If I could only own one stock...
« on: April 21, 2010, 08:06:01 am »
I’m regularly asked several versions of essentially the same question; “If I could own only one stock, what stock should I own?”

The short answer is, Apple Inc (stock symbol: AAPL), but not yet.

Yesterday, Apple posted the results of another amazing quarter, in a long string of incredible quarters. iphone sales were up 131% year over year. ipod sales are holding their own, up 12%. And earnings per share were up an astounding 86%

Apple’s quarterly report was filled encouraging stats and news, including optimistic ipad sales info. It is noteworthy that the ipad rolled out too late to be included in the quarterly results just released, so the good news expected from the ipad won’t be reflected until the next quarter results are released.

In my opinion, the most telling stat in the Apple quarterly results was that Mac computer sales were up 27%. To me, this indicates that it’s Apple’s world – we just live in it! Apple has created an integrated network of devices that all connect back to, and around, the Mac. Apple might be the best run company in America.

That’s a much abbreviated reason why Apple belongs in every portfolio. However, don’t rush out to buy AAPL today. Yesterday, when Apple released their quarterly earnings the stock price shot up as high as $265/share in after-hours trading. This morning it is trading under $260/share. I think it will pull back further and can be bought around $230/share, rewarding those who are patient.

I’m not advocating that anyone buy just one stock blindly. But if I had to own just one stock, hands down, it would be Apple (AAPL).

Thanks man.

So is this essentially what you are saying: the hours I’ve poured over charts, financials, and annual reports, achieved the exact same result as your “feeling”?

Ouch!
Just kidding

As a Mac user for 20 years, I definitely love Apple, even though the Gen1 iPad sucks. but to pick just one stock? I gotta go with Google, for the long haul.
It's not JUST Apple's world, Google owns it too and will continue for a long time to come.  While Apple concentrates on a singular strategy – focusing on one product at a time, Google is concentrating on making a system that goes far beyond just one mobile phone or device. Google's Android OS is being looked at to run everything from Tablet PC's to Cars. This company is slowly taking over the world :D

Kristopher,

I respect your choice of Google as the stock to own, if you could only have one. A year ago, I might have even agreed with you. Lately, Google has been swinging for the fences and one, or some, of those cuts might make it the ultimate winner. But today, Apple is executing like nobody's business!

The good news is you can own both GOOG & AAPL, sit back, watch and enjoy the race.

If you are a buyer of Google, I'd bet you can be patient and buy it between $520 - $530/share in the near future.

One more to add to your list of potential ultimate stocks is Intel (INTC). It is trading at $23.80 and I wouldn't be surprised to see it trading in the $40's this year.

Kristopher,

Not sure if you watch this stuff closely, but Google is trading under $530/share. Apple continues to climb, but I still expect it will pull back a bit.

I don't follow THAT closely. I'm not a "gotta check my stock everyday" kind of person. Yeah, Apple's up, they should be, they conned God knows how many people into believing that the iPad is the best thing ever invented. Now folks are rushing out to get one and be Beta testers for those of us how actually aren't impressed by bells and whistles. I read Jobs' tirade against Adobe Flash yesterday and had to laugh when Job’s first objection was that Flash is not open. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. How do you think that little "war" Apple VS Adobe plays out?

I read this earlier in the month:
New Photoshop for Android includes Apple potshot
Adobe Systems released a new version of its Photoshop.com Mobile application for Android phones on Thursday night, an upgrade that came with an apparent attempt to tweak Apple's nose.

The new version gets more editing options. It adds "vibrant" to make photo colors richer and "pop" for a pop-art style. Also new are "soft black and white," "warm vintage," "vignette blur," "white glow," and "rainbow," Adobe said.

But more significantly, perhaps, the mobile editing software also now can be incorporated by other programs on the phone. "Third-party application developers now have access to the Photoshop.com Mobile for Android 1.1 editor, allowing them to easily make it a part of their applications," Adobe said.

This is where the Apple potshot comes in--a notable move given a public squabble over Apple's unwillingness to include Adobe's Flash Player on the iPhone or forthcoming iPad.

"Unlike iPhone, the Android platform allows us to make the Photoshop.com editor broadly available to developers so they can provide it within any application they are working on. Photoshop functionality can then easily be accessed from an online auction, real estate, or social media application so users can quickly fix photos and make them look their best, before being showcased," Doug Mack, general manager of Adobe's Digital Imaging and Rich Media Solutions group, said in a statement.

The remark is hardly a condemnation of Apple. But I can't remember Adobe ever going out of its way to take sides by calling attention to what Photoshop on Mac OS X can do that it can't on Windows or vice versa.

My wife sent me this:
Google TV to be Unveiled Next Month
We’ve been curious about the Google TV initiative since hearing about the search giant’s foray into set-top box land, and although scant few details have emerged since then we can now look forward to a full reveal at next month’s I/O Developer Conference.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Google (Google) will unveil the Android (Android)-based television platform at its annual developer event in San Francisco on May 19 and 20.

Hardware partners, including Sony, Intel and Logitech, have already announced plans to release products on the Google TV platform. Consumer electronics giant Samsung also recently confirmed that it’s considering the platform as well — an interesting move considering Samsung already has its own app store for Internet-connected TVs.

Google has extended significant tendrils into the television space lately, both with the Google TV project and with a television search initiative with Dish Network. In some ways it’s a logical “third screen” move now that the internet company has established itself as a significant player in the mobile space.

We’re eagerly awaiting new details about Google TV at I/O. What would make you interested in a Google set-top box?

And
I'm interested in see this in person:

For the long haul, Google is THE company(IMHO) to bet on.

Nokia targets Apple's iPad in new lawsuit
Claims iPad, iPhone infringe five Nokia patents

Dunno how this will turn out but the two companies have been wrangling over intellectual property issues for a good while now.

Think broad gentlemen not just in "Tech" stocks. I remember the first day my hubby suggested Apple bought some held on to not sad about it. But at the same time bought a little pharma stuff DID well but the fastest quickest money was in something I knew nothing about' other than the fun side. Stock in casinos. Everytime I see the MGM I guess the floor as I walk in. ;)

I know you all that I was going to say something like "tiffany" It comes on such pretty blue paper

Disney is a well run company with lots going for it. Owning Disney makes sense to me, but if you could only own one stock, Apple still takes the honor. At least in my opinion..

It's interesting that this is the most popular thread in the finance section.  I keep trying to figure out why and post more threads like it.
