Benjamin Lawson Hooks
« on: April 15, 2010, 08:09:32 pm »

We lost Ben Hooks today (April 15, 2010) and all of us who cherish freedom, respect human dignity and believe that our country can live up to its ideals are the poorer for his passing.  Yes, he was a successful lawyer, judge, Baptist preacher and civil rights leader, but he was more.  He could ignite downtrodden spirits and stimulate self-help among those who deemed themselves helpless.  In an era of brutal racial segregation and amidst rampant poverty, his influence induced courage in the most vulnerable and inspired enterprise when there were few places we could enter and we possessed so little that we could prize.
God rest his soul from a life of fruitful service, especially to those who were treated unfairly

Best regards,
