I arrived late at the cinema so I missed the start of the movie, where Devastator appeared. I was disappointed that I didn’t see that character, because it was one of my favourite Decepticons outside of the original cartoon series version of Soundwave, Ravage, Starscream and Laserbeak.
The story was straightforward. There was a hidden machine that harvested energy from the sun, and the Decepticons wanted it. Sam had the map to the key, which activated the machine. So we had a basic chase movie.
The action and special effects were good. A particular fight scene had Optimus against three Decepticons and Prime really thrashed his opponents for a while. It reminded me of the original cartoon movie when Optimus rampaged through all the Decepticons that were in his path.
Overall the movie entertained. I liked the ‘Species movie’ nod where a female Decepticon disguised as a teenager had her elongated tongue all over the place.
But I think they got too carried away with the low jokes. And I found it odd that Megatron would be subservient to anyone.
