Black Panther / Wesley Snipes Appreciation Thread

John Singleton’s 1990s Black Panther Movie Pitch Was, Frankly, Terrible

Actor Wesley Snipes has revealed John Singleton’s idea for a Black Panther film in the 1990s, which sounds as if the acclaimed filmmaker may not have understood the Marvel Comics hero.

“I laid on [Singleton] my vision of the film being closer to what you see now: the whole world of Africa being a hidden, highly technically advanced society, cloaked by a force field, Vibranium,” Snipes recalled to The Hollywood Reporter. “John was like, ‘Nah! Hah! Hah! See, he’s got the spirit of the Black Panther, but he is trying to get his son to join the [civil rights activist] organization. And he and his son have a problem, and they have some strife because he is trying to be politically correct and his son wants to be a knucklehead.'”

“I am loosely paraphrasing our conversation,” the actor continued. “But ultimately, John wanted to take the character and put him in the civil rights movement. And I’m like, ‘Dude! Where’s the toys?! They are highly technically advanced, and it will be fantastic to see Africa in this light opposed to how Africa is typically portrayed.’ I wanted to see the glory and the beautiful Africa. The jewel Africa.”

“I love John, but I am so glad we didn’t go down that road,” Snipes continued, “because that would have been the wrong thing to do with such a rich project.”

Terminal objective:

Talk about how awesome Wesley Snipes is!

Alternative objective

Talk about that dummy John Singleton's idea!

Black Panther / Toon up! Animated Black Panther Discussion
« on: June 18, 2017, 06:34:58 am »
First and foremost, an acknowledgement:

This weekend there was a 1 hour Avengers Assemble cartoon in which Black Panther becomes the new leader of a new Avengers team!

26 episodes on deck of T'Challa doing T'Challa things (hopefully) while interacting with the greater M(C-lite)U!

So i figure how could we not appreciate this and all his other animated incarnations that came before?

Terminal Objective:
  • Appreciate  ;) and reminisce on your favorite animated moments.
  • Ongoing discussion for any past, current or future animated appearances

"Ta-Nehisi Coates has humanized him"  :)

"Ta-Nehisi Coates has made him more relatable"

I hear these white folks, lgbt bandwagoners and new blacks say this a lot.

Personally, I don't want my T'Challa humanized or relatable.  I want him to kick your favorite character's ass! (unless your favorite character is T'Challa) and have a bad female waiting for him back at the crib mansion.

But I am a simple man with simple desires.

Terminal Objective: Share your stance on the "humanizing" (or humbling) of T'Challa as a mechanism to make him more relatable/acceptable/appreciable to those of us who apparently want him to be our personal man-child black Peter Parker.

Questions to Consider:

  • Who asked for T'Challa to be "humanized"?  Were you asking for this?  >:(
  • Who gets to decide what human is?
  • T'Challa wasn't human in Hudlin's run?  If not, did you care?  How about Priest's?
  • Do you relate to Peter Parker?
  • If so, have you been dating model looking chicks since 16 like Peter Parker?  Major props if so.

Because maybe that's what she would've had if she was white.  ;) :P

Lois Lane being the world's greatest reporter.  Mary Jane Watson becoming a world famous model.  Recognized throughout all comics. That character protection when you're white and female... (but otherwise completely useless to your extremely popular main (white) character that you play the Eve to his Adam)... is epic!

But to her credit, Monica has never bleached her skin to try and get over.  This is just one of the many reasons that we appreciate her.

Terminal Objective:
Share your reasons why you appreciate Monica Lynn.

Optional Objective #1:

Share your ideas to improve upon her character

Optional Objective #2:

Share how you really feel about her.  (sweet baby bast be kind  :'()

Black Panther / "Can I be your Best Black Friend?"
« on: April 26, 2017, 09:58:16 pm »
Because "T'Challa and his Black Friends" is still my preferred title for the Crew.

Terminal Objective: If Black Panther were to get a Spider-Man/Deadpool-type buddy series (12 issues guaranteed) with an A-list creative team and a black male superhero of your choice to co-star with... give the pros and cons as to why your (best) black friend nominee would totally rock! (and suck!)

Optional Objective: Share what you would want their run to be about.

My nominee:

-Wesley Snipes baby!
-Can probably keep up with T'Challa in a race
-Guns and sword baby!
-Most underutilized / underrated black character that can draw 140 million in the box office back before being a superhero was cool
-All their strengths none of their weaknesses baby!
-He's kind of a dick but in a hilarious way (see: Hudlin's run)

-Nobody cares about vampires anymore, zombies are the rave
-He's been dead in the water creatively for, like, forever.. outside of his first 2 movies
-They gotta expand him to more than just vamps, like mystical ish
-Dante from Devil May Cry jacked his entire style and ran with it, with the mystical ish
-They want to retire him and have his out of wedlock child take over
-He is a bit of a dick (see: Hudlin's run)

Add on

or "50 Shades of Black (Panther)" :P

Terminal Objective: Make a case for why a marvel female of your choice would be a great love interest for T'Challa.  Then make a case for why she wouldn't be.

Optional Objective: Express your appreciation/unappreciation for the abundance of love interests T'Challa has had in his publication history.

I'll start it off:

Monica Rambeau

Pros: Down to earth, Louisiana (I think) black woman.  Super powerful.  Former Leader of the Avengers in the 80s (i think).  Had a short but cute flirtatious history with T'Challa.  MCU available :)  Can't claim she's a downgrade from Storm. ;)

Cons: T'Challa already has someone named Monica, could be confusing for him.  She's with Blue Marvel.  She's treated as the red headed step child of Captain Marvels.  She may be too powerful to be a regular (speed of light can be a bitch to plot around... gotta start reading Flash to see how they do it with Boomerang and Captain Cold ass villains).  Carol Danvers will need her as her token black friend in her MCU solo, can they share her?
