The department has a long tradition of excellence of scholarship in the fields of African history, the Atlantic world, African-American studies, and the economics of slavery. We are building on that tradition as we develop our programs in the direction of global history. The department also has a close relationship with the university’s Frederick Douglass Institute for African and African-American Studies, a center that sponsors graduate and undergraduate scholarship, and pre- and post-doctoral fellowships.
