Thriller or Off the Wall?
« on: March 30, 2016, 05:30:55 pm »
A few debates on the internet; bringing it to the HEFaz to address.

Which would you choose, and why?

Pretty easy choice for me: Off The Wall all day, every day.

I'd have to go with Off The Wall but Thriller had better ballads imo. If you could combine the best 5 tracks from each album it would be an untouchable classic.

Off The Wall had better vocals, more of a jam session had been made of the inspired music and better lyrics.  Thriller has super star quality production and revolutionized the video world.

I'd have to go with Off The Wall but Thriller had better ballads imo. If you could combine the best 5 tracks from each album it would be an untouchable classic.
Here's the song list for Off The Wall:
  • "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough"
  • "Rock with You"
  • "Working Day and Night"
  • "Get on the Floor"
  • "Off the Wall"
  • "Girlfriend"
  • "She's Out of My Life"
  • "I Can't Help It"
  • "It's the Falling in Love"
  • "Burn This Disco Out"
And for Thriller:
  • "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'"
  • "Baby Be Mine"
  • "The Girl Is Mine" (with Paul McCartney)
  • "Thriller"
  • "Beat It"
  • "Billie Jean"
  • "Human Nature"
  • "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)"
  • "The Lady in My Life"
If I were to pick my top 10 songs from these two albums, 6 or 7 of them would be from Off The Wall. The ballads from Thriller are great but "I Can't Help It" is just as good if not better. For me, I just don't like the megahits from Thriller that much -- "Billie Jean", "Beat It", and "Thriller". None of them make my top 10.

Off the Wall wins because of that Paul McCartney song alone. Ye gods, that was terrible.

This is irrefutable. McCartney had a sub-genre of execrable duets with R&B legends. See "Ebony and Ivory". I got no use for "Say Say Say" either while we're at it.

"The Lady in My Life" trumps all!  Thriller for the win!

Yep,gotta agree  Lady In My Life is Michael's best ballad ever. All the ballads that followed on Bad, Dangerous, History, Invincible weren't up yo par imo.
