Pres. Obama's Supreme Court Pick
« on: April 12, 2010, 08:43:57 am »
By the end of the summer, there should be a new addition to the Supreme Court. What should President Obama look for when considering a nominee to replace retiring Justice John Paul Stevens in the Supreme Court?

How does the candidate interpret law?  How much appellate experience does the candidate have?  ...judicial experience?

Personally, I've been subjected to the abuses of really, really awful, unscrupulous judges in my life who did not hesitate to infringe on my basic civil rights (free speech, for example) and I would like to see someone sitting in the star chamber who can best represent cases involving race, gender and Big Business in a manner that aligns with how I would have seen it.

Former Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears

Former Georgia Supreme Court Justice Leah Ward Sears, an expert in family law and the first African-American woman to serve as a State Supreme Court chief justice, was on Obama's short list last year. A member of the left-leaning American Constitution Society, it would be nice to see a Black woman on the Supreme Court but unfortunately she is also a friend of conservative Justice Clarence Thomas.

There are other candidates rumored, like
Goodwin Liu

...and Elana Kagan
