THANKSGIVING OR CHRISTMAS?
« on: December 24, 2011, 03:15:02 PM »
Thanksgiving...no gifts, great food, secular. Great idea with dubious origins.

Christmas...gifts (and the obligations of), more decorations, religious, also a meal, but not a celebrated.

Christmas has great music that you hear A LOT.

Thanksgiving...no theme songs, but I've actually been assembling a thankful music mix...it's a cool exercise....

Thanksgiving, hands down.  Better times, more family for me.

If I try not to think about the 'dubious origins', I won't lose my appetite so  I'd choose Thanksgiving any day of the year over Christmas.

Christmas in America is so... misleading.

Christmas heathens although its pagan origins defile the whole premise. 8)

Thanksgiving - We have a hugeass meal. We spend the day talking. We have a great time.

Christmas - We have a hugeass meal. We spend the day talking. We have a great time.

My family hasn't exchanged Christmas gifts in over 10 years. (Mostly financial. We're all broke.) One thing my brothers and I (and occasionally my parents) do is go see a movie. This past Christmas Day, we saw "Sherlock Holmes 2." So, I guess my "Hard Choice" answer is Christmas.

One of my goals, however, is to make Thanksgiving to New Year's one big ass celebration every year.

How is "Sherlock Holmes 2" ?  I'm asking because I saw the first movie on DIRECT TV over the summer and thought  there were some interesting elements going on with some of the main characters and loved the set designs but like most big-budgeted, Hollywood movies, found it to be dizzying and 'over the top'. :-\   Certainly not sequel worthy...

Oh, and if you want to make Thanksgiving to New Year's on big ass celebration, I'd start planning and discussing that with family members NOW.

I polled my children on this. My son's (10) immediate answer was Christmas along with a are you crazy look. My daughter (13) after a moment of reflection chose Thanksgiving because of the greater focus on family and it being less commercialized than Christmas.

....I'm burnt out on the 'traditional' thanksgiving and christmas meals.. in my family it doesn't really venture beyond turkey, ham, dressing, mashed potatoes, greens, ambrosia salad, etc... some things I'm allergic to the way it's prepared, some I've just never been much into.. I wouldn't mind eating chinese, italian, mexican, caribbean, instead.. of course I'm not the cook in the family, so..  :-\

You will get no argument from me on that. I just feel fortunate to have been entrusted with the beginning of her voyage.
