Avengers: Black Panther and Marvel's Batman Analog Are About Go to War With Mephisto (EXCLUSIVE)
BY LIAM NOLAN

Marvel Comics presents an exclusive preview of Avengers #55, by Jason Aaron and Javier Garron.

Marvel Comics provided CBR with an exclusive preview of Avengers #55, by writer Jason Aaron, artist Javier Garron, colorist David Curiel and letterer VC's Cory Petit. In the preview, T'Challa/Black Panther and Kyle Richmond/Nighthawk seemingly decide to go to war against Mephisto.

In our exclusive preview for Avengers #55, Earth's Mightiest Heroes are still reeling from the Multiversal Masters of Evil's attack on their headquarters. At the start of the preview, Nighthawk is driving through the Nevada desert and trying to process just how much of his life was a lie after learning about his origins. Black Panther comes and confronts Nighthawk, asking him just how long he thinks he can continue being a vigilante.

While they initially argue, Black Panther eventually shifts to conversation to something they can agree on: Stopping Mephisto, who manipulated Nighthawk and has been a major for of the Avengers during the current run. At first, Nighthawk rejects the possibility of teaming up with Black Panther, T'Challa insists, and gives Richmond all of the data he has on Mephisto's activities.

The Richmond version of Nighthawk was created by Roy Thomas and Sal Buscema in 1969's Avengers #69. Nighthawk is generally considered the Marvel Universe's take on Batman and possesses many of the same abilities. Nighthawk has been an important member of such teams as the Defenders and Squadron Supreme of America. The current version of the character was a simulacrum created by Mephisto.

You can read CBR's exclusive preview of Avengers #55 below alongside the solicitation information for the issue.

Avengers' Black Panther is so boss that he casually mentions the rudimentary and mundane events occurring in his ongoing solo while conspiring to thwart Mephisto. Imagine this T'Challa confronting Wakanda's democratic party and quelling the looming insurrection.

Tchalla is officially out of the Avengers. Nighthawk joins the team.

Nighthawk needs more shine, but not at T'Challa's expense.

I picked up this issue because of this thread to be honest. And it didn't hurt that I just recently read through all the Heroes Reborn stories so my interest was piqued as well. I don't see from this Avengers issue Nighthawk getting shine at T'Challa's expense. From Ridley's run from jump there was a testy relationship between T'Challa and the other Avengers, so I can see T'Challa taking care of more important matters in Wakanda than also trying to do that and chair the Avengers.

It's not like they kicked T'Challa out and put Nighthawk in his place, or Nighthawk undermined him, or even insulted T'Challa here. As for Nighthawk, I still love the Supreme Power makeover (especially that sleek black suit), but I like how Aaron is writing this character more than David F. Walker or even JMS. He seems a bit more three dimensional, even if Aaron is just having fun with his own Marvel Batman. JMS's came off a little like an "angry black man" (though to his credit, JMS juxtaposed Nighthawk against the black Blur nicely), and Walker's Nighthawk was too much of a blank slate.

I don't see Nighthawk staying with the team long. He's got a darkness, as does all of the Hero Reborn "heroes", so I imagine he'll be killed off or something before too long. Until then we get the closest thing to a Batman in Marvel in a good while, and I even like how they basically draw Batman when Nighthawk is sometimes in silhouette. With Mephisto seemingly being the next big bad, it makes more sense for Nighthawk to be part of the Avengers right now anyway (albeit they can have more than one black hero at the same time on the team, but also there's Blade on the team. Blade needs more shine than T'Challa does).

Wow, they are really trying to re-deconstruct T'Challa the Black Panther.

Yeah... Except the whole sleeper agent things is so incredibly weak it's not even funny. Literally every nation (including Wakanda for literally centuries) has sleeper agents. Hell it's been known to the average Wakandans for years since he debut in FF. It's hardly new or "shocking" information.

The writer of the article is reaching HARD. This is about as ridiculous as the article written years ago trying to claim that Narcisse Rise series featured T'Challa as a weak protagonist and why that was a good thing. Saying ignorance such as "He wasn't afraid to ask for help and rely on his sister for help and inhibit toxic masculinity" when in the issue they are talking about this taking place literally had him shut Shuri down when she offers to help and he tells her he is going completely radio silence.

Man these folks get annoying

Remember back in 2007 when me and Jenn had a long discussion and debate about this pairing? And remember how R to the H had BP peep Tigra's Civil War betrayal from jump?

Aaron writes comics like those silver age issues one used to read on a Saturday afternoon. Simple, heroic, slightly quirky, clear good guy versus bad guy. This comic didn't offer anything truly creative nor add to mythos of the Black Panther. The Superman, Spider-Man, Iron Man nods did nothing for me and the ending... well let's just say vibranium is one hell of a metal and that Superman returns... but this time he's BLACK... Panther.

I don't like T'Challa removed from the Black Panther identity as I would prefer a deeper exploration into who is the Black Panther.

BLACK PANTHER is now STAR PANTHER!

Star Panther is a few heroes wrapped in one. He's part Black Panther, part Star-Lord, and part Superman. Thanks to his Vibranium armor keeping him alive, he somehow merged with the star King Killmonger threw him into, turning him into an all-new hero. Considering the power "of the white-hot heavens coursing through" his veins, the Multiversal Avengers just gained a powerful new ally in their quest to stop the Multiversal Masters of Evil.

I was about to get hyped about STAR PANTHER, until I remembered ANOTHER ULTRA POWERFUL BRUTHA who is SUDDENLY on "hush-hush" and we hear nada about him as of late.

Anybody know what happend to The Blue Marvel? We don't need STAR PANTHER to replace him...in the same way that we don't need Shuri or any friggin-body-else [ including Blade or Sam Wilson Cap ] to replace T'Challa in the MCU. Instead? WE NEED ALL OF THEM TOGETHER.
