I loved the David Chapelle show.
But truth be told, with In Living Color you got Men On Film, Homey The Clown, The Malapropism Militant, Fire Marshall Bill and Vera De Milo.
The show broke both the Winans as a group and Jim Carrey, Jaime Foxx AND Rosie Perez. ILC also sorta, kinda broke Jennifer Lopez too.
The only recurring character I remember from the Chappelle show was the Rick James stuff and Wiggums the crackhead. Though Chappelle’s one-off sketches were funny as hell (the Black blind Klansman, the history of gang warfare with Mos Def, what happens to Dave when everybody leans he has money) and had quite a bit of social comment to it.
You really can’t say the Chappelle show broke anybody(So what’s Charlie Murphy doing now?). It made Rick James popular again but that kind of doesn’t count.
It’s weird how much In Living Color is intertwined with the era of conscious “happy rap” to the point that it is like In Living Color never existed either despite the show’s historical importance.
Keenan and Fam took a walk when Fox tried to tell them what to do. Dave had to flee to Africa to escape what his success wrought.
The Chapelle Show is more well remembered but that’s probably only because its more recent.
