Before I saw Just Mercy, I thought 1917 should be a shoo-in for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. This was a very good film, though it dragged a bit in the middle. It was beautifully shot, even when it was depicting scenes of stark desolation and man's inhumanity. It was also well-acted, though the emotions were quieter than what was in Just Mercy.

1917 reminded me of Nolan's Dunkirk (it's better), Saving Private Ryan (Ryan is better), among other films. 1917 is one of the best war films I've ever seen, and it does not shy away from the brutality and madness of war. If you are fan of war films I definitely recommend this movie. Or if you are into survival stories, I also recommend it.

Though I feel Just Mercy hits the emotional buttons stronger, 1917 felt more like a going to the theater worthy experience more than Just Mercy did for me.
