King In Black: Black Panther Gives T'Challa a Wakandan Upgrade (Exclusive)

As the King in Black invades the Marvel Universe, it was only a matter of time before Knull set his sights on Black Panther's nation of Wakanda. An upcoming February 2021 one-shot titled King in Black: Black Panther will examine how T'Challa balances his duties leading the Avengers against protecting his people against the god of symbiotes, all while utilizing some advanced Wakandan weapons.

CBR has an exclusive look at Leinil Francis Yu's cover of King in Black: Black Panther #1 by writer Geoffrey Thorne and artist Germán Peralta, which features Black Panther soaring through the air with a piece of Wakandan flying apparatus strapped to his back. T'Challa is joined by Shuri and Okoye as they prepare to battle an army of symbiote demons attacking from the ground and air.

Marvel has scheduled the next issue for Feb. 2021, eleven months after the previous release.

Marvel Entertainment has finally added the Black Panther comic book series back to its schedule, with the next issue officially announced for February 2021 — 11 months after the ostensibly monthly series’ last issue.

Black Panther No. 23, by Ta-Nehisi Coates and Daniel Acuña, with Ryan Bodenheim assisting on art duties, will not only continue the writer’s ongoing “Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda” storyline, it will mark the beginning of the end for Coates as series writer, a position he’s held since relaunching the comic book in 2016 alongside artist Brian Stelfreeze.

The series, which launched its current run in 2018, had been absent from Marvel’s schedules since March this year, when the publisher’s entire comic book line was suspended for COVID-related reasons. While Marvel’s comic book publishing was all-but-restored by summer, a number of titles remained in limbo, with Black Panther — one of Marvel’s most critically acclaimed titles — arguably the most high-profile.

“We’re so excited to bring Black Panther back to the stands, and we thank all our readers for their patience,” series editor Wil Moss said in a statement provided by the publisher. “I promise, these last three issues will be worth the wait -- Ta-Nehisi and Daniel have been building to this finale for over two years now, and the ensuing battle between the forces of T’Challa’s Wakanda and Emperor N’Jadaka’s Intergalactic Empire is going to knock your socks off! Just wait’ll you see who shows up to help defend Wakanda…”

Black Panther No. 23 will be available digitally and in comic book stores Feb. 2021.



Ta-Nehisi Coates' Final Black Panther Issues Kick Off in February

Marvel has revealed the return date for Ta-Nehisi Coates' Black Panther, along with the Daniel Acuña cover and Julian Totino Tedesco variant.

Ta-Nehisi Coates' space-based run on Black Panther is finally returning this February, beginning the end of the author's Wakandan saga.

Marvel announced today that Black Panther #23 will arrive in February 2021, continuing the cosmic quest of T'Challa and his allies as they journey from the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda to the Earth-based version of the powerful nation. Both Daniel Acuña and Ryan Bodenheim return as artists for the issue, and the cover by Acuña has been revealed, along with a variant from Julian Totino Tedesco. Check them out.

Coates began his run on Black Panther in 2016, making the jump from essays and novels to comic books. His lengthy run has been a hit with fans and critics alike, inspiring numerous spinoffs and even elements of T'Challa's MCU solo film. All told, Coates has made a major impact on the world of Wakanda across all of Marvel Entertainment,

In 2018, the title was relaunched with Coates taking the king to space, minus his memories. What's unfolded is a mysterious tale of rebellion and intrigue with familiar faces returning in new roles. Now, Black Panther and his team have returned to Earth, but the upcoming issue promises that the powerful Empire isn't far behind them.

Back in March, it was revealed that Coates would be ending his four-year run on the title with issue #25. But the COVID-19 pandemic brought comic book publishing to a halt for most of the year, meaning the final issues of Coates' time on the series will now arrive early next year.

Along with the news of the king's return to shelves, Marvel also revealed their previews for this week's comics. Among the titles arriving is Captain America #25, also written by Coates.

Black Panther Return Delayed Again!

Those waiting for the resumption of Marvel's Black Panther ongoing series will have to wait a few more weeks - but as fans of the Ta-Nehisi Coates series can tell you, they're a bit used to it. The next issue, Black Panther #23, has been rescheduled for a February 24 release. That's three weeks later than the last time it was rescheduled, and 11 months since the last issue.

"The Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda turned their legendary king into a slave. Now the king is restored — and after years of effort, the gates of the empire will swing wide open as the Black Panther makes one final attempt to free the ranks of the Nameless across the five galaxies," reads Marvel's solicitation for Black Panther #23.

Black Panther #23 was originally scheduled to go on sale April 22, 2020, but it - like all of Marvel's titles - was placed on hiatus following the onset of the comics distribution disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. While a majority of Marvel's titles resumed circulation by July 2020, Coates' Black Panther was among the most notable absences. It wasn't until November that Marvel gave an update on the book, saying Black Panther would resume February 3, 2021 with #23.

With this week's schedule change, Black Panther #23 will go on sale on February 24, with Black Panther #24 to follow two weeks later on March 3 - both drawn by Daniel Acuna. "The Intergalactic Empire has suffered thousands of losses — and still they're coming for Earth," reads the solicitation for Black Panther #24. "Wakanda Prime is in more danger than ever as Emperor N'Jadaka — A.K.A. the resurrected Killmonger, one of the Black Panther's deadliest enemies — returns to face the king who unintentionally brought him to power."

Marvel has announced that Coates' run will end with Black Panther #25. That finale has not been scheduled, however, a collection of this finale arc, as Black Panther Book 9: The Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda Part 4, is scheduled for June 15.
