DC announces new titles
« on: June 02, 2011, 11:38:13 AM »
So as not to interrupt the other thread.

In addition to the Justice League book with Johns and Lee D.C is doing:

Wonder Woman with Brian Azzerello and Cliff Chang

Aquaman with Johns and Ivan Reis

Firestorm with EVS and Gail Simon and Yandray Cinar

Mister Terrific from Eric Wallace and artist Roger Robinson.

Justice League International from Dan Jurgens and artist Aaron Lopresti

Thoughts?

O.K. it also looks like there is a Flash book by Manapul and Buccellato.

A Green Arrow book by J.T. Krul and Dan Jurgens,

Savage Hawkman by Tony Daniel and Phillip Tan,

and a Captain Atom book from JT Krul and artist Freddie Williams II.

Will check out Mr. Terrific and Johns and Lee on Justice League. Not sure about the others...

Gail Simone on Firestorm?  >:( We had a heated argument about Wonder Woman's sister Nubia on CBR, if you ask me she doesn't understand Black people at all.

I prefer them to Marvel. They're darker and I like the legacies.

That's why everybody's different. I used to $#@% with X-Men but got tired of the crossovers. Now I'm only 'bout the Avengers, Cage and BP. I'll buy anything Black though.

Obviously I am looking forward to the JLI book.  Jurgans is a solid old school writer who is doing a great job on booster gold and had a pretty good run following giffen and dematteis.

Also lookiing forward to Johns on aquaman.  Really enjoyed his story in brightest day.

I am holding out hope for captain atom but I'm not a fan of the creative team.

I'm curious to know more about that exchange. I like Simone's work with Secret Six, but it noticeably doesn't have any black characters. Though Amanda Waller has shown up in the book a couple times since I've been reading it. (At least with crossovers with Suicide Squad).

Even though I understand many folks' concern with DC comics I have to admit I have been drawn to them as of late. Over the past couple years I've enjoyed a lot of Morrison's Batman books, some of Tony Daniels, generally Paul Dini. I also have checked out the Batfamily books and Supergirl. Secret Six has been all right, and THUNDER Agents has been far more readable than Nick Spencer's Iron Man 2.0. The War of the Green Lanterns hasn't been bad either. And Flashpoint #1 at least was good.

DC has a long way to go regarding diversity (but so does Marvel) and I don't like the way they are treating the Milestone characters. With this reboot, I guess Xombi is going to get canceled. Static got canceled before it even started again right? And they recently canceled Azrael. So here's hoping Mr. Terrific book does well (I've never been into him, but I'll give this book a chance).

in what way are dc comics darker than marvel? surely not in terms of skin colors.

Absolutely nothing. Gail said she was conceived as a racial stereotype (which is true) and because of that she doesn't need to be seen again (which is not true). She didn't get Nubia's appeal to Black readers even though we tried to explain it to her.

Interesting. Though it's debatable if you can redeem stereotypes (I think we a lot of work and care you can, if they are too egregious a stereotype), that doesn't mean that Ms. Simone can't create new black characters or use existing black characters more in her books.

Skin color isn't everything. The characters at DC at first glance appear to be bright, shiny and frankly corny caucasian monoliths. That's on the surface, but when you delve deeper and read the stories you find that that's not true. For instance Green Arrow's former sidekick Speedy was comic's first heroin addict. While the X-Men were using euphemisms to talk about race relations Green Arrow and Green Lantern confronted the issue head on. DC's villains are rapists, pedophiles, child killers and mass murderers, they're not some cosmic being trying to find an Infinity Gem to take over the universe. Before the Sentry ripped Ares in half Superboy Prime was literally knocking people's heads off and Wonder Woman was snapping necks. That's the appeal to me, DC's deceptive packaging. Compare the Skrulls in Secret Invasion to the gory, zombie bloodletting in Blackest Night and you'll see what I mean.
