
Comfortable.
Inexpensive.

Confession: I've never seen Purple Rain. I remember when it hit television, Mom and Dad wouldn't let me see it.

It's on my list.

*Clutches pearls*

Agreeing 500% with Curtis.
I can watch ANY clip of Purple Rain and become completely enamored all over again.
The Wiz...not so much.
