Good question! :D

Here are the first 5 directors I can think of right now, not counting their misses:

1. Alfred Hitchcock --- For playing Hollywood studios at thier own game;  Hollywood studios were known to take studio director's footage and edit accordingly, losing the artistic integrity of the film but Hitchcock would submit his footage already edited so that there was no room for studios to cut! ;D

2. Ralph Bakshi --- For allowing animated Black cartoon characters in his movies  and having cartoon characters  drink alchol, smoke weed, have sex, use profanity and spew blood!

3. George Lucas --- For having Black actors in key roles in his student films and movies when it wasn't fashionable to do so.

4. Oscar Micheaux --- For putting Black actors and actresses into movies when it was impossible to do so.

5. Bob Chinn --- For being the first to  shoot adult entertainment with a distinctive Hollywood style.

It was Tim Burton who got me into movies and interested in making them. Chris Nolan is a recent favorite. Spielberg for his versatility. Haven't seen too much of Hitchcock, but I'm always impressed and amazed every time I see one of his movies.

Although not really a director but more of a producer, I LOVE Val Lewton. Doing research and watching his movies, you can pretty much see all his influences in his movies and also the movies his director's made that he didn't have a hand in (the original The Haunting). His movies like Cat People, Seventh Victim, Curse of the Cat People, and my favorite I Walked With a Zombie are nothing short of top notch with beautiful styles. I'm always inspired by his movies.

I'on't know about this one, bro. :)  Lucas made we want to get into the game with Star Wars, but he caught a lot of flack at the time for having such a lily white film.  Quite frankly, I think he only cast Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian and peppered Empire and Return with a Black extra or two to silence critics.  But then again, he didn't actually direct either one of these, so who knows.  Also, don't forget he gave us a modern Step n Fetchit with Jar Jar Binks.

4. Oscar Micheaux --- For putting Black actors and actresses into movies when it was impossible to do so.

Yessir!  Respect to the pioneers!!

My list, right off the top:
1) Spike Lee
2) Martin Scorcese
3) Steven Spielberg
4) Sam Peckinpah
5) Akira Kurosawa
