BLACK PANTHER' MOVIE COULD UNITE THE COUNTRY, SAYS STAR LUPITA NYONG'O
BY JANICE WILLIAMS ON 12/20/17

The Charlottesville riots and domestic terrorist attacks have amplified arguments about gun control and racism in 2017, and the divide between Americans seems to deepen daily, with every corner of pop culture touched by current events. Yes, even superhero movies.

Traditionally, the genre has provided a way for diverse strangers to come together to root for a good guy. Because a superhero is fighting an evil that is outside of our daily experience, or a villain who is against all of humanity (rather than, say, a president who some hate and some love), we can, for at least two hours, unite in a shared goal.

“The beauty of cinema is you all go into a room together and agree to suspend your disbelief and share this experience of another world," Lupita Nyong’o, who stars in Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther movie, said during an interview with Teen Vogue Tuesday. "For that moment, you are all one in that space, experiencing the same thing. It reinforces our sense of community. These big blockbuster superhero films appearing in moments when we’re so polarized are some of the few chances we all get to be on the same page.”

Black Panther will be the first superhero movie featuring a predominately black cast. It is based on the character introduced by Marvel in 1966, the first black superhero in mainstream American comics. The film follows the Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), known as T’Challa, as he leads the fictional African country of Wakanda during national security threats and an impending uprising sparked by his nemesis Erik Killmonger.

Nyong’o plays one of Wakanda’s expert assassins, Nakia, who is also T’Challa's love interest. The actress equates superhero movies with what used to unite peple in the past. "It's modern folklore," she said, "and folklore is important. It informs our sense of oneness."

Nyong'o, 34, was raised in Kenya, and made her feature film debut in the 2013 film 12 Years a Slave, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Suporting Actress. Prior to that, she wrote, produced and directed the 2009 documentary In My Genes, about discrimination against albino Kenyans. She has also done work with mutliple organizations protecting endangered animals. More recently, she wrote a New York Times op-ed about being sexually harassed by Harvey Weinstein in 2011; she vowed to work with just female directors or feminist male directors after that experience.

It makes sense, then, that Nyong'o would choose Black Panther—with its "social and political relevance"—for her superhero movie debut. It also helped that the director, Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed), wanted her to play an independent, powerful and patriotic woman. (Nyong'o's influential Kenyan family includes sister Isis, recently named by Forbes magazine as one of Africa's most powerful young women.)

“In our story, there are so many different women holding their own space," Nyong'o said. "Women may be in competition with each other, sure, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there’s an absence of love or respect. You see [the female Wakanda warriors] work together, and you see a dynamic that is really encouraging. Making this film awakened me.”

Black Panther will get a new anthem from Kendrick Lamar
He’s got loyalty and royalty inside his DNA
By Julia Alexander

It makes sense that Kendrick Lamar is recording a new, original track for Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther movie. He does, after all, also have royalty inside his DNA.

Lamar teased his work on Black Panther, the 2018 Marvel movie directed by Fruitvale Station and Creed’s Ryan Coogler, in a new music video for “LOVE,” above. It’s a quick snippet found smack-dab in the middle of the video; if you don’t want to watch the entire video, we clipped the scene, which can be viewed in the GIF below.

https://giphy.com/gifs/3oFzm8qAXyt3v7jRRu?utm_source=iframe&utm_medium=embed&utm_campaign=Embeds&utm_term=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.polygon.com%2F2017%2F12%2F22%2F16810178%2Fblack-panther-kendrick-lamar-marvel

Black Panther’s connection to Lamar’s work goes beyond the artist’s commercial and critical success. Both Coogler and actor Chadwick Boseman (who plays Black Panther in the film) said they felt a personal attachment to “DNA,” leading to its appearance in the trailer.

“The lyrics are amazing — a lot of Kendrick's are," Coogler told the Los Angeles Times in July. "It's actually oddly literal for our trailer's purposes — and I think a lot of the cultural things we're dealing with in Wakanda are in the zeitgeist in the African American community.”

Much like how Lamar’s “DNA” is about rising up and standing proud in an oppressive society, Black Panther will examine how a kingdom could have progressed into greatness if it hadn’t been conquered.

“You're talking about a world that would exist if the Egyptians were never conquered, if Sumeria was never conquered and was allowed to progress — that's what Wakanda is,” Boseman told the Times.

We haven’t received any hints as to what Lamar’s new song for Black Panther will sound like, but considering the music he’s known for and the theme of Black Panther, it’s not too far of a stretch to expect another generational anthem.

Black Panther will be released on Feb. 16, 2018.

https://www.comicbookmovie.com/black_panther/box-office-early-estimates-point-to-black-panther-beating-justice-leagues-opening-weekend-a156530

Currently tracking 90+ opening weekend

Early tracking for Wonder Woman was 65 million dollar opening weekend.  That was in early May, 1 month before the June release date.  She grossed 100 milly.

Deadpool's early tracking in Jan, one month before the Feb release, put Wade at 55-60 million.  Wade did 135 milly.

So this 2 month forecast at 90 million for Black Panther.,,  may be a modest estimation.  The social media buzz and full marketing campaign didn't hit Diana until 2 weeks before her flick.  Once Disney is done with Star Wars and late January rolls around, there will be fireworks

I think it'll be 3 factors: heavy marketing by Marvel (which is already a given), the uniqueness of it (already a given) and strong positive reviews (which while tbd, early indications seem promising).

On the more modest end of the spectrum, SM:Homecoming and Thor 3 each had early trackings for 100mil each; SM:HC did 117mil while Thor 3 did 126mil.  But mind you, this was the 3rd Thor movie and the 6th Spider-Man solo.

For Black Panther, I think 115-135 million is pretty realistic.  Anything over 140 mil is just some ugodly level of stars aligning.  Really, as long as it clears 100 mil, I'm gon let the world know about it, forever.

All those movies mentioned were critically loved. Thats a huge factor to improving projections

JL was projecting 115 issue and only opened at 93

Hype factor is there. No competition in feb.

Movie just has to be good.

Well think of it's this way. Stars aligned in such a way that Tchalla got a bigger role in CW then originally because the deal with Sony was up and down, and as such.
He got only 15 Min of screen time no but stole the spotlight in ever scene he was in and made such a huge impact on folks that they hype was intense from CW alone. Add to the hype from the teaser, it's the latter movie before IW and he has a big role in that so people are going to want to know how capable Wakanda is going into IW plus whatever scene at the end or if they have the soul stone etc. It's going to lead to a big opening weekend.

Stars have aligned for Tchalla in recent years. The only Hickman up is Coates at the moment but on mcu side it's been alignment after alignment. I think we can get one more
