TWITCHFILM:

BREAKING: Spike Lee In Talks To Direct OLDBOY Remake

by Todd Brown, July 5, 2011 11:35 PM

Twitch has learned that Spike Lee is currently in talks to direct the long-rumored Hollywood remake of Park Chan-Wook´s Oldboy.

Word of a US remake of the Park Chan-Wook revenge classic first surfaced in 2008 with word that both Steven Spielberg (in some capacity) and Will Smith were eyeing the project and now it appears to finally be moving ahead.

The film is set up at Mandate with Doug Davison and Roy Lee producing and Mark Protosevich (Thor, I Am Legend) writing the script.

Lee is a shocking but intriguing prospect to direct this material and a damn sight more interesting than most of the director´s whose names have been floated as possibilities over the years. As for Smith, there´s no word yet if he is still involved but the man did just refuse the lead role of Tarantino´s Django Unchained, which would suggest he´s got something else in the works.

who all has seen "Oldboy"?  This is the first I'm hearing of it.  What's it all about?  Why's it a hot property for a remake?

Oldboy is a Korean thriller/action movie.

It's about a man who is captured and held prisoner for years for no apparent reason. He doesnt know what he did to be detained or who is doing it to him or why.

Then they let him go with out explaination. Then it really gets messed up for the poor bastard.

The main character is a great tough guy role but that movie is pretty damn dark.

Im shocked Will wants that role.

It's...interesting. You really have to see for yourself. It's the second of a Trilogy. "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance", the third movie, was the best IMO.

BLEEDING COOL:

Do The Right Thing’s Mookie Is Back In Red Hook Summer, Shooting Begins Today
Submitted by Hannah Shaw-Williams on July 11, 2011 – 1:01 pm

Last time we reported on writer-director-actor Spike Lee he was in talks to direct the remake of Park Chan-Wook’s revenge thriller Oldboy, but it seems that he’s planning a return to his roots first.

Black Film reports that Lee’s next film Red Hook Summer will see him reprising the role of Mookie, the character that he played in his 1989 film Do The Right Thing.

For those who haven’t seen it, Do The Right Thing was about one extremely hot summer’s day in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood of Brooklyn, where Lee grew up. As it may well say on the back of the DVD box “racial tensions rise with the temperature as Mookie, a pizza delivery boy, clashes with his Italian-American boss, played by Danny Aiello, and his sons played by John Turturro and Richard Edson.”

I won’t spoil the climax of the film for you, but let’s just say that it doesn’t end well.

According to Black Film’s “close source,” Red Hook Summer is about an adult from Atlanta spending a summer in the Red Hook neighbourhood of Brooklyn. The only other hint we have is from Spike Lee’s twitter feed:

Wake Up. I been up since 430am. On the way to the set of THE NEW SPIKE LEE JOINT.Today is 1st Day of Shooting.Awwwwwwwwwwww Sheeeeeeeeeeeeet.

You heard it here. If you live in Red Hook and you’re a fan of Spike Lee then keep your eyes peeled – assuming they’re shooting on location then there’s a good chance you might spot Mookie back in action… though who knows if his delivery skills are as sharp twenty years on?
