Is video gaming a spectator sport?
I have played a few games but I'm not really a gamer. As far as I'm concerned, I can think of very little less interesting than watching others play. I understand that some people feel this way about sports.

IMO, it depends on the game, I can watch people play Madden or NCAA Football, but not FPS or strategy games.  It's like watching a football game with idiots as head coaches! ;D

Yep.  Sure is...  incredibly huge in Korea.  Videogame companies are legitimazing it here in the states, however, it's being met with scorn.

I'm one of those people who can't tolerate watching sports (unless it's a championship-type game to end the season).  When I was kid, I used to spectate a lot whereever videogames were being played (I still do) generally observing for signs of improved sentient artificial intelligence.  Nowadays, videogame companies are scrapping that concept and saying,

"To hell with A.I.!  Let the players beat the hell out of each other!" ;D

Sort of, kinda.

First Person Shooters tournaments are big deal here. I figure they have got to have spectators of some sort.

They still have fighting game tournaments in the states(I can readily see spectating appeal in that). They are even a bigger deal in Asia.

I won a fighting game tournament back in '99 in Florida.  They're fun and they even had ring card girls! LOL  It's like boxing for geeks!

...and in the states, another Hollywood party to attend with some real mature lady and some more of her friends...      ...for gamers, that is.

I find "progaming" hilarious. Yes a few got successful but honestly one can't place "won tekken 5 in 2005 - 2007" on a resume. But then again they might if they can become a "game tester" i guess.

I agree.  I find pro gaming ridiculous, too.
However, what if the prospective employer  happens to enjoy Tekken? ...or has a son/daughter that does, as well?

My point is, you can't place "played 3 seasons of basketball in 2005 - 2007" on a resume, either.

Anybody ever see "The King Of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters" about the quest to get the high score in Donkey Kong?

It just goes to show you than in any field of endevour there are obsessives.

But that said, these guys are pretty out there.  :o :o :o

You wouldn't think a Documentary about videogaming would have a villain in it, but there you go.  ;D

i guess it'll applies if one wants to become a game tester. It is a potential confident booster but on the real. Nah I don't think so. The amount of money they make is chump change. The most I have seen so far is 100K for ultimate gamer. Shoot if I had the time to play against the computer and do physical stunts i think i would have won that. Shoot maybe anyone one of us. But I guess since im not a "progamer" nor have the proof of winning tourneys I guess i cant join huh? LOL

As for the donkey kong thing I know of that guy and meh really.

Fascinating!
I've never heard of this film before (then again, there were a lot of movies in the double zeroes I've never heard before!).  I'm looking at the trailer right now on youtube and I'm instantly brought back to the early 1980s Queens, NY during  high school when arcades were the place to be.  It certainly didn't help matters much when the arcade was a mere  2 blocks fom high school.  Donkey Kong was one of my favorite games and yes, it was brutal to play but it was fun to see how high can you go! :D
There were 2 kinds of scenes in the arcades back-in-th'-day:
There was the day scene when the younger,  nerdy kids would fill up the arcades and play thier high scores and then there was the night scene when the older crowd would take over with thier high scores.  The older crowd was hardcore.  I'm talking 'bout large groups o' chicks and dudes driving in  thier Iroc-Zs, and buicks that  would come in from Howard Beach, Belle Harbor, and Rockaway Park. There'd  be blunt smoke  in the back of the arcade, cocaine, and who knows what else...  It was all so innocent then but these people were all serious gamers. This area was so popular that I remember a movie was shot at this location.  Anyway,   that was what I remember it was like and seeing that trailer  reminded me of that time.
I see this kind of excitement happening again with this eSports thing...
