My kids for years have made fun of me for calling flip-flops "zories" (pronounced "zore-ease").  As in, "Where are my zories?!!""Who stole my zorieees?!!"

Here is the explanation:

The modern flip-flop descends from the Japanese zōri, which became popular after World War II when soldiers returning to the United States brought them back.

"Thumps," like "flip-flops," is pretty descriptive of the sound they make. 😊
