If t'challa loses there, I don't hate it.

he was winning (in my mind) and the Phoenix intervened.

But I really doubt theyshow the end of the fight int he previews

Coogler, mr "black panther so important to young black men" being the one against recasting would be absolutely shocking and devastating to me

This forum really brought it home to me what replacing and not recasting T'Challa could mean for the comics, which I hadn't thought about. That is a definite concern.

MCU gave T'challa plot protection. He is the only black male hero that is beholden to no other character. They coudln't kill him off... it would look horrible. He just got popular in the main stream and it was the perfect time to keep him in the comics.

Without the MCU... why keep him around really? Why put effort into his comics? I think the comics will wait until they get wind of the plan in the MCU (is shuri taking the mantle or not?) and they will adjust accordingly.

And when they adjust, I don't see T'challa staying around. Black Panther by Vita Ayala just sounds like somethign marvel will do.

T'challa as his MCU peak still coudln't get pushed in video games. While Carol was showing up in commercials, T'challa was a DLC. AT HIS BILLION DOLLAR PEAK!

Why focus on him at all if they can just reskin to Shuri and move on?

Minorities always have to do "more" to get the same respect and T'challa's "more" wasn't long enough to make a dent into anything.

They made Wakanda and his supporting cast as big if not BIGGER than the lead character.

To be fair, i've posted on BP forums for years and a lot of the "BP" fans are really Wakanda fans. They care more about Wakanda than T'challa.

It sucks to say, but chadwick himself bears some of this blame due to not telling anyone what was going on. If Disney could have gotten ahead of this and Chadwick himself came and a blessed the cahracter moving on, we wouldn' tbe having thsi conversation. bu I guess he really really really really thought he was going to beat the cancer.

Situations sucks all around. I expected BP to suck in the comics by now, but to have him gone from the MCU in a flash is crushing to my fandom. Feels like it isn't even worth it anymore

Very curious to see if BP goes on a mini hiatus until empyre is done, leading to the new writer and status quo

maybe ayo, aneka, and chang can die defending waknda in empyire....

Coates damage can easily be retconned. Marvel must realize by now that getting literary based and agenda laced writers (particularly agendas that are incompatible with the mythos) are not necessary. Marvel must also be aware that Geoff Thorne can handle the BP. Bring him on as a writer and/or editor.

He said on CBR that he hasn't been contacted and that Marvel likely already has someone lined up if they are announcing Coates is leaving

I mean, how popular is hulk though? Honest question.

In january

rank 23, sold 46,800 units, despite being in issue #29

only Marvel solo characters outselling it are Venom and Spider-Man

Before Ewing took over, it was selling in the 20K region, with all the same renumbering gimmicks BP was doing.

And it is critically acclaimed. He revitalized the character.

And yes, I would 100% take redjack but he doens't seem to be in the running.

I guess I should of clarified. You said Marvel wouldn't waste na big writer on BP so.i was asking how popular is hulk that would warrant a big writer for him but not T'Challa?

I personally think the heirachy of "give a sh*t" for Marvel is something like...

Tier 1: Spider-Man

Tier 2: Avengers, main X-men titles (now that they have the rights back), Wolverine, Thor

Tier 3: Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, Venom, secondary X team titles, F4 (since they have the rights back)

Tier 4: Daredevil, Deadpool. Dr Strange, Carol, Miles, Punisher, GoG

Tier 5: whatever legacy characters, villains, movie characters they are pushing that year

Tier 6: A turd sandwich

Tier 7: Black Panther

I've said it before but, I'll say it again.

Any book claiming to be Agents of Wakanda that has close to ZERO actual Wakandans in it, is not worth the paper it's printed on.

The reason why this book was even looked at favourably by some BP enthusiasts was rue to being starved of seeing T'Challa given any emphasis or agency within his own solo.

Agents of Wakanda was always a sub par and utterly aimless exercise in stupidity.

Just not as stupid as Coates BP solo in name only.

It's just f*cking boring lol.

"hey im fat cobra. im fat. here is a hungry joke"

"hey im kazar. im like tarzan. here is a savage tarzan joke"

"hey guys were are missfits and funny characters hehe"

YAWN. that sh*t works for two issues then gets boring fast.

Bro, frak all these wack writers.

None of them have the right pedigree to course correct post Coates hot garbage take on the BP mythos.

Al Ewing could do to BP what he did with Hulk.

I don't trust Marvel at all though. They ain't gonna "waste" a big writer on BP.

Whole franchise needs a cleansing fire.

If Rise of the Black Panther was a "year one" Black Panther book, then have Evan come back and right a "year two" book and start over lol

So much momentum from the movie straight up squandered.

God no to Nnedi. It would just be more of the same Coates crap. Her series with T'challa in it were no better than Coates.

Honestly, I would be scared to death of any black female writing T'challa at this point. It seems like there is too much temptation with Shuri, Okoye, Aneka, Ayo, Storm, and Ramonda around to sideline the main character to promote black female power.

that may be "wrong" to think that and it likely can't get any worse than what Coates has done for 4 years, but I've been burned too much at this point.

I'd die if it was Ahmed

Coates run gets more and more irrelevant

Challenge day in the Comics is basically a royal rumble. Seems anyone can challenge on that day.

Then their are also tribal challenges, which are direct challenges to the Black Panther in a 1v1 fight. Very inconsistent who can do this but so far it really seems like "anyone." We've seen outsiders like Mbaku and Killmonger famously challenge but we've also seen some random dude named G challenge Shuri. The BP just has to accept.

http://blackpanthermarvel.blogspot.com/2016/12/panther-powers-part-3-annual-tournament.html

Movie is royal blood (hence Shuri jokingly saying she would challenge and of course Killmonger) or a representative from one of the tribes can challenge.

What is interesting in the movie and not 100% clear is what happens when the King ages out of the Black Panther role. The Challenge Day scenario seems to be only a coronation for the King. It is only to become King. So it only happens when the King gives up the throne.

But we obviously know T'challa was Black Panther toward the end of T'chaka's rule before T'chaka's death. And we saw on challenge day that not all the leaders of the tribes were the ones fighting. The River tribes leader was the Lip Plate dude... yet Nakia was the warrior for example. However, M'baku was both the warrior and the leader of the Jabari.

So if say... Nakia faught and beat T'challa... is Lip Plate dude the king? While Nakia is black panther? That is unclear.

And how does the king choose the next black panther when he ages out? Is there a separate tournament? Is it just his choice? It would be cool if there was a separate thing similar to the rite of ascension or something.

One of my little issues with Black Panther, the comics more than the films, is that it hasn't spent much time exploring how its government works

Agreed. Unfortunately, you would need a true comic writer who wanted to keep things unique and fantasy like about Wakanda to do it. Like Kirby who invented challenge day, Don who added fantasy elements to the HSH ceremony, Gillis who added various tests to the king, and Priest who added political stuff like the Doras and such.

But... when it ends up being someone like Coates, all you get is, "lol this is so stupid lets make it like real life" where the King just says he sucks over and over and institutes a consitituional monarch... why functions the same as the tribal council and they move on, making the whoel first arc a big waste of time and only serving to ground something that  doesn't need grounded.

I would love for a comic guy like Ewing, who loves his deep canon connections, to re-vamp and explore the Wakandan government. Or someone with a big Sci-Fi love like Geoffrey Thorne do it. I just can't be a dude who wants to make it real life.
