Easy one.
Burn all the books!

I'll go with Magic, here. A world without books, while tragic, would not be as bad as a world where you are the only person.

I agree with Magic and Lion. Folks can always make up stories and share them with others verbally. I'll leave the world of books and no people to Burgess Meredith and the Twilight Zone.

Let's flip it a little.

Put it in a prison context.

How about solitary confinement with reading material...or general population with no reading?

Much as people tend to piss me off, I can always make up stories. I can't make more people, at least not without another one.

Human contact or a book? Depends on which human.
I can always put the book down.   ;)

...I presume that "no human contact" means absolutely no s*x at all..  :-\ heh.. a dealbreaker for 99% of the population for sure.. but especially in prison, I'll be glad to have zero 'human contact' at all..  :P  Remember : http://tinyurl.com/8cq8ane

This is an interesting question and then the twist was put on it. Solitary Confinement with books or General population with out (books). Okay here's my stab at it. First of all a prison general population without books is like a Roman Coliseum with Rogue lions and gladiators ready to kill other while the guards and the rest are betting who on who would kill whom other first.
The prison population would dwindle because, well people would be dying from unnatural causes. I am not saying books prevent this in a prison atomsphere but it keeps the natives happy at times.

So my answer for this particular scenario is to have books in solitary confinement as opposed to no books and human contact. You do notice I am in third person here. Because I would not wish either situation on myself or anyone else ;D
