General Discussion / Internet Scams - Are we really that stupid?
« on: February 17, 2010, 10:41:00 am »
Long story wife turns 30 this year and she's always wanted a Nissan 300zx, the 1990-1994 versions.  Well, I've found quite a few advertised but it seems like 3 out of every 4 I respond to are just a scam.  I mean, the WAY too good to be true scam or the "you can't really believe I'd fall for this scam"!  One guy wanted me to send him $3000 through eBay on the promise of the money being held in escrow until I decided to purchase his vehicle after he has it delivered for free for a 4 to 5 day "test drive".  Slight problem, I'm an eBay-a-holic (my secret shame)...I know for a fact that eBay motors does not do escrow.  DUH!!  What is it with people?  Has the internet made the con men more bold and dulled the senses of the consumer?    I'll tell you what, my wife better love this car...if I ever find a real one.  Anyone else have a story of internet treachery??

Other Comics / Old Man Logan

Has anyone else been checking this out?  I swore off of buying Wolvie a while back, but I read the first issue of this in the comic shop and I must admit...I was hooked.  It's been a pretty good ride with some interesting, alternate future riffs in it.

*Spider-Man has a black daughter and grand-daughter.

*Wolvie is a pacifist that won't ever pop his claws again.

*The Hulks kids have a strange The-Hills-Have-Eyes vibe about them and their basically slum lords.

*99% of all the heroes are dead and ain't coming back.

I gotta give it to Millar, he's made me read Wolverine again and actually really, really enjoy it.  It's made me almost forget that Loeb train wreck that was Wolverine.  It's not hard to find, they've got 3 or 4 printings of each issue out right about now.  Check it out.

General Discussion / Officer Delayed NFL Player as Relative Died
« on: March 26, 2009, 08:38:14 am »
What the hell is wrong with the police these days.  There really should be a more intensive psych evaluation for some of these guys.

Officer delayed Moats as relative died

PLANO, Texas -- A Dallas police officer who delayed Houston Texans' running back Ryan Moats from visiting his mother-in-law before she died in a Plano hospital has been reassigned to dispatch pending an investigation.

Moats, his wife and other family members rushed from their suburban Dallas home to Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano during the early hours of March 18 after getting word around midnight that Moats' mother-in-law, Jonetta Collinsworth, was dying. She had breast cancer.

According to Dallas-area media reports, Moats' vehicle, which rolled through a red light, was stopped by Officer Robert Powell in the hospital's parking lot.

Powell kept Moats and another family member for 13 minutes, threatening Moats with arrest and lecturing him. By the time Moats was released and entered the hospital, Jonetta Collinsworth had died.

General Discussion / This Could Only Happen To Catch22
« on: January 08, 2009, 06:55:20 pm »
You guys will not believe what happened to me today.  Here we go...

On Monday, my lazy mailman left a certified mail notice in my mailbox...nevermind that my wife is at home and waving at him through the window.  But I digress... Well, I get this notice when I get home, it's from GA Driver Services and I think it's a ticket from a red light camera so I'm upset, but I figure if I did it, then so be it!  Well, since I telecommute on Thursdays, I decided to go pick up my red light ticket and pay it online when I got home.  Well, imagine my surprise when I open up the certified letter and I find out that my license is being suspended because of FAILURE TO PAY CHILD SUPPORT!

The problem there is...the only child I have is my daughter and last I checked...she was still living with me and my wife, her mother.  I had to spend over 4 hours today in the Child Support Services office talking to folks who's parents HAD to be first cousins to get this crap straightened out.   It took me over an hour to get the woman to realize a mistake was made AFTER she couldn't find my SSN in the child support system.  Come to find out that they put my drivers license number got mixed up with some deadbeat mother...yes a woman...with the same last name and first name as me.   Three hours after that, I'm walking out of red tape hell with a copy of the letter they faxed over to driver services, happy as a clam it's over...until I look down and find that they put the wrong SSN on the letter!!!  Brain dead doesn't even being to describe these folks!!  This could only happen to me!   Well, at least I didn't actually get a red light ticket!  >:( >:( >:( >:(

Obama, Spider-Man on the same comic-book page

By David Colton, USA TODAY
In a growing world of Barack Obama collectibles, one item soon may be swinging above the rest.

On Jan. 14, Marvel Comics is releasing a special issue of Amazing Spider-Man #583 with Obama depicted on the cover. Inside are five pages of the two teaming up and even a fist-bump between Spidey and the new president.

Other Comics / Comic Book Trivia Thread
« on: October 31, 2008, 11:04:20 am »
Anyone up for a thread devoted to comic trivia?  I swiped this idea from another board.  You ask a trivia question (related to comics, comic-related movies, Graphic Novels, etc.)  The next person answers and asks another question., etc, etc, etc.  Please, nothing WAAAY too obscure, so everyone can play....I'll go first....

What was the name of the Wakandan Secret Police?  (See...not too hard...not too easy)

Vox Populi / It's Official! Obama Is the Nominee
« on: August 27, 2008, 06:33:25 pm »
It was a forgone conclusion, but seeing this brought this black man to tears...and I'm not ashamed either!

(CNN) -- It was a moment Howard Hemsley thought might never come.
"If three years ago, someone had said to me on the streets of New York that somebody named Barack Obama would be our nominee, I would have said they were crazy," said Hemsley, an African-American delegate from New York. "I volunteered for him for two years, and most of that time I never thought he would win."

Latest Flicks / Don Cheadle Stars in Traitor
« on: August 27, 2008, 11:07:36 am »

Special Agent Roy Clayton of the FBI likes to play by the rules, but he's about to find out that between moral night and day is a murky, perilous twilight. When the CIA and the FBI begin to work together to unravel an international conspiracy, the spotlight falls on Samir Horn, an American Muslim and former soldier with apparent connections to any number of terrorist operations. Agent Clayton becomes consumed with discovering the truth about Horn -- is he a villain, an undercover hero, or something in between?

I've been seeing commercials for this flick for the past month or so and I'm really excited to see it!  Don Cheadle is an extraordinary actor and is greatly underrated (as we all know).  Is anyone else planning on catching this one?
