Hickory man arrested after deputies say he robbed and assaulted a man on Lincoln County Walking Trail

by WCNC (NBC News affiliate)

A Hickory man has been charged with assaulting and robbing a Taylorsville man after the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said the two men met at the Lincoln County Walking Trail in the 2600 block of Laboratory Road in Lincolnton back on Wednesday, May 22.

Deputies said the 34-year-old victim, met 18-year-old Ethan Roten on a social dating website, agreed to meet with Roten at around 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22.

The victim told deputies that after the two met in a parking lot they walked down the trail for about five minutes before going through a wooded area to the South Fork River.

They sat on the river bank talking until Roten said he needed to go to the restroom.

Deputies said Roten then walked behind the victim and struck him in the left side of the face.

The victim blacked out for a short period of time and when he woke up he saw Roten running down the path where they had walked in.

The victim said Roten took his cap and headlight, $300 in cash and vape pen and tubes.

Because he was not familiar with the area he drove around for about 30 minutes before stopping at a convenience store in the 1400 block of East Main Street, Lincolnton, NC.

Law enforcement and Lincoln County EMS were dispatched to the scene.

The victim was treated on the scene then transferred to Atrium – Lincoln for additional treatment for a laceration over his eye.

Deputies report Roten has been charged with felony common law robbery.

Roten was arrested in Burke County on May 25, 2019 and is under a $20,000 secured bond.

8 years in prison for honeymooner who pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in wife's death at sea

by Linda Trischitta

(MIAMI, Fl) - Two years after Isabella Hellman vanished in the Caribbean Sea while on a honeymoon cruise, a federal judge sentenced her husband Lewis Richard Bennett Tuesday to eight years in prison for the involuntary manslaughter of his wife.

In a Miami courtroom, Judge Federico Moreno called it "a very sad case."

He also ordered Bennett, 42, to pay a $22, 910 in restitution, money that was seized by the FBI and have three years' supervision upon his release.

Bennett was clean shaven and wore tan and brown scrubs, a chain around his waist and handcuffs on his wrists.
When Moreno asked if he wished to appeal the sentence, he said, "No your honor."

Hellman, a real estate saleswoman in Delray Beach, and Bennett had a daughter, Emelia, 2, who is being raised by his parents in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The night of May 14, 2017, Hellman and Bennett were sailing their 40-foot catamaran Surf into Summer north from Cuba and were southeast of the Florida Keys.

Hellman was an inexperienced sailor and disappeared as the boat was nearing the Bahamas.

Prosecutors accused Bennett of not searching for his wife.

Bennett said he'd been sleeping, a noise woke him up and he found Hellman was gone from their vessel.

Court documents said he had stocked a life raft with supplies that would keep him alive and accused him of sinking the catamaran on purpose.

Records described quarter-sized holes in the fiberglass hull that had been made from inside the boat.

Bennett, a dual citizen of the United Kingdom and Australia, is college educated and has traveled the globe.

He wants to work in solar heating after he serves his time, according to a lawyer and court documents.

Bennett was originally supposed to be sentenced in January, but Moreno postponed that until the families arranged for Hellman's relatives to visit her daughter in Scotland and for her Delray Beach condo to be sold.

Neither event has happened, though on May 9, a Palm Beach County probate court ruled that Hellman was officially dead.

A judge also ordered the FBI to give the condo keys to a lawyer for Bennett's parents so that the property may be sold.

Hellman's relatives are scheduled to visit Emelia in person in June, to supplement their visits on Facetime.

Bennett apologized to Hellman's family in January, saying, "I know that they have been through unimaginable pain as a result of my actions and for that I am truly sorry."

He also called Hellman his "soulmate" and said then that losing her "was the greatest loss I have ever endured."

Still unspoken by him in court is how his wife died.

Authorities searched the ocean for four days but never found her.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons will determine where Bennett serves his time.

Woodbury school bus sex assault suspect pleads guilty to slashing wife’s throat

by Mary Divine

Woodbury school bus aide Harvey Kneifl pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Tuesday, saying he stabbed his wife with a knife 14 times in order to save her from a life of pain and suffering.

Kneifl, 72, said Julie A. Kneifl, 72, had Parkinson’s disease, which caused her to have dementia.

“She was living the life of, basically, a vegetable,” he said during a hearing in Washington County District Court in Stillwater.

“She was in constant pain, constant suffering. I decided to help her move on to the next life where she would no longer have any pain or suffering.”

Officers discovered her body on the morning of Jan. 31 when they went to the couple’s home in the St. Therese of Woodbury senior housing complex to check on the whereabouts of Harvey Kneifl, who had failed to appear in court in Stillwater on charges of molesting 10 young children on his school bus.

They found him in a shower, bleeding from a neck wound; two knives were on the floor close to him.

On Tuesday morning, Kneifl, wearing handcuffs and a blue jail-issued shirt and pants, spoke candidly about the injuries he inflicted.

“I slit her carotid artery, so her death would be fast and painless,” he said.

“I wanted to kill her and have it be quick and painless.”

When Prosecutor Imran Ali questioned Kneifl as to why he needed to stab her 14 times and impose six blunt-force wounds, including some on her hands, Kneifl said Julia Kneifl struggled prior to her death.

“It wasn’t intentional,” he said. “She was flailing for a minute or two.”

After she died, Kneifl said he removed his wife’s bloody t-shirt and covered her with a blanket.

He threw the t-shirt in the trash and then took the trash bag out of their apartment and put it in the place “where we take the trash,” he said.

“I used towels to clean up, and I threw those in the trash as well.”

Under the terms of a plea agreement, Kneifl was sentenced to 30 years in prison and fined $5,000.

He was given credit for serving 118 days in the Washington County Jail and waived his right to a pre-sentence investigation.

Kneifl will remain at the jail until his June 5 sentencing on 10 felony counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct for allegedly groping 10 girls in 2017 as they rode the South Washington County School District bus.

Kneifl, who has a high-school diploma, said he was on medication for gout, but had clear thoughts and was able to think rationally and make informed decisions during the court hearing.

Kneifl’s daughter and son-in-law were in the courtroom, but declined to make a victim-impact statement.

Ali called Julie Kneif’s death a “brutal murder.”

“This defendant took the life of his innocent wife in the most cold and calculated and brutal manner,” Ali said.

“For the sake of the victim, I won’t go into the amount of blood found at the crime scene.”

Kneifl’s attorney, Nathan Sosinski, said his client tried to commit suicide after killing his wife.

“He thought he was going to prison,” Sosinski said.

“He was concerned about who was going to take care of her, and he was worried about her being a burden. That was what was in his head.”

His client, he said, will be “dying in prison” and not have a source of income to pay the $5,000 fine.

When Judge Tad Jude asked if Kneifl would like to address the court, Kneifl responded: “No thanks.”

“It is an exceptionally sad occasion for your family and for the community,” Jude said.

A relative of one of the children in the criminal-sexual conduct case also was in the courtroom.

He shouted at Kneifl as a bailiff was leading Kneifl out of the courtroom:

“You touched the wrong 4-year-old girl.”

Kneifl has been charged with groping at least 10 children over their clothes as they rode the school bus; each victim was 5 or younger.

At the time of the alleged incidents, in January and February 2017, Kneifl was working as a bus aide on a route for pre-K and special-needs children.

Grandparents fought off white man who tried to abduct 6-year-old girl

by WPTZ (NBC News affiliate)

An Indiana man is behind bars, accused of attempting to kidnap a 6-year-old girl from her grandparents' home.

According to WTHR, Benjamin Dillon, 37, faces a slew of charges including counts of burglary, intimidation and resisting law enforcement.

Witnesses told WTHR that Dillon kicked his way into a Lebanon apartment in the middle of the night.

The girl's grandparents, Martin Roth and Patricia Roth, reportedly fought him off and kept him away from the girl until police arrived.

The Roths told officers that Dillon, who they had never seen before, told them he was "taking the child."

“I was sound asleep in my bedroom and this guy came kicking in and said, 'You have my daughter,'” Patricia Roth told Fox 59.

“I was nervous, very nervous. I was shaking so bad."

A police report states that officers found Dillon outside "shirtless and very agitated, insisting there was a little girl in the apartment being raped" and "that the little girl was his daughter."

Officers shocked Dillon with a Taser but it had no effect.

When finally handcuffed, officers said he "then kept kicking us and screaming."

The man was taken to the Boone County Jail.

The 6-year-old girl was very frightened, but unhurt.

“I wouldn’t want him walking back in my apartment again. He will regret it the next time,” Patricia Roth said.

Dillon attempted to clarify the incident in a jailhouse phone call with WTHR.

"I was under the impression that maybe my daughter might be over there in that apartment complex," he said.

Dillon denies threatening to take the 6-year-old girl and even denies kicking in the Roth's door.
While jailed on bonds totaling $75,000, Dillon said he's enrolled in a substance abuse treatment program.

Judge in upstate New York dies after a heart attack on the bench
"Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you." (Matthew 7:1-2)
by Harmeet Kaur and Monica Haider

A judge in upstate New York died after suffering a heart attack in his courtroom.

Putnam County Court Judge James Reitz had just finished a case on the bench Friday morning when he asked a court officer for help.

Reitz then collapsed.

The officer performed CPR on the judge until he was taken by ambulance to the hospital, Odell said.

White man impersonates officer, attempts traffic stop on I-695

by WBAL (NBC News affiliate)

Maryland State Police arrested a man who authorities said impersonated an officer and attempted to perform traffic stops on I-695.

Police said a trooper observed Timothy Trivett, 54, of Yorktown, Virginia, driving in an aggressive manner around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police said Trivett was trying to stop a gray Honda Accord on the Outer Loop of the Beltway at Greenspring Avenue.

Police said he had flashing blue-and-white lights on his 2012 black-and-white Chevrolet Impala.

"Our trooper followed him until he pulled onto the shoulder and it appeared that he was trying to make a traffic stop," Maryland State Police spokeswoman Elena Russo said.

State police said the trooper pulled behind the Impala and made contact with Trivett, who was wearing what appeared to be police equipment, body armor and a police uniform.

According to charging documents, Trivett was dressed in a dark-blue uniform with patches on the sleeves, an exterior vest with a badge that stated "Special Officer" and a black nylon gun belt.

Police said the gun belt carried three pepper spray containers, an expandable baton, two sets of handcuffs, a knife and two handguns.

Police said they found 20 rounds of ammunition.

"Anybody with a loaded handgun I would believe to be dangerous, particularly if you are a motorist getting pulled over by somebody who is possibly trying to look like a police officer," Russo said.

State police said Trivett's uniform was that of a security guard and that Trivett did not have a carry permit or a security guard license.

"He had no law enforcement credentials," Russo said.

"He was outfitted in what looked like real police garb."

Police said Trivett told the trooper that he activated the lights in his car because someone was tailgating him.

Police said Trivett told the trooper that he was not trying to pull the car over.

Trivett was arrested without incident and charged with impersonating a police officer, as well as multiple handgun charges.

He was taken to the Baltimore County Detention Center and later released on an unsecured bond.

White Woman Spikes Fiance's Soda With Eye Drops

by ABC News

A woman in North Carolina looked to the movies for inspiration as she tried to poison her fiance with eye drops, authorities said.

Jaymee Lynn Cruz, of Salisbury, about 40 miles northeast of Charlotte, was arrested on Saturday after her fiance noticed her putting eye drops in his soda, according to the Rowan County Sheriff's Office.

Cruz told deputies she got the idea to spike his drink from watching the movie "Wedding Crashers."

There's a scene in the 2005 film where John, the character played by Owen Wilson, puts eye drops in the drink of his rival, Sack Lodge, played by Bradley Cooper.

The "prank" makes him violently ill, though the intention was not death.

She told deputies she only planned to make her fiance sick, as well.

Upon seeing his fiancee spike his drink, he took the couple's child and hid in the bathroom and called 911, according to authorities.
The couple was arguing over the custody of their child, and she wanted to move out of the home with her daughter, deputies said.

She has been charged with distributing noxious or deleterious food, a class H felony in North Carolina, and punishable by up to 25 months in jail.

The eye-drop method of poisoning has been used before.

Lana Clayton, a woman in South Carolina, admitted to killing her husband by putting eye drops in his drinks over the course of several days in July 2018, according to the York County Sheriff's Office.

She was charged with murder and granted a public defender in October, despite previously owning a million-dollar estate, and is still awaiting trial, according to the Rock Hill, South Carolina, Herald.

Deputy accused of having sex with teen appears in court
by WKCRA (NBC News affiliate)

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy who is accused of having sex with a 16-year-old boy appeared in court Thursday.

Shauna Bishop, 44, did not enter a plea, and she was told not to have any contact with the 16-year-old.

Bishop will appear again in court in July 2019.

She is on leave at the Sheriff’s Office until the case is over.

She has been with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department for five years and most recently patrolled the north county.

The county is conducting a separate investigation.
