*edit* Okay...I'm losing my mind. My processor won't go in this motherboard. It's an 1156 socket and the specs on the mobo are 1155. So. Much. f*cking. Fail. Talk about a rookie mistake.

I was pressed for time at Siggraph one year so I never got to test one out... I bought an iMac last year with 2 TB of storage and 16 GB of memory and will soon upgrade to something more diabolically fiendish later as I build up my digital effects studio workstation!


I need a good reason not to get the new Mac Pro that is designed in black to look sexy as whatever so if you can break down the 411 of buying or building a PC from scratch I'm all ears!

Clearly the ability to swap out graphics cards according to the task at hand is enticing but if it's a homemade PC does this mean I will be like one of those Harley Davidson bikers that spends more time fixing it than actually riding it!

Ho-kay. So the processor is going back. Apparently the 1156 socket was hot for all of about 20 minutes, and the mobo is a pretty good one, I think, at least for now. Definitely don't want an i3 b/c they can't be overclocked. *sigh* Marv, I think I'm going to take your advice and scrap an Intel setup entirely.

Everyone has their ol reliable.  About 6 years ago, I went AMD and didn't look back.  Performance, power and you just can't beat the price.  i5 will run you about 180 to 250. While a FX Series 8-Core AMD will run you about 139 to 300. 

My roommate is running an intensely modded Skyrim and Farcry 3 on Ultra with jaw dropping smoothness.

Whether you go Intel or AMD, shop around and get what's trusted.  I took the leap and loved every minute of my gaming.

Allllllright. After temporarily losing my mind with an Intel build that I would've had to sell my firstborn for, I remembered that - praise white Jesus - I live near a Micro Center. ("Near" being "over 1/2 an hour away".) So now we've changed to...

Motherboard: AMD FX 8320 Black Edition 3.5GHz AM3+ = $108
Processor: ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 Socket AM3+ 990FX = supposedly $97 after rebate. I'm not holding out hope.
Memory: Corsair XMS3 4 GB 1333MHz PC3-10666 240-pin DDR3
Graphics card: GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 650 Ti OC 1GB
Tuner: WinTV-HVR-1250 HDTV
OS: Windows 8 x64

I'm going to call it Marv. <3

what should I look for?  mac? PC?
I'd need something with enough memory to host lots of audio/video files, and cool recording/editing software..

I'm an agnostic in the Mac vs. PC divide; I have both. Here's the main differences as I see it:

Mac
+ simple, seamless user experience
+ generally less security problems
- you pay a premium for equivalent computing power

PC
+ wider variety of sizes, configurations, price points
+ more configurable (at least I think so)
+ generally wider selection of software, free and otherwise
- you have to be your own system administrator especially for security and updates; even though I know how, it can get a little tedious.

My current laptop is a MacBook Pro. It did cost a little more; on the other hand, it just works. I might go for one of those solid state storage ones next time around.

I just got my son one of those Acer Aspire laptops with a touch screen and he's really happy with it.

I don't have any complaints.

AMD video cards with the ATI chipsets contain much beefier horsepower than NVidia cards.
