Should all urban kids get free meals?

this federal pilot program, one of the start-up cities is Detroit.  I hope the program gets teeth.  Lots of children find their "only" meals during the day at school.  And yet, it has sparked quite a local controversy.  I hope, despite the pushback, the program gets to continue.

Are you arguing that people are choosing not to feed their children? If so, I'll need a pile of evidence.

Beyond hating poor people, America thinks they are morally deficient. That's why they're poor.

I am for free breakfasts and lunch at schools.

If you take for granted the concept that the more time kids spend at school the better, then providing free breakfasts is a good way to insure early (or on time) attendance.

It become one less meal poor parents are on the hook for and for the kids its a chance to get an early start on the day.

What I am trying to gain an understanding is that if free/reduced lunch is the "only" form of food for the day then we wouldn't have alot of dead children? At one point these same kids didnt go to school yet between the ages of 1 and 4 give or take. Wouldn't these toddlers possibly die based on the lack of proper nutrition?

Kids whose parent(s) can't afford to feed thier children aren't going to die from lack of sustenance  during the day while in school but they will  go hungry and starvation takes a toll on a kid's mental ability to focus and concentrate  during learning sessions.  Trust me, I know... from experience.

America, indeed, hates the poor.  There are penalties and roadblocks inflicted upon the poor for no other reason than that they're poor.  Call it Socialism or whatever -ism you wish, but no kid should ever go hungry in the "richest" country in the world.

I don't hate poor people but I strongly dislike those poor people who allow things to get so bad that they feel the need to kill  another person over a few dollars.  THAT I despise.

Well, alright, you're asking about a child between the ages 1-4 (pre-school) would possibly have health problems then the discussion becomes another issue not concerning HypeStyle's article about:

Just the other day, a new federally funded pilot program has been announced for this fall. All children in the Detroit Public Schools (DPS) system will be given free lunch. Up until now, reportedly 78% of children in DPS were eligible for free breakfast & lunch, but one challenge in that was the ongoing stigma among children associated with being ‘on the free lunch’, and many opt not to get it to 'save face'; also some parents are neglectful and do not fill out the paperwork for clearance.

I honestly don't know what kind of health problems would occur.
