Is Storm a Queen?
« on: October 02, 2006, 04:57:22 PM »
I have been gone for awhile, so perhaps this question has been addressed but I am curious.

I know there are all sorts of complicated rules about who is and is not royalty but my knowledge mostly comes from the British royal family.

Panther is King of Wakanda, and, until the writer decides otherwise, spritual head of the Panther Clan/Religeous group. Is Storm just his wife, or does she at some point become 'Queen Ororo'. She was identified for years as a Goddess in Kenya, putting her, in some respects on par with T'Challa as far as spiritual significance. If she's just his 'wife' then that potentially means that their kids would be princes and princesses but she'd be just the 'Queen mother' but not neccessarily the queen? Or, because T'Challa can legally and culturally have kids with any of his dora milaje - is Storm basically just the FIRST wife. Which is an important role in some cultures but not on par with a queen.

I'm wondering if anyone actually knows how this works out in the comic.

I didn't know BP could have kids with the members of the Dora Milaje, then again I'm very new to BP.The way you described it, it sounds like the way ancient Egyptian society was set up. The FIRST wife was considered queen and thus her children had the better oppurtunity of acending the throne, but the reason for so many wives or concubines were to produce heirs! A king can't go out without a proper heir, now can he?

To answer you question though, Marvel solicitations it's "King T'Challa" and "Queen Ororo".

The Dora Milaje as "wives in training" was more of a thing in the previous BP series, where it was kind of a plot point. Basically, the Dora Milaje were part of a tradition intended to keep the various tribes of Wakanda united, by having each tribe connected to the Black Panther. They were considered "Wives in training", though the Black Panther was not obligated to marry any of them (they were unable to marry until released from service, however). They were also much younger than  T'Challa, leading him (Priest BP seemed to be in his late 30's/early 40s) to see them more as wards than potential girlfriends. This became somewhat of a problem because one of his Dora Milaje was infatuated with T'Challa, and frustrated by his love for Monica. After Mephisto manipulated T'Challa into accidently kissing this Dora Milaje, her feelings became stronger, eventually leading her to attempt to kill Monica. Despite her attempts to cover up what she had done, T'Challa immediately saw through her lies and fired her. She eventually ran away, and became a villain in the Priest series.

Keep in mind, I don't think most of this info has any pertinence to the current series, where T'Challa is younger, the Dora Milaje are older, and appear to be strictly elite bodyguards.

I have wondered what the rules for Dora Milaje is now that BP is married as well.  This is something that will be up to Hudlin's discretion on how he wants to break it down.  I just hope it is addressed at some point

Malice! That's her name. And while we haven't heard about it in the current series, the status quo is that the Dora Milaje are free to marry after T'Challa chooses his wife, I believe.

Btw, what were Malice's powers/abilities? I mean, Dora Milaje are hardcore, but if she was bad enough to menace Black Panther, there must have been more to it than that.

Killmonger gave her a bunch of powers. Did something to her skin as well. The wierd thing is that in issue # 6 there was a somewhat suggestive scene that perhaps the Dora Milaje in this version were occasional sexual consorts as well, almost like Hope and Mercy were for Lex Luthor. Then again, you can never tell in this series.

Agreed.  Hudlin could show that Storm can go hand to hand and kick butt....she hasn't done that in a while...and she is a strong fighter!
