Black Panther / Author suggestions
« on: June 26, 2016, 05:14:17 pm »

Given the criticism so many of the past (and present) authors of Black Panther have received, I wondered who would HEFfas nominate to be the next writer on the title.

I steer towards folks like David Walker, Nalo Hopkinson, Balogun Ojetade, or Imani Perry. Maybe even Geoffrey Thorne would give the title a look...

Who would you nominate?

Feel The Funk / rethinking hip hop
« on: January 19, 2016, 09:42:38 am »

I used to teach that there was original and old school hip hop (around 1995). Now, I'm playing with the idea of generations in the genre:

1971-1983 Original School
1984-1993 Old School
1994-2004 1st generation
2005-present 2nd generation

Kendrick stands at the start of the 3rd generation for me, and I'm eager to see how the next decade develops.

However, I'm struggling to find artists like Reef, Stoupe, Technique, and Jean Grae to carry me forward. Any recommendations?

I'm also considering a category of Ancestors to include the major influences before 1971 (Ali, JB, Angela, Amiri, etc.).

Other suggestions for refinement?

Latest Flicks / First Obama Film
« on: January 19, 2016, 09:33:23 am »

SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU sounds promising, possibly engaging, but I'd much rather have a Marvel/DC style approach to have 15-20 feature films about the Obamas plus multimedia television and digital series ongoing over the next two decades.
