Sports Talk / Re: 2017 NBA Playoffs
« on: May 15, 2017, 02:43:35 pm »

Golden State's bench got a lot weaker. This year, though, they were smarter about resting to be ready for the Finals.

The big change to me is how much better the Cavs' bench is this year. The Warriors need a lot of mental toughness to make sure they keep the Cavs for staying close into the fourth quarter.

They can do it.

I can't say I would be happy to see it, though.

Everybody's looking at GSW total sweep, but this Cavs team looks a lot like the first GSW team (2015 champs). Without Kawhi, the Spurs will struggle in WCF, but I thought they might beat GSW if Pop had everyone available.

GSW works well for a regular season run, but I'm cautious of relying on KD to beat Lebron in a Finals series.

If all four Oakland All-Stars are hot, then they'll win - it is just mathematics. 3>2.

However, if CLE defends like they did in 2016, with even more bench strength, CLE could take a second consecutive title in historic fashion.

Certainly not in public.

Until we organize educators, activists, and small business owners to seize control of state and local government, the fringe will remain in power and oligarchs will abuse the public trust.

Started into Secret Empire. Weak framing, but Cap as master villain is long overdue. It is still trite because they're trying to invert the roles he and Tony shared over the last twenty years.

The semiotic importance reveals the growing insecurities we have about nationalism outpacing the cultural anxieties about technology.

General Discussion / Re: Dave Chappelle Is an American Folk Hero

Has consumerism eroded American 'folk' culture since 1980? Or has the 'folk' become the perception of 'middle class'?

The core idea of bringing Wakandans to the front of the BP story under Coates is interesting, but he doesn't value the conventions that made previous versions of T'Challa compelling. That misunderstanding may reflect some of his commitments to Afropessimism, but it has alienated many readers and will sabotage the long-term engagement with Panther leading up to the movie in 2018.

Very successful weekend where we changed some fundamental narratives about history and economics. Hope I can bring some of you to Cleveland next year to build on the progress.

Nope! Just guessing!!  :D

I ripped Priest's writing in 2000 for not giving T'Challa decisive victories (and went further with criticism that impacted how he handled Rhodey in "The Crew"), especially after his comments about black audiences in "The Client" tpb.

It is striking to hear those notes echoed about Coates' first arc. I think I'm going to reserve judgment until issue 5 or 6.

What did Priest say about black audiences?

Thanks for giving me an excuse to pull the TPB off the shelf. :-)

"That's my pet peeve with a lot of black film and black comedians: it's all White People Bashing, fueled by *our race's legacy of anger and resentment by centuries-old unreparative wrongs.  But this hostility polarizes rather than unites. There is no healing in it and it limits our opportunities." (Christopher Priest, June 2001)

I can see his perspective. Obama has said many similar sentences. However, I will always be opposed to reducing the "legacy" of black people to "anger and resentment," especially when writing to a mostly white audience.

Black Panther / Re: Black Panther #3 SPOILERS and Discussion...
« on: July 01, 2016, 04:38:41 pm »

hm. In "The Client," he took his staff to Brooklyn to investigate the death of a child, while all of Wakanda struggled with a border war (and Achebe effectively seized control of the capitol).  By issue 3, he was still running around Mephisto's maze -- arguably foolish, even imbecilic, to an unfamiliar audience.

If T'Challa beat the FF, how does he struggle against Grodd? Didn't Luthor beat Grodd 1on1, h2h? ;-p

Grodd is inconsistently written like BP.  You could point to times that someone much less formidable than Grodd challenged T'Challa.

But of course T'Challa will win; the question is, would it be a good fight?

If Grodd put together a decent scheme, he could challenge T'Challa for an issue or two. But I see him on the scale of the Wizard as an overall challenge to BP.
