Stormbreaker
« on: August 12, 2006, 08:03:29 pm »
I never watched Spy Kids. I'm disillusioned by the idea that kids should have fun being government spies, as if it were right or glamorous. But Stormbreaker is a comfortable exception, and partly because it works off the qualities that made 007 films great. The most important of these qualities is it's British. Gloria Britannica. Their spies pull it off with class, panache, and more common sense.  Main character, Alex Rider, been unknowingly raised to be a spy by his MI-6 uncle, Ian Rider, played by Ewan McGregor. After the uncle is 86'ed Padawan Alex learns the truth in a not so apologetic way. Uncle Ian lied. And MI-6 operative, Mrs. Jones, replies, "he lied to everybody". It's what they do.

That's another trait the British spies do so well. Even when they're assholes they don't apologize but they retain their dignity. Even though a Russian operative killed Alex's uncle, he proves to have some honor and empathy. That's more than you can say for Americans who are foolish in this flick. One is a smelly businessman, played by Mickey Rourke. The other is well-meaning but otherwise dumb (Alicia Silverstone). Of course Britain has it's own equals, like the conceited PM (played by Robbie Coltrane) and Alan Blunt (Bill Nighy). But like I said. They don't apologize and still keep their dignity.
Do you prefer a hero who will confirm your deepest fears? Or a hero who will inspire faith in humanity and goodness?

Pretty sure this was a British release, Kip.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0457495/

From the looks of it, it'll probably get a release over on this side....maybe. Thing is, even though its in english, it's probably going to be considered a foreign film here, so you'll have to find one of those bohemian-type theatres to see it in.
