What if Black Panther was owned by ANIA?
« on: April 12, 2007, 06:32:10 PM »
What if the founders of Association of Black Comic Publishers (ANIA) owned
Black Panther and his villains, allies and supporting cast back in 1993?

What would happen if the ANIA founders changed T'Challla (BP)'s background/origin
to be more Afrocentric.

What would happen if some of The Black Panther characters had their origins change
to fit in with the continunity of the ANIA 'verse?

Would black comic fans be overjoyed with this sort of thing happening?

Would it draw new and old black comic readers, especially the BP fans,
to The Black Panther series if it was created under the ANIA imprint back then
or would it face the same declining sales with the rest of the ANIA comic books?

So then, what's your take on this if that sort of twist happened back in '93?

Of all your speculative questions, this one is the oddest to me.

How would Black Panther be "more" afrocentric?

As for ANIA itself, I don't know if I've ever seen any of their books in a bookstore.  I was handed a Captain Africa book back in the day (was that an ANIA book?) but I never saw one on bookshelves in any store I went to...and I shop in NY and LA and always check out a comic book with a black character.

Since I never saw the books, there were kind of defined in my mind as "the guys who hate on Milestone with no reason".

well Frostbite does say if they changed BP in "1993."  at that time the Kirby and Roy Thomas origins were still in effect.  In fact I think the Roy Thomas addition in the Fantastic Four Unlimited issue was pretty recent as of 1990?  Either way we were still looking at an African village that was modernized into a nation by an African king that studied in the West.

As far as ANIA goes, I wasn't reading comics at the time (highschool for me) and I had never heard of them but I had atleast heard and had seen a Milestone comic.  So I think that says something.  I've only heard a little bit recently about the supposed feud between the two companies back in the day.  From what I have read I can see the potential reason but ultimately when you have no advertisement or distribution your argument can only go so far.  Hell Brotherman got more distribution and publicity than ANIA but I guess that was a little earlier than ANIA and the brother who did that comic seemed like he pounded the pavement  way more.

oh and I would have to go with this being the oddest one of his questions:

Ah, yeah, sorry about the weird questions there, ya'll, but they just pop out of my head recently
and I really like posting those questions so someone (anyone) can answer the questions
and/or speak their opinions about those sort of questions.

Um, yeah... :-[

Well, we could learn more about Wakanda's history (which includes Wakandan languages, the Wakandan
tribes battles against each other, etc). BP could also, at times, use his moniker "Black Panther" in his own
language.

Yeah, it was.
