I watched the great documentary WHY WE LAUGH which covered the evolution of Black comedy from the perspective of Black comedians. The doc covered all the greats: Gregory, Foxx, Cosby, Pryor, Murphy, Rock, Chappellle, Mack and Harris to name a few.

And then there's, Whoopi.

Now I know she is a star; and has been one for quite some time, but comedy legend?

So I put it to the HEF army.

Whoopi Goldberg: Comedy legend.

Yay or Nay?

My opinion, * cue Red Foxx vote*

LEGEND? ARE YOU CRAZY! Cool

I would say a yay. She's a smart comedian. I think for women comics she's a legend.  Whoopi has acheieved alot in comdey. From standup to succesful films. She's kinda like the female Eddie Murphy. They both were great success in the eighties. Also lets be honest, a woman that looks like Whoopi getting her own films and it makes alot of money itself is enough to say she a legend. Who comes close? Maybe Moms Mabely. I'm not the biggest fan of hers, but i don't see to many blk female comedians doing what Whoopi has done. She paved the way for the Moniques and Wandas.

Whoopi Goldberg: Comedy legend.

Yay or Nay?

Absolutely!

She's had her own television talk show. She's been a frequent guest on television talk shows. Ms. Goldberg's roles in movies range from  comedy,  to drama.

She's even been on Star Trek.   a lot.

She's done it all in Hollywood and entertainment.

When Woopie did her stand-up  back in '84 on HBO (was it?), the one routine that always stayed with me was when she played a spaced-out, derelict on drugs but maintained her dignity by saying somethin' to the effect,
[paraphrase]
"Y'see, I have a Bachelor's degree from college and I can't seem to get a job nowhere, so I get high to keep me from being pissed off all the time." Grin
