THE SGT. WATERS AWARDS
« on: September 05, 2011, 01:43:13 PM »
Let's figure out catagories before we start handing out awards.

There's stuff that actually embarrasses us a people;

There's just plain bad stuff;

and there's white folks acting a fool in such a way that is usually attributed to black folks (ie JERSEY SHORE).

What else are we missing?

A type of Classism that some Black folk subscribe to. Is "bougie" the right term?

Any filmed entertainment that promotes stereotypes of black people both as real and positive.

THE HELP, DRIVING MISS DAISY, THE COLOR PURPLE etc.

As opposed to, say, FRIDAY or HOUSE PARTY or SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT.

Any performer whose performance in a film or TV series or music promotes stereotypes of black people.

HALLE BERRY in MONSTER'S BALL as opposed to HALLE BERRY in DIE ANOTHER DAY

The majority of modern rap acts vs the majority of past ones.

Time for some updates maybe...

A type of Classism that some Black folk subscribe to. Is "bougie" the right term?
I love the idea of an award for pretentious black product that middlebrows think of as "deep" or "profound", but is really just corny.  Good taste means a lot more than just putting down crass or low brow stuff.

i shy away from blaming black actors for taking work as there's still not a lot to choose from, especially for black actresses.

so the queen award would have to go to something REALLY egregious for me to sign off.

Writers and Producers are fair game.

What's the name of the award for the movie where well meaning 3 dimensional white people save 2 dimensional black people?
