Huh...I don't really think of Oatmeal and Grits as competing. I generally have grits as a side dish, while oatmeal and cream of wheat are a breakfast in themselves. Likewise, oatmeal and cream of wheat are usually flavored with sweet things (brown sugar, maple syrup), while grits are buttery and salty.

Have been forced to eat grits as a kid (and rarely do it as an adult)....eat more oatmeal whether in cookies or rolled organic oats with boiled water and dried cherries with raw organic honey now.   ;D .....so oatmeal wins another vote.

Wise - Perhaps it would be more pleasant if you think of it (or them) as ground hominy.

Sure.

..........

What's hominy? :-\
Lion - Forgive them, they're foreigners.   ::)
Yeah! We forgave you for being American! It's not your fault!

Wise, looks like we're being percecuted in the name of Grits!!
Yeah, these Americans are crazy! Personally, having said that the name makes it sound unappealing, I was just glad no one brought up the fact that one of England's traditional puddings is Spotted Dick.
Once was more than enough to satisfy my curiousity. But who knows maybe when I'm in a fear factor mood I'll give it another go. Until then, Oatmeal tastes so much better.
Well, let me know. I'm considering you my flavour-crash-test-dummy on this matter.

Sure, but do update me on the Spotted Dick delicacy(sorry man, you put it out there). I hope it isn't too limp, or too stiff.  ;D

Fnar! Well, it is normally served with custard, so the imagery gets more... interesting.

When well done, it is quite firm, and very filling. If served with golden syrup as well, it does get a bit limp, but it's worth it. Few things are more satifying than a nice, warm pile of spotted dick. Mmmmm.
 ;D
Very fattening, like most british desserts.

Grits is the greater delicacy.
Oatmeal has to be of a certain type to be palatable.
Grits is good no matter what!
