Roman Israel Esq. Reviewed

I checked out Denzel's latest, Roman Israel Esq., today. I thought it was a good film-a legal drama/suspense thriller. It was one of Denzel's best performances. It looked like he was really enjoying playing against type as the pudgy, nearly antisocial (but not cruel) lawyer Roman Israel. Israel was a complex character, principled and flawed. An activist lawyer who questions his effectiveness or purpose, the film allows for a lot of discussion on the personal toll of leading an activist life.

The film is more legal drama, or really more about idealism and the struggle to remain true to your ideals than it is a suspense thriller. The suspense stuff happens later in the film. If you're looking for more adult fare at the theater this holiday I think you could do a lot worse than checking this film out.

I also thought the film had a nice soundtrack, lots of 70s soul.

Been wanting to see this flick
But in Philly it's only showing at one theater
And had only two showings a day, at night time, 7 & 10
Don't know what it says about quality but today there's only one showing
Regardless, today I'm going to try to make the 10:30am show with my kid and ex-wife
Thanks for the tip on the 70's music, it's specific to my generation and a nice holiday touch for the ex....of our lives

I kept looking for the lovable nerd
All that I saw was a crazy guy
The last scene did reveal
Women love Denzel
Hint: I'm a guy

Thought as much.  8)

Noticed Israel's fro as a dead giveaway in a few clips. Didn't think his fro made it that obvious.
