BLACKJACK is trying to return but he needs your help
« on: June 28, 2011, 12:28:49 pm »
Alex Simmons, pioneer and bonafide inspiration (and freakishly gifted) is trying to bring his most incredible and most beloved creation back to the bookstores.

I'm talking about BLACKJACK, of course. If you don't know about Mr Simmons or his creation here's where you can learn:   http://www.blackjackadventures.com/

If you really want to see GOOD comics featuring BROWN SKINNED people who aren't sidekicks or comic relief, you have to support the efforts of creators that the "mainstream" won't let in. WE are the frigging mainstream anyway so let these people know it. Support BLACKJACK via kickstarter donation.

Do it! It's good for you and for the rest of us too.

1 dollar? You can spare ONE freaking dollar.

If you can't, you need to fold up and stop talking.

If anybody deserves our support on this one it's Mr. Simmons. Go.
Soon you will come to know. When the bullet hits the bone.

BLACKJACK has just over a month left to get funded and is only 7% of the way home.

Even if it's only a dollar, DONATE something. This isn't just a "black comic;" it's a well-written, beautifully drawn comic book that won't see daylight without our help.

It's a DOLLAR. Two pieces of candy. A newspaper. Less than the price of new shoelaces.

Step up, damn it. Seriously.

If you are unfamiliar with Mr. Simmons indie work maybe you've read the Orpheus mini written by him. Great stuff.

Not only is Mr. Simmons a great talent, he is really cool people too (Ive met him a couple of times).

I gotta say I'm a little disappointed in HEF on this.

This is a black creator of exceptional talent and a long track record. People here are still talking about that bullsh*t DC revamp and how it "might be cool" but you won't drop ONE DOLLAR on a guy with the real skills to do this?

I know times are tough but, really, that's sad.

It's making me rethink who I want to make comics for.

I'm not kidding.

ONE freaking dollar.

Damn.

I kicked in a couple of bucks.

When you sign up and donate, you do get periodic progress reports/updates on the project.

You know what? I had meant to back this, but hadn't got around to it. This has spurred me to do so. Not much, admittedly, as money's tight, but you're right Geoff, we need to put our money where our collective mouths are.

Blackjack Returns Kickstarter supporters got this via email a few days before the campaign ended:

Quote
Project Update #7: Never Give Up ...

The above phrase is part of a funny slogan used in the sci-fi comedy, Galaxy Quest.  It's also something I've written on some of the Blackjack comics I've autographed over the years.  And it's a thought that runs through my head when I come up against some of the many challenges I've faced in life. Either way, there's power in those words.

My mother used to say, "They can beat us, but they can't make us quit..."  And that's true, too.  I've lost and I've won -- not sure which more often.  But I know -- had I not tried, not given it my best to the end, the memory would have haunted me the rest of my days.

As we draw close to the end of this Blackjack Returns Kickstarter fundraiser, I want to say THANKS A THOUSAND FOLD to those of you who have pitched in to help make this happen. If in 37 hours we receive that miracle, than you'll hear the celebration from here to Addis Ababa.

But if we don't meet the goal ... then I ... no, WE will find another way!  BLACKJACK will return this fall, if only in the comic strips (Blackjack: Heart of Evil) on the web site while we seek to raise enough to go to press with the anthology (Blackjack: Buried Secrets).

For now ... we have 37 hours.  PLEASE get out there and encourage friends, family, and financiers to pledge all they can. And keep an eye on the Blackjack Adventures Facebook page, and web site for more news.

Best always,
Alex Simmons
