Latest Flicks / Fatherhood
« on: July 14, 2021, 08:31:29 pm »
We just watched the film "Fatherhood" ... and as I was watching I thought, "Wow, it is nice to see a film positively telling the story of a Black father who raised his daughter after the post-partum death of his wife" (contrary to the "absent Black father" negative racist stereotype). I also thought, "Yeah, Black women die more frequently than White women in hospitals" so its good that it touches on that.

At the end of the film, we were surprised that, during the credits, there were not pictures of the characters in real life, as one usually sees in these heart-warming movies "based on a true story." The story was so compelling that we wanted to read more about it and did a Google search ... and discovered the "real life" family was White.  So ... here is my question:

There has to be a compelling story of a real Black father who, alone after the death of his wife, raised his child or children alone. Has to be. So why did the writers and producers have to, essentially, put "blackface" on a White family's story? Just out of laziness, as it would have taken effort write a story from scratch telling the true story of an actual Black family?  Did anyone else find this offensive to Black people?

In an ideal world, skin color would be irrelevant to most acting roles, just as hair or eye color usually is. But we don't live in an ideal world. And here, the race of the characters was relevant in its dispelling vile racist stereotypes and touching on the issue of medical inequality in health care.

Did anyone else wish that this film "based on a true story" had been based on a REAL Black father?

Refusal to demolish, vague statement condemning "fascism" -

Another expression of white privilege, slightly different context. Similar deflection, rationalization, and (at best) obtuseness. 😠

When I read this on Facebook, it was like, yes. I hope white people reading it actually pause and allow the words to percolate:

Here is an example how white privilege sounds.

You keep saying, "It's horrible that an innocent black man was killed, but destroying property has to stop."

Try saying, "It's horrible that property is being destroyed, but the killing of innocent black men has to stop."

You're prioritizing the wrong part.

In The News / Free Rodney Reed

Rodney Reed, an innocent man, 21 years in prison, still on Death Row in Texas, was scheduled to be executed November 20th. It was stayed, with the possibility that the evidence will be reexamined.

This story is old news to most of you, one of so many, though the stay is good news. The outrageous facts of his case are described in www.freerodneyreed.com. The murder victim was likely killed by her fiance, a white police officer, jealous that she was also seeing Mr. Reed.

I participated in a gathering in support of him today in Grand Park DTLA, one of many many throughout the country. ✊

Latest Flicks / BLACKKKANSMAN
« on: February 06, 2019, 08:24:24 pm »
Amazing movie, with a powerful contempory montage at the end. When I saw the montage I uttered to myself, "Oh sh*t!" 😱

Saw it at the Museum of Tolerance. Q&A at the end with:

Kevin Willmott – Nominated for the Academy Award® for Best Adapted Screenplay, Blackkklansman

Terence Blanchard – Nominated for this year’s Academy Award® for Best Original Score, Blackkklansman.

The Q&A was great. Mr. Blanchard's answer to one question was sensitive and perfect. I'll paraphrase. An elderly Jewish woman asked, "The subject of the film is so painful. How could you stand doing it, emotionally."  He answered, "This is our life. It still is." He gave what he called "small examples." Moving back to Louisiana, when he and his white employee were at his house, a white telephone installer arrived and asked where the phone should be installed. Mr. Blanchard told him. The telephone company guy ignored Blanchard and turned to the white man and asked him. Repeatedly ignoring the black home owner, until the facts were made clear as to who the man in charge was. Similarly when a white man was on Mr. Blanchard's porch asking Blanchard to use his phone, some white utility guy came and asked the white man a question about "his" house. Yes, "little examples" - the perfect way to answer the audience woman's question. And of course such "little examples" take place everywhere, every day. And this didn't even touch on "big" examples that get media attention. That was the beauty of his answer.

The movie was great. While taking place in the 1970s, Mr. Willmott explained that Spike Lee did not want this to be a "period piece" even while having fun with the 1970s. Because it isn't about the past. It has totally contemporary resonances. The montage at the end hit that point home (as it was also conveyed throughout the film). They were working from an original script written by others. Making the film more relevant. Brilliant!

SPOILER ALERT - don't read further if you care about SPOILERS!!!:
I asked two questions - and the answers were:
1. The final call with David Duke was fictional. They were having some fun with that.
2. The Chief's burying the investigation at its conclusion was a local decision, not brought on federal or state pressure.

Also Mr. Willmott expained that the actual Klan target was a Gay bar, and the police stopped it long before anything happened. Also the "white officer" was not really Jewish. The female Black Student Union president was also fictional. And all that is fine, because in SUBSTANCE everything the film conveys is TRUE, composites of reality, even if various fictional elements were woven together to tell a compelling resonating story.

I liked the film a lot.

Wisdom ✨

Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts

Travel like a king
Listen to the inner voice
A higher wisdom is at work for you
Conquering the stumbling blocks come easier
When the conqueror is in tune with the infinite
Every ending is a new beginning
Life is an endless unfoldment
Change your mind, and you change your relation to time

You can find the answer
The solution lies within the problem
The answer is in every question
Dig it?
An attitude is all you need to rise and walk away
Inspire yourself
Your life is yours
It fits you like your skin

The oak sleeps in the acorn
The giant sequoia tree sleeps in its tiny seed
The bird waits in the egg
God waits for his unfoldment in man
Fly on, children
Play on

You gravitate to that which you secretly love most
You meet in life the exact reproduction of your own thoughts
There is no chance, coincidence or accident
In a world ruled by law and divine order
You rise as high as your dominant aspiration
You descend to the level of your lowest concept of your self
Free your mind and your ass will follow

The infinite intelligence within you knows the answers
Its nature is to respond to your thoughts
Be careful of the thought-seeds you plant in the garden of your mind
For seeds grow after their kind

Play on, children

Every thought felt as true
Or allowed to be accepted as true by your conscious mind
Takes roots in your subconscious
Blossoms sooner or later into an act
And bears its own fruit
Good thoughts bring forth good fruit
Bullsh*t thoughts rot your meat
Think right, and you can fly
The kingdom of heaven is within
Free your mind, and your ass will follow

Play on, children
Sing on, lady

You know, another cool thing is that the music, the style, is entering my soul. In the late-60s and '70s music for me was more Acid Rock, then Bowie and Glam and a little Heavy Metal (and The Who, Stones, etc.). Then starting in the late '70s and through the '80s I was working like a dog. So I missed all of this.

Going through the P-Funk albums one by one, at first I was drawn to the more familiar psychedelic, rock, blues themes, but now something is happening. I'm finding myself being broadly pulled into the Funk! 💥😍  Hahaha, this is beautiful! 💃

Reg, you're right about dance.

They say the two enveloping holy deeds a person performs with the whole body is dwelling in a sukkah during Sukkot (the Feast of Tabernacles) and immersing one's whole body in a mikvah (a purifying ritual bath - one example of which is baptism).

"They" are wrong.

There is another completely immersive Holy Act.
DANCE. 💃✨

[I'm at a concert right now. Being directed on a path here ... 💥 👍]

Just listened to Mr. Wiggles! Laughing and saying "Yes Yes Yes" at the same time. So ... TOTALLY THERE!  💃

... and then I hear:

"Livin' and jivin' and diggin' the skin he's in
Rumpofsteelskin"

Like, how important is THAT?!!!
WOW! 💥

Reginald, thank you so much for turning me onto George Clinton. I love it when this happens - when folks with a far broader background in music share their knowledge with me. You knowing my "backstory" regarding music, you can appreciate how exhilarating it is for me to experience "new" music (for me - even if everyone else on the planet knows it 😉) that totally resonates. Often it is the music itself, sometimes the lyrics, or both. High-energy.

My friend from Spain who is a part of the duo "L.A.Drones!" (fast, electroclash, very cool, sexy spacy DANCE music) has done the same ("Magazine" and "Kap Bambino" for example). Have become friends with members of "Sextile" too (post-punk, intense drums) and recently got into the music of "Kommunity FK" (after hearing them at a fundraising concert). There is so much music!

George Clinton blows my mind, though. 💫🔥

😔 This soooooo resonates:

Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time
For y'all have knocked her up
I have tasted the maggots in the mind of the universe
I was not offended
For I knew I had to rise above it all
Or drown in my own sh*t
