I want to thank Reggie for the very successful Launchparty last night. I had kind of lost touch with things around here and now I'm back in the loop. So that was the more personal part of last night's success.  If your dig comics SF TV or film there folks from all those arenas.  My Oh My! There were some super-fine women on hand (Rashida Jones Erika Alexander and Kamala Harris among others)

I might have some video from the spoken tribute for Dwayne Mc Duffie. I'll post that after I see what got captured, but more importantly I want announce the formation of "BangBabies".   Right now it's a Facebook group whose primary focus is monthly face2face meet-ups in the general Southern Calif area.  The name is a tribute to Dwayne's self-starter entrepeneurship.  It's for wannabee writers artists and others trying to breakrhough and get focused who just need camraderie and fraternity to swim together.  The membership is strictly "invite only", but all forum members are the perfect demographic (I'm not talking about race or any physical charcteristic, but an internal desire to create your own properties or just break into the business).  The emphasis is on real world activities. Things we can do together like enjoy a meal, go to premieres, cons or other events or just chat things.  I'll extend invites to established pros like Reggie et al to advise, but the focus is on what we do on our own.

Anybody interested in the group should hit me up on Facebook. I'm "Cm Talley" over there.  Just let me know you're from Reggie's forum.

Does she?  I thought she was walking away from the role.   ???

OK OK there's actually some story with Hal Jordan and Flash/Barry Allen*.  SPOILERS follow

at gravesites of Wayne's parents Aquaman, Sue Dibny and Martian Manhunter, on Mars, and shots of the guy who is the Black Lantern

It's peppered witn company adds for trades and concludes with 2 page spreads of the Green & Red Corps then single pages of Agent Orange, Sinestro & Blue Corps and the Star Sapphires, Indigo Tribe and Black Lanterns. LAst page is the BLACKEST NIGHT checklist.  Very effective marketing.  I wanted to dump this arc, but I gotta admit I'm hooked! :)

*   ??? I don't follow Flash,  but Barry Allen never died.  Jordan says he was was "just missing form the speed force".  Don't bother to explain.  I find DC books are best when they confuse the hell out of me.

Sonds like a plan.

I'm the middle of cramming for exams, so I'm gonna hide out at the 'plex next weekend.

I latched onto the FREE COMIC DAY BLACKEST NIGHT giveaway.  It literally has a scorecard on all the BN characters and groups.  Still the point remains, it cheapens the effect if arbitrary characters get obliterated in the same series they were introduced.

I am really sucked into the Blackest Night hype, but darned if I can figure out why.
The writing is ok, but I'm bugged  because there is nothing unique about Green Lanterns.
There are zilliions of alien races and they all have their own GL.
Now there are even more alien races and there are also Orange Blue Yellow Black power rings plus those Sapphire chicks.
The characters seem arbitrary and redundant and I can't find any motivation for keeping up except it's all very psychedelic.

Other Comics / Re: What do you like about DARK REIGN??

What I like most is I haven't spent Dime#1 on any books in this crossover series.
Admittedly, I got really tempted when I saw the revelatiion that Wolverine has a son.

Black Panther / Re: What If Storm Was Kidnapped?
« on: April 22, 2009, 06:40:40 pm »
Sorry, but Storm as a damsel-in-distress is weak.  Most of all I'm opposed to Wolverine appearing in a book I'm buying.

Yeah; don't pitch it with "Sex In The City" angle.  ;)

Jenn:  I missed your revamp of SINGLE LADIES into the Storm song. Brilliant.

Pfunkjazz: Vernon's YOHIMBE BROS. album sounds like superhero music to me.  He would be a great candidate.

Say the word and y'all will be yakkin at each other.

Ya oughta talk to Vernon Reid about composing something. We always talk about the stuff when Living Colour comes to LA.
He and singer Corey Glover are major comic book geeks.

Can you guys lead me to the trades that lead into the current storylines in both GREEN LANTERN and GREEN LANTERN CORPS?
Also, where to jump on for "Prelude to Blackest Night"? Stuff looks real psychedelic, but I wanna make sure I'm gettin' a "good read".

General Discussion / Re: who are we? where you at?
« on: April 11, 2009, 01:37:01 pm »
I'm Clyde Talley aka PFunkJAzz, I'm old; real old. Still, I've been reading comics off and on since Marvel debuted. I'm quite happy with my inner geek.  I was on the board when it first appeared, but went to lurker mode as it went through as number of changes and the BP series got caught in all those crossovers.the forum as time comes along. I hope everyone is well and having a great weekend.
Location: Bay Area

Vocation: Former Mainframe COBOL Programmer making the switch to CISCO Network Engineer (pun very definitely intended).  In the meantime, doing warehouse work to keep the bills paid. CCNA certification exam to be scheduled in late spring, then I go from there. I own some real estate, so I'm a bit of a slumlord, but I insist tenants call me "The Man" cuz I'm keeping them down.   ;D

Education: BA form UC Davis back in 79 in History.  Learned all the COBOL JC CICS VSAM stuff throug the Urban League in Los Angeles andI worked in the field for more than 20 yrs but the post Y2K technology shift left me in tarpits with the dinosaurs.  ;D Currently enrolled at commuity college for CISCO Networking Parts ! - IV.

Long Term Goals: Staying out of jail.  ;D

Short Term Goals: Stay out of jail. 8)

Biggest Regret: Turned down a job with City of LA cuz Iwas making 3x that as a contractor.  I'd give my right leg for that "cut" in pay.

Biggest Regret (Now): Trying to get a  bailout.

Likes: Comics - Right now I'm only collecting the Dark Horse adaptations of Robert E Howard's Conan, Kull and Solomon Kane.  I'm pursuing story arcs in Black Panther, Captain America and maybe Daredevil and Hellboy in TPB.  I have no real interest in mainstrean superhero series, but I wll dig into a lead or new character or guest star who is non-white.  Ultimately, if a writer is hot I try to join in for the sizzle.

Movies: I'll see any comics/SF/fantasy on the opening weekend. If it's "big news" I try to go IMAX

Music: I dig jazz funk reggae rock and blues, but have no real interest in hip-hop. My real big interest is black rock bands like Living Colour King's X, Fishbone Ben Harper and of course Parliament-Funkadelic. i go to many shows and concerts in the LA and Orange County areas

Location:  So Calif in the LA/OC area, but based in the Inland Empire.

Dislikes: Smooth jazz, vocoder/autotune key-tar, keyboard bass, fake horn arrangements and e-drums.
