Twenty years ago, LL could have made a pretty good Luke Cage.

what about now?  ;)

Thinking outside the Cage:  Some other options, based on "traditional" racial histories of Marvel characters and his relative age (45), minus characters common to X-Men, Spider-Man or Fantastic Four--
Heroes:
Adam the Blue Marvel- (I'll enjoy the web breakage if it's this)
Lieutenant Marcus Stone- no powers, leads the "Code: BLUE" S.W.A.T. team of New York City cops against super-human crises.
Triathlon/3-D Man: Initially 3 times as fast/strong/agile as a top athlete; later gains "true sight" revelatory vision powers.
(Black) Goliath- Bill Foster grows 15-feet tall. Certain anatomic stereotypes emboldened.
Gauntlet- the drill sergeant of Avengers Academy during the Registration Act days.
Dr. Voodoo- Depends on how bizarre LL looks wearing a wig...
Blade- oooh.. he was linked to it in the 90s, of course..

villains-
Thunderball- Eliot Franklin- swings a wrecking ball, PhD. in physics. nonetheless, figures crime pays better than academia and takes orders from high school dropout Wrecker.
Erik Killmonger- N'Jadaka the renegade, dreaded (and dreadlocked) Wakandan, frequently comes back from mysterious deaths.
Moses Magnum- initially African arms dealer/warlord, eventually given shockwave powers (but receding hairline left intact) by Apocalypse.
M'Baku the Man Ape-- leader of the Jabari White Gorilla cult of Wakanda.  Relentless disrespect ensues.

supporting:
Derek Freeman- FBI agent, occasional liaison to Avengers
Derek Khanata- Wakandan liaison to SHIELD, interacts with Agents of Atlas.

L.L. is too old to be anybody's Luke Cage. If anything he could play Cage's father.

Iron Man isn't Luke Cage and I don't see the current L.L. in the role. Young, angry, "I'm Bad" L.L. maybe, but now he's too ensconced in the mainstream to do the part justice.

Luke Cage is a young Black man's power fantasy, he's a Blaxploitation hero in comic book form.  This is a new generation, he needs to be played by an actor that speaks to them and not us.

True story, I was visiting my mom Saturday while she was watching C.S.I. and she said "I like him, he's a nice young man". I said I used to like him when he was a rapper, she said "he was a rapper?" end of story.

That's a good thing, Trip!  :)

That's an indicator there is a segment of folks that won't see him as a stage performer. That group view him as a legitimate movie & television actor.
